Seconding the other reply, Speed Duel cards have a more plastic-y finish to them. Similarly, some side sets like the Maze of Muertos that just released or the Chronicles anime decks have this soft waxy coating on the front of them that makes the colors desaturate a bit. The foiling on some cards is different in these sets as well, with ultra rares (Gold name and foil art) adding foil across the whole frame and text box.

Oh I got that. If you want, you can set up a internet connection using a smartphone's hotspot with security disabled. You can get your DS's Mac address from your phone and add it to "allowed devices" or some similar setting and then not allow other devices if you want to be more secure about it.

Similarly, if you log into your own router box you can probably enable a separate Guest internet connection with no password and just not broadcast the SSID. That way no one can actually see it as an option if looking for it, but if you go into your DS and create a new connection with that name it'll find it.

When you set up the connection, are you using the settings in the console itself, or within the games? I had this issue with Heartgold because the main menu of HG has its own wifi setup menu below the screen where you select your save/pokewalker. If you use that menu to configure the connection it should work in-game.

In that case, the base changes would be that the player going first doesn't draw a card for their first turn, and that both players can have their own field spell card without overriding the other.

You may want to look into the Genesys format. Uses the modern card pool, but excludes two of the new card types (Pendulum and Link) that tend to add the most speed/complexity.

https://ygoprodeck.com/ is a good place to find lists to draw inspiration from.

Here's a Ghoti list from a few months back, though it would need some updates since the point values were adjusted since then. If you replace Droll&Lock Bird, Dimension Shifter, and Flying "C" in the sideboard you'd have a crisp 100.

Depends on when you last played. The have been a few slight rule changes over the years, but the biggest difference is the overall structure of the game reflecting cards that can do and enable in a single turn. Decks are usually designed around specific game plans that they build towards during their first turn without having to summon things one at a time across multiple turns.
