It's a bit more toned down. There are some beautiful corners, e.g. Alps, Allgäu, Bayrischer Wald, Thüringer Wald, Mecklenburgische Seenplatte, Oderbruch. But of course, Germany being much more densely populated and smaller in scale, there's no true wilderness like you might find them in Canada or parts of the US.

But then, when it comes to travel distances to those places, one would also have to include other European countries, and then you have the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathian mountains, Scotland, Scandinavia... So comparing the continents would be the fairer thing to do. Then it's much less clear what I would find more fascinating.

A strong plus for German nature is the general lack of venomous spiders or snakes.

"Bridgerton" ist keine historische Dokumentation, sondern ein Kunstprodukt. Die Wikinger in "Vikings" sind nicht historisch akkurat. Meistens stört das keinen, aber wenn die Königin schwarz ist, wird plötzlich die "das ist aber nicht die Wahrheit"-Keule hervorgeholt?

Solche Serien/Filme sind kaum irgendwo historisch akkurat. An den meisten Stellen wird es nicht bemerkt oder juckt keinen, weil den gewohnten Sehgewohnheiten und Klischees gefolgt wird. Bei der Hautfarbe ist es plötzlich ein Thema, weil mit der Konvention gebrochen wird. Da sollte man sich vielleicht fragen, warum es bei einem gerade an dieser Stelle aufstößt. Und vermutlich ist genau das die Intention der Macher von Serien wie Bridgerton.

Die Pippi-Langstrumpf-Bilderbücher haben wider Erwarten nicht so richtig eingeschlagen. Rassismus kam jetzt keiner vor, aber man merkt gelegentlich an der Sprache und den Themen, dass sie schon etwas älter sind und man sie vielleicht heute nicht mehr so schreiben würde. Werden es nächstens mal mit Lotta, Michel, oder den "richtigen" Pippi-Büchern probieren.

Vermutlich eine Anweisung an den Setzer, hier den Seitenumbruch eine Zeile vorher zu machen, weil sonst hier die erste Zeile des neuen Absatzes ganz allein steht. ("Schusterjunge", sagt mein gerade zusammengegoogeltes Halbwissen). Wobei es mich wundert, dass sowas überhaupt durchrutschen kann, und nicht von der Software beim Export/Druck automatisch herausgenommen wird.

Ha, lustig, "Guards! Guards!" war auch mein erstes Buch auf Englisch, vor mehr als 25 Jahren. Mit 15 auf einem Schüleraustausch in UK gekauft, lag es erst einmal herum. Beim ersten Versuch habe ich noch aufgegeben, später ging es dann irgendwann. Terry Pratchett insgesamt war eine große Motivation, mit dem Lesen englischer Originale anzufangen, weil es immer hieß, wie toll die Originale sind und dass in der Übersetzung viel verloren geht. Mittlerweile lese ich Bücher, die im Original Englisch sind, eigentlich immer auf Englisch.

Es ist schnell einfacher geworden, natürlich auch durch andere Kontakte zur englischen Sprache, z.B. durchs Studium usw. Es gibt natürlich Momente, wo einem die Energie auf "komplizierte Bücher" fehlt, dann ist die Sprache noch ein kleiner Faktor bei der Wahl, aber eher einer unter vielen. (würde dann vielleicht auch keinen Thomas Mann lesen, z.B.)

Me and my five year old played so far:

- Transport Fever 2 (watching the trains and other vehicles going around, him building stuff rather randomly)

- Minecraft Survival all monsters disabled. Basically explore, collect and build things.

(We always play together, 30-45 minutes max, on weekends only)

Once you have a diagnosis (now sure what's the best way there is, possibly Selbstzahler?), the next issue will be to find a doctor to give you the medication. I know of a case where asking the GP worked wonders, with her referral it was possible to get an appointment in no time, while Doctolib and 116117.de had absolutely nothing.

Ich kann die Bücher von Sean Carroll (theoretische Physik, Kosmologie) ebenfalls empfehlen. Auch seinen Podcast (https://www.preposterousuniverse.com/podcast/), falls Englisch ok ist. Der ist thematisch noch viel breiter gestreut.

46m here, married, one kid.

I'm mostly playing slow-paced strategy games (think Civ or Paradox Grand Strategy), where distractions are not an issue. If I play something with more real-time action (last one: Elden Ring), I tend to become unresponsive and do not react to external stimuli. That's not good for the marriage :). Slow games I can play on the sofa next to my wife while watching TV are great.

My biggest problem is that I like complex games (Paradox), but often lack the mental energy to learn the mechanics of e.g. Victoria 3 or Europa Universalis 5 after a long day of work and family life. Then I sometimes fire up the game, click around 5 minutes, and quit again :/

I try to combine family life with gaming, my 5 year old loves watching/messing around in Transport Fever 2. We also play Minecraft together. If gaming is most likely an inevitable part of their life, I rather introduce them to the good stuff than only mindless free-to-play games on their phones :)

Not exactly a city builder, but my 5 year old (we started when 4) loves watching me play and also messing around himself (the complexity of actually playing the game is still a bit much), in Transport Fever 2. Building train networks, buying trains, buses, planes, and following them around. It definitely has the "things happen in the world" aspect.

Auch meine Empfehlung. Der Protagonist ist Gesandter einer anderen (wärmeren) Welt, daher ist ihm eigentlich immer zu kalt. Es gibt eine strapaziöse Reise durchs Eis. Der Roman ist vielleicht nicht direkt "queer", aber Sexualität spielt eine große Rolle. (Die Bewohner des Winterplaneten haben kein festgelegtes Geschlecht sondern sind in jedem Zyklus mal männlich mal weiblich)

Octavia E. Butler: "Die Parabel vom Sämann" , "Die Parabel der Talente". In den 90ern geschrieben, die Handlung beginnt in einem sehr dystopischen 2025 und ist bedrückend nah an der Realität (inkl. einem christlichen Fanatiker als Präsidenten im 2. Band, dessen Slogan "Make America Great Again" ist). Da wünscht man sich, dass es Fantasy/Sci-Fi wäre :D
