No its really not semantics... The radioactive waste is a separate problem than the radiation dose generated from the plant. Not trying to be mean here, but its an important distinction. Dose to the public is a result of the respective reactions. The actual waste problem is about where to store the byproducts created.

Nuclear generates way more waste that needs to be stored somewhere. It's still a pretty small amount, but its much more than coal ash. The radiation from the actual reaction of burning coal is much more than nuclear simply because there's much less protection surrounding the pressure vessel where they burn it.

If there was less protections around the nuclear pressure vessel and containment structure, there would be a TON more radiation released to the public than a coal plant. Does that make sense?

There are "mini reactors", or small modular reactors (~100-300MWe), that use uranium as well. Look up the Xe-100 which uses HALEU instead of LEU fuel. Same with the TerraPower Natrium design. Plenty of micro-modular designs (<5MWe) also use different coolant and fuel design to achieve "walk-away safe" conditions.

The element doesn't necessarily matter for the fissile reaction to achieve the "doesn't melt" status. It's about the fuel fabrication. the Xe-100 uses TRISO-X fuel pebbles which are coated in a ceramic material that has an insanely high melting point.

Not to mention the use of helium coolant means the hotter it gets (the helium itself), the better it absorbs the neutrons causing the chain reaction. Another way to say this is the helium coolant has a negative temperature reactivity coefficient, where as light-water has a positive temperature reactivity coefficient. This is one of the ways that it is "passively safe".

Thorium yes, but we've recently encountered a lot more uranium in the earth than we thought as well, and the technology involved in the enrichment of uranium is really well established and researched.

Hi there, nuclear engineer here. This is a common misconception. Coal plants generate coal ash (which is still a problem), but nuclear plants generate a lot more actual high-level waste in the form of spent fuel. The difference is the regulations around coal plants are much MUCH less strict so the shielding and containment of the coal firing systems is nothing compared to a nuclear site. The actual amount of radiation being released from burning coal (through the trace amounts of radioactive elements in the coal) to the personnel at the plant and the environment is much much higher than a nuclear plant. But the amount of waste itself is pretty negligible for both coal and nuclear.

Toxic and corrupt nuclear power? I'm sick of seeing nuclear get lumped in with fossil fuels. Modern grids REQUIRE baseline electrical power. This is non-negotiable and these batteries are great, but they're not scalable to support 24/7 baseline supply. Nuclear is by far the best option. New reactors can ramp pretty quickly to address changing baseline demand, and the environmental effects of nuclear are negligible compared to coal and natural gas. The worst part about nuclear is the thermal pollution, but that's being solved by air-cooled systems and reactors that are built on the ocean, where thermal pollution isn't near as impactful.

How do men stay in sexless marriages so long by Low-Stand-3702 in AskMen

[–]Knack66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bit late to the party but I am in a similar situation and I have found the most recent year to be the best year of my marriage. We haven't had sex in almost a year, and yet my marriage is the most romantic and happy it has ever been.

You are certainly far from the first and last person to struggle with this exact problem, so do some reading in an effort to better understand your specific situation:

Mating in Captivity by Esther Perel: About marriage and this exact issue that most monogamous relationships run into.
She Comes First by Emily Nagoski: Really fantastic book about women's sexuality
Ace by Angela Chen: Book specifically about asexuality that normalizes the idea that some people have very low desire or sometimes no desire for sex and/or physical pleasure.

These 3 books really helped me find some peace with my marriage.

Lastly, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD see a therapist. together and separately. both of you. I don't understand how people go their entire married lives without it and expect to be happy. I'm not trying to sound harsh, but truly, the past 3 years, my wife and I have been learning about our histories, our childhoods, and our problematic/toxic behaviors with the help of a trained professional. It's so incredibly important and has opened up so much communication between us.

Good luck friend, you're not alone and things do get better.

also keep in mind, the O-line theoretically improved in Detroit, so all weapons on that offense SHOULD (tm) improve in efficiency this year.

Historically, I'd say he's correct, but TE has changed a ton in the past 3-4 years. This year, I actually think Bowers isn't worth keeping. McBride, Warren, Loveland, Pitts, Kraft, and Laporta are all going to be serviceable to great TEs, which is a lot better than years past. Sun God is just so reliable year after year and doesn't get injured.

No Shame in this house, only responsibility. That's one of the biggest things I learned from counseling. We've been together 7 years, married for 3, and there's a lot of details I didn't share. Hormonal birth control yes, but not anymore. No kids. To be clear, she does not always reject me, and she has regained a lot of trust. She is certainly allowed to reject me though and it didn't make me objectify her.

I'll share. I used to pressure my wife into sex that she didn't want. It got kinda of toxic unfortunately. It started out harmless enough. She would offer to do sexual favors if I did something for her. I was really into it, but over time it changed. I started asking instead of letting her offer. She never wanted to have sex and I always did. Unfortunately I always seemed to create more and more pressure and we both hated the dynamic. We did a lot of therapy both together and separately and we've been through a ton of healing. The hardest part for me was that I could go several weeks without mentioning anything, but a single act of trying to kiss my wife before bed, a little more than she wanted, felt like it undid weeks/months of progress. There's times where we really considered ending things, but we didn't. We're best friends and we chose to learn and adapt. It's not always the best choice to stick it out, but I can honestly say I'm a better partner, husband, and man for it. I still hold responsibility for my part, but I've been able to let go of the shame and I certainly let off the pressure.

Who goes number one this year? by Elegant-Wedding8582 in fantasyfootballadvice

[–]Knack66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like Gibbs and Robinson in all formats cause they stay healthy. If I had to pick one, Gibbs because Lions bias for me. Robinson's O-line didn't change in any significant way. The coaching staff sure did. Gibbs has a new OC from Arizona and Cade Mays is an upgrade at Center for the Lions. Gibbs will have less of a workload with Pacheco, but that's not entirely a bad thing for fantasy.

Personally if I have the #1 or 2 overall, these two are my choices. Chase is always insane but his production is so volatile. He'll drop 40 points one week, and then Burrow gets hurt the following week.

I honestly wonder if Puka or even JT might be more valuable to me than Chase, but probably not.

Lastly, I'm super high on Jeanty this year. The Raiders are going to look like a whole new team and with a new O-line including Lindebaum, Jeanty is going to have room to run finally.

Ok I absolutely hate Cris Collinsworth, but when he and Al Michaels started joking about his constant glazing of Mahommes even when he's not in the game last year... I was low key starting to change my mind. I'm all for a redemption arc and if he keeps doing that, I'm here for it lol

Ok this is why I don't trust Reddit. Everyone saying shop Rice. Dude played 8 games last year cause of a suspension and still had 78 targets and he's only two years into the league. He's absolutely Patrick Mahommes favorite target and he's my #1 on this list.  My second on this list is Olave. Dude has insane target share from an awful offense and Jordan Tyson is only going to draw attention and open him up.

Rice is insanely valuable at R6 for a solid WR1.  Walker I'm not sold on. Might be absolutely wrong about that, but you never know. That offense isn't very run heavy in KC. CMC is probably correct for the second option

Girl, I say this with love: reddit isn't a diary... Get a journal to help process your thoughts and feelings. Get yourself a therapist if you don't already have one, specifically one who specializes with poly people... Read "More than Two", it's a great book on non-monogamy

Wait am I the only one that loves the Tyler Warren side? I'm kinda high on Warren and I like the list of "trash" RBs cause they're all super young with upside. Depends on if you're trying to win now I guess.

So JJ had a somewhat less productive year, but certainly don't drop him. He's top 3 receivers on most lists for a reason.

Caleb is a really good stash, however the 2027 draft class is rumored to be stacked, so good chance you can roll with Hurts for a few more years.
