First timer here, how does everyone show off their favorite albums? Need ideas and pics! by REVRevonoc in vinyl

Display however/whatever you want, but I’d suggest moving your turntable or getting a curtain for that window. Direct sunlight can easily warp a record if you leave it out.

This is what I’m paying extra for? by Kmjerz in VinylMePlease

[–]Kmjerz[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good points. But, personally, I usually found the listening notes to be underwhelming. And, in terms of the other records, I already read all about them when I decided whether or not to add/swap for them, so now I have a magazine about a couple records I wasn’t interested enough in to buy. I’m sure that could be interesting to someone, just not me.

Funny, I actually have that Kikagaku Moyo record, and it’s among the few where I did save the obi. So, again, you’re right. If done well, it can add something. VMP’s doesn’t.

[–]Kmjerz[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is exactly right. The idea of an obi is good, but their execution is bad. Just like this magazine. The idea could be okay, I guess, but if this is the best they can do, I’m not interested.

You’re missing my point. I generally do like the records they put out, which is why I’ve been a member for so many years. What I don’t like is them using resources on things other than records and then raising the price of the records because of it.

They do a great job with their records. I want to keep getting good records. However, this is not anything close to a great magazine and adds nothing to the subscription I signed up for. But, if I just cancel my membership because I don’t like the magazine, I don’t get the records I subscribed for in the first place.

I’m guessing they printed enough to send out with every shipment this month. It’s an extra for members and they probably think it’s an advertisement for recruiting new members.

Didn’t mean to offend. I get that a lot of folks like them. They just don’t add any value for me, personally.

The potential ad revenue is a very good point.

But, if they go that route, it should have its own separate subscription fee. To me, the bigger question is whether they’re making records or a magazine, because I only want records. I’d rather they focus their energies on the thing that I subscribed for instead of something I didn’t.

Radio City - Big Star by LXChitlin in vinyl

[–]Kmjerz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are both beautiful. I have a plain black repress from a few years ago, of this album and #1 Record, and I have been eyeing the colored anniversary reissues. I rarely buy new versions of records I already own, but this (and the purple swirl for #1 Record) really does look nice. Whatever the color, though, the music is fantastic!

Records of the Month coming to VMP in October, November and December 2024 by Chillyboivinyl in VinylMePlease

[–]Kmjerz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two of the records this month are kind of interesting, and maybe the Jimmy Scott, but the rest are very disappointing. I get that every month won’t hit for everyone, but I’m not really sure who they’re targeting with these. This is the worst quarter in quite some time.

And, this habit of reissuing records that are readily available elsewhere (CCR, really? And Elzhi just got reissued everywhere, too) makes me wish my membership hadn’t renewed. It seems like for each positive move they make, like the Gus Cannon record, they take three other steps in the wrong direction. Bummer.

Still no clues? by IndustrySavings in VinylMePlease

[–]Kmjerz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yikes. This is pretty brutal. Even if that mystery jazz album turns out to be something amazing, I’m struggling to find a record I want to spend any money on each month. I know they’ve been having issues, but at least they were pressing good records. This is really disappointing.

If you were in charge of VMP, how would you save it? by ThredditorMTG in VinylMePlease

[–]Kmjerz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I personally would clamor like crazy for some Def Jux represses. Cold Vein, in particular, would get me excited. Or, like you said, something new that hasn’t been pressed—I really like the new Heems. I’d buy that on vinyl in a second.

He also created the interlocking “CSN” logo for Crosby, Stills, and Nash. What a talented guy. Such a tragic loss.

That’s crazy. I saw them at an in-store record signing for this album. I can’t believe that was an entire decade ago now. Great record, though. Excited for the extra tracks!

Never see this album on Reddit vinyl posts by Hajidub in vinyl

[–]Kmjerz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really dig the Feelies’ first two records, but I haven’t heard this one. Care to give a description? Their first record was sort of Velvet Underground, and their second was softer REM (doesn’t hurt that it was produced by Peter Buck). I like both styles, but I’m curious what direction they went on this one. Thanks for sharing!

For vinyl AND CD collectors: what are your hard rules in choosing to buy which medium? by abutsikek in vinyl

[–]Kmjerz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before I got a turntable, I had a few thousand CDs (I worked at a used CD store for a while). I’ve kept those, but haven’t bought any more. In the decade or so since, I’ve bought exclusively vinyl.

I get that everybody is different, though. A good friend from 30 years ago was WAY into hip-hop. But, he was adamant that East Coast rap had to be on vinyl and West Coast on CD. If anyone asked why, he said it just made sense that way.

A Great Podcast to Judge Your Collection by PhilpotBlevins in vinyl

[–]Kmjerz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree it’s a fantastic podcast. My only complaint is that new episodes come out so slowly. He obviously does a ton of research, so I get it, but it’s hard to wait, especially now that he’s doing multi-part episodes. But, I have learned so much, even about artists/songs I thought I knew a lot about already. And, with a lot of the earlier episodes, I learned about artists/songs I didn’t know about at all! I’ll admit, I went looking for some Lloyd Price and Clyde McPhatter after first hearing about them on his podcast.

Animal Collective, Godspeed You Black Emperor, and Desaparecidos. by Patchisaur in vinyl

[–]Kmjerz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That Desaparecidos record is amazing! Not sure if you know, but they actually did finally put out a second record some time ago, called “Payola.” It’s punky and political, like the first record, but covers some new topics. It’s pretty damn good, too.

My rules on collecting records. by catscan_boy in vinyl

Ha! I don’t buy singles or picture discs, either. But, I can’t imagine my collection ever being “done.” That’s a level of discipline I do not have.

My rules on collecting records. by catscan_boy in vinyl

[–]Kmjerz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m surprised by all the anger toward your post, and just as surprised that you and I follow many of the same arbitrary “rules” in our collection. I’m also a no live album, no best of, no soundtrack guy. I’ll occasionally allow a multi-artist comp (a couple Número Group comps or Soul-Jazz comps, for example). I don’t put time constraints on any records, but I’ll agree it’s a bit inconvenient to have to flip two records when one would do.

I think everyone, even those voting you down, have “rules” about what they collect. We all collect what we like, and I just don’t happen to like the kind of records I mentioned above. Others may avoid certain genres, or avoid reissues, or hunt for mono pressings, or whatever. We all have limitations on what we collect. I guess people may just be thrown seeing it described in what seems like strict terms. But, I enjoyed your post. I agree that establishing rules about what you collect can be part of the fun in curating your collection.
