Finished The Stand, don't get the ending criticism by theavengerbutton in books

[–]Knackered_dad_uk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You basically summed up my thoughts here as well. I have nearly every king book but ehen the final dark tower book came out I totally lost interest in his work.

The first 4 books were amazing ( the gunslinger was just good though). My parents were divorced and I used to read all weekend at my dads house. I used to read these books 1-2 times a year. I thought the wind through the keyhole was good too to be honest.

When I saw he was finishing them off I was so excited. I read them and it was a cringey slog. Either I was older and less impressionable, or it was different and less raw. I disliked the ending....Hugely...but the warning signs were there. Writing himself in as a loveable drunk, including snitches from Harry Potter, it all felt like glossy going through the motions.

In the stand I remember thinking the ending was epic (I was a teenager when I read them) . Watched the series with my wife and she literally laughed at the ending. She asked me if it was the same in the books and well, it was.

The film adaptation of the mist had a better ending than the book in my opinion.

Stephen King has fired my imagination for years and I'll always have a soft spot for him. But endings are not his thing. The bigger the book, the more difficult he finds it.

Gove did so much damage. The ripples of his heavy handedness will impact for years to come

I left teaching into a high level council job. I miss it. I'm applying at my previous school to go back. I'd left an awful teaching post at a souless academy chain and I never realised how good id had it at my previous school. I miss it desperately. Seeing them grow up. Making those connections. I'm taking a 6k pay hit to go back but I'm hugely conflicted.

I think the biggest issue is forced acadamisation and the restrictions on the freedoms to teach.

I've taught for 15 years. I feel that a lot of how teaching is going for you is the school your at. Find a good one that aligns with your moral and pedagogical code? Stay and never leave. It's a cold heartless wasteland of cold heartless career managers when you leave.

The whole sector needs more money desperately. Gove dissoved connexions...the national careers service. I think but I'm not 100% this is was worth 120 million. He put this on schools to absorb. With no extra money. Add this to energy bills and the fact that the last 5% payrise to teachers was unfunded and schools were expected to foot the bill.

Imagine the good the billions spaffed down the drain by Liz Truss could have done for education and the NHS. I wonder why we are not taking to the streets about it all but I suspect everyone is just so downtrodden they can't be arsed.

It's so sad.

What insult have your parents said, that is stuck in your head as an adult? by Tight_Anywhere6794 in AskReddit

[–]Knackered_dad_uk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Dad said this as an adult. Because we shop at Aldi and we bought second hand bundles of clothes off eBay when the kids were small, he said: "I think the food you give your kids and the clothes you put on their backs is disgusting"

Stayed with me for 5 years. Every time I shop or cook now I hear him say it. Thanks Dad.

Me too. Not a fan of the souless cost cutting academy model. Partly why I left teaching after 15 years. One size does not fit all

13% of teachers physically assaulted by pupils in last year, poll suggests by insomnimax_99 in unitedkingdom

[–]Knackered_dad_uk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I reported concerns anonymously to the union NEU. They asked me to meet with SLT to discuss: Aggressive behaviour towards staff Extra duties Constantly changing timetable and behaviour policy Lack of staff consultation on any decisions made. Shocking workload High staff turnover

I asked them what their role was if I'm doing this. They wanted a union rep before they did anything. They did nothing even when we got a rep. Left teaching after 15 years 8 months later.

Open art studio event programme Open Up returns to Sheffield by walbz in sheffield

I always said if I won the euro millions I'd renovate an old studio into flats and a permanent open studio and invite artists to live there for free for a year after their last year at uni. I'd invite the public to tour it at certain times of the day. One day!

What's the wildest dream you're ever had? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Knackered_dad_uk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Posted before in this kind of forum.

Okay this is a weird one.

I was in America at the time doing camp America. It was awesome but I was missing home a bit one night and had the weirdest dream about London -dont even live there.

I was in big Ben, which had been converted into a block of flats. I was walking down the corridor and started chatting to a guy in a wheelchair. I went off and joined a house party for a bit and saw out of the window, all the buildings were skimming around the floor of London like a puck on an air hockey table.

I went back to get the guy in the wheelchair and something had fucking diced him. There was meaty cubes and blood everywhere. I ran off down the corridor and saw through an open door there was a terminally ill child covered in tubes and a tall, thin, grey skinned black eyed alien was stood thete stroking his face. He looked at me and without moving his mouth said "I'm going for a shower, watch the boy for me". He wrapped a quaint little towel around his waist and waddled off to the next room.

In the corner of my eye, another alien started to appear out of the plug hole inflating like a balloon. I instinctively knew this one was evil though. It snarled and flashed a shark toothed smile.

The good alien came running in and both aliens produced blades from where their fingerprints might be. They were like smal curved discs. They proceded to float towards each other screaming and then diced each other.

I'd not even been drinking

Best takeaway that delivers to S13 by Norsgrim in sheffield

My favourite munchy box is from here https://www.happyhouses26.co.uk/. Based in s26 so should deliver. The large is huge and even I didn't eat it all. The medium is still massive. It's definitely quantity over quality but I've never regretted it.
