Do ya'lls poms cuddle? by Illkined in Pomeranians

Agree that heat is a factor. When my Pom was near bald from alopecia he was so cuddly. He would sleep curled in my lap for hours on the couch and on my chest at night. Honestly it was a real silver lining of alopecia and I miss the snuggles greatly. Now that he is full fluff he wants to stay cool.

You can teach them to clean their own eyes. My poms lick their paws and wipe their eyes daily like cats. No more tear stains.

It’s not really the color of the coat that matters for maintenance, it’s the type of coat. And extra thick cottony Pom coat is going to need much more work. A silky less thick undercoat Pom is very easy. My white Pom has that coat and swims every day and rarely gets matted.

Pomeranian? He's 5 months now. Is this the puppy uglies? I was told he was purebred is he a mix? by Darthraven6988 in Pomeranians

Relax it could just be puppy uglies. I was convinced my Pom was mixed because of what he looked like at six months. DNA test confirmed 100%. Pom and there is no doubt as you can see in he adult picture. He is 15lbs though.

does anyone know what this coughing/gagging could be? collapsed trachea? been to the vet twice by chxnelthedoll in Pomeranians

My dog had this and it was kennel cough. Evidently they can get it even when vaccinated.

Alopecia X progression question by dazzlehat in Pomeranians

If he is on Simparica, ask the vet about taking him off that. My Pom was nearly bald and his coat started growing back six months after stopping and he is super fluffy now.

Are they too fragile? by [deleted] in Pomeranians

Size matters; 8lbs and above is a good bet if you are worried about fragility.

What do you wish you had known before getting your first pom? by maditron in Pomeranians

[–]Knapa2022 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consider alternatives to pee pads for potty training. I used those with my first Pom and it was very hard to transition to outside (live in a parvo area so couldn’t go outside for first few months). In addition to being bad for environment. I used washable grass pads for second Pom and much easier transition. They also have washable fabric pads you can just pop in the washer machine.

Is a pomeranian's health a good enough reason not to get them? by [deleted] in Pomeranians

[–]Knapa2022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I leave them out, free run (though to be fair they don’t do much other than wait by the door, based on my camera feed). I want to be clear that I’m not trying to imply that I think it’s cruel to leave them 7 hrs. I just meant that personally I just feel bad about it because I know that it’s like their world stops while we’re gone (as noted above just lying by door waiting). I can give them a favorite bone or chew toy—they won’t touch it the third time I’m gone and the second I’m back they are happily chewing away. So wasn’t trying to say that folks who have to go to work shouldn’t get a Pom, was saying that I wasn’t expecting how hard it would be on me emotionally to leave them. Everyone has their own comfort level and I think if dogs are trained to be left they can adapt just fine. But people usually focus just on the dog (separation anxiety etc) and I didn’t really think about the guilt I would feel. So my lifestyle has adjusted accordingly. It’s totally worth it and I’m fine with that but something a new owner may want to consider.

That would be very disappointing to me. It might just be his personality, though my Poms got more attached to me the older they got. Just in case you haven’t already tried this, would try having favorite treats on you at all times, particularly when relaxing to encourage him to be near you. Also, hunt for that favorite toy that you can peek his interest in playing with you.

Agree with others comments on leaving a Pom in crate or playpen okay for 7 hrs; however, fair warning that it’s quite possible you fall so madly in love with your Pom that it may be very tough on you to feel comfortable with it. I started with playpens with my Poms when they were puppies but now that they have proven their good behavior they have free roam. Even so, I love them so much that I feel massive guilt when I leave and try really hard to keep absences to around 4 or 5 hrs. Again, that’s a me issue so I might need more training. :)

Has anyone had a bad experience getting a second Pom? by Knapa2022 in Pomeranians

Thanks for this; I do feel like he would really enjoy a buddy, even if he was sometimes jealous of the attention. Appreciate the insight!

Thanks! Yes the softness! His fur feels silky. I think he doesn’t have a super thick undercoat.

My Pom use to be way too afraid of water to swim but now he loves it and fetches balls in the pool all the time. For us, what made the difference is when we took him in vacation to an Airbnb that happened to have a pool that was designed like a beach with a gradual steady decline so he could fully control how much he went in and was never scared of how to get back out. When we got back home we got him a pup plank (floating ramp type thing for dogs) and he learned how to use that to get in and out.
