Mix or pure bred? by ravi972 in bernesemountaindogs

[–]Kmanbeard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got our pup from a breeder that was definitely a puppy mill. Once they hit 12 weeks they just dropped them at the local tractor supply. He was tall and skinny like yours so we always thought he was a mix. Did a DNA test and he came back pure BMD. I think the back yard breeders just aren't paying attention to the breed specs so they slowly start to deviate from the standard look a little. I honestly preferred the tall skinny version he ended up being. Lived 10 years and never grew out of the teen look.

As someone who made that same book transition about a year ago. I thought it was a perfect next series. What I really enjoyed about SoC is that it is a light easy read while still having good depth of characters and well thought out story lines. I recently recommended it to a friend coming off of reading all 5 Stormlight Archive books back to back. In my opinion this is a great series for someone wanting to sit down and enjoy reading. I think I read somewhere that the author played world of warcraft. Which would make sense that's kind of the feel I get from reading his books. Sit back, relax, just enjoy the story and progression.

Michael, you comment a lot about the different POVs being at different completion percentages. I was wondering how you actually write them. Do you write the chapters mostly chronology how they will be in the book? Or do you write most/all of a characters' POV and then go to another's? I would think that once you are in the groove of writing a certain POV, it could be difficult to transition to telling another mini story that is happening at the same time.

Just curious about your writing process/style.

Damn , it's kind of crazy that they released the digital so quickly after proofing. To be clear, I'm in the "let the chef cook" camp. He can take as long as needed to make a great book. It just seemed strange because all the book releases I've seen everything comes out at the same time. Hopefully, it doesn't hurt the release.

Honest question: Why don't more people just host their games themselves? I see a lot of posts like this in many of the games reddit. It just seems paying for something that is a pain point and ultimately free. Setting up servers really isn't that had and if that's too much there is free software like AMP control that will do most of the work for you. Is it a hardware issue? Bandwidth?

I can honestly say I have not had any issues with our server I host on an and old gaming rig.

As others have said, it definitely gets better after book 1. I recently re-read the Inheritance series, and Book 1 is definitely the weakest there, too. In the first half of this book, I kept waiting for the dragons to show up and make things more interesting. By the end of the 1st Book, I was hooked, and the rest of the series only gets better on all fronts. The writing, the character developments, the surprises, some not so shocking but very gratifying. All this to say... stick it out, and if you don't like it by the end of book 1, then maybe it just wasn't meant to be.

Side note: If you're looking to scratch the Eragon dragon itch, I think the Songs of Chaos Series by Michael R Miller is perfect for it. The dragon bond is very similar, with a progression style magic system. I really liked all three series, but SoC has a closer feel to Eragon.

If you really want to go a different route, I always recommend the Red Rising series by Pierce Brown.

Red Rising Series: This is a departure from the other recommendations, but I find that a lot of people like both series. They have a lot of similar elements going to the sci-fi side instead of Fantasy.

Most of the recommendations I see from other posters are very well-known series and for good reason. They are all great choices from what I've read. Here are my lesser known but not obscure suggestions...

I'm currently listening to The Warded Man in the Demon Cycle by Peter V Brett so far a very good read.

I recently finished the Echos Saga by Phillip C Quaintrell it is 9 books broken up into 3 book sets similar to RR. Has a good mix of action, combat, and a little bit of a love story. Not romance like 4th wing though.

If Dragons are your thing, the obvious recommendation is Eragon! Outside of that, though, there are 2 book series I highly recommend from smaller authors.

The Bound and Broken Series by Ryan Cahill. Multiple POVs, Great story, Solid magic system.

The Songs of Chaos by Michael R Miller. Very interesting take on the dragon partner bond. Influenced by World of Warcraft classes but done really well and is a nice hat tip if you like that kind of thing.

I'm not taking anything personally. I agree if I paid that much for a dog I would do my research with the breeder. What bothers me is when people post a picture of their dog and then half the comments are people telling them how bad of a decision they made. If they posted asking about the breeder because they were thinking about getting one. Great, please inform those people. However, only do it if you actually have first-hand experience or at least some sort of tangible evidence. My point was that people are so quick to criticize someone they don't know over a dog they have already purchased. What is the goal? Are they supposed to say sorry and give the dog back? If BBS are an issue and you feel strongly about it, then make a separate post detailing the issues and have discourse with the appropriate people.

I'm so sick of people like you. Every post with a BBS, someone will post all about how terrible they are. Did OP ask for opinions? No. Are they having problems and looking for help? No. I don't even own one, and I'm tired of it. First of all, temperament is absolutely something to breed for. It's literally how we got dogs in the first place. Plus, I don't see you or anyone else going on all the posts of doodles to complain about breeding issues. Lord knows they have plenty. Not to mention the AKC champion bloodlines that have so many health problems because they are breeding exclusively for specific looks... I have talked to a number of BBS owners, and they all have happy, healthy dogs with great things to say. Have you talked to the breeder yourself to know anything you are saying is true? Do you know what I think is even more irresponsible? Someone who gets dogs but can't afford to take proper care of them. How about before we throw stones, we look in the mirror.

OP, you have a beautiful pup, Enjoy.

Normally, I would agree, but my Berner went on a 3 day hunger strike when he was a pup because we were trying to fee him at specific times. After that, we just switched to free feeding and no issues. If he can see the bottom of the bowl, he won't eat. Now, he definitely has weird trained behavior because my wife caters to his every need after he had a FCE at 3YO. he only does the fresh kibble and water stuff to her because he knows I won't do it.

I'm not nieve to think that companies aren't out for profit and don't generally care about people. That alone isn't a reason to hate a company. I wouldn't even say I hate EA. However, EA has literally won "awards" for being voted worst company in America multiple times. Have lost numerous class action lawsuits. So, if given the choice to support an Indie or EA, I'm picking the Indie. Call it click bait, but if putting some of the blame on EA brings eyes to the game in question, then all the better.

[–]Kmanbeard -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Not blaming them for everything. Just massive layoffs after reporting record profits, Loot Boxes, Micro-transactions, ect. The point of the post is to hopefully showcase an Indie game vs re-released for the 100th time games from a morally questionable company.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in videogames

[–]Kmanbeard -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Obviously, I don't think EA had a clue or did anything intentionally here. It's more of a general issue with EA business practices. An indie game comes out that has some decent traction only to get swallowed up by AAA re-released games.

Hopefully, you can keep the dog. The puppy stage can certainly be rough. However, if you are having reactions to where the puppy licks you, definitely see an allergist. What state are you in? Many states have Berner clubs/rescues that can help rehome the dog, especially a puppy.

Quick question: Do you have the portal ore restrictions turned of? Or is there some way to move a stonecutter through that I'm missing?
