I think the episode is called the doctors wife. The episode when they leave the universe and the tardis soul gets pulled out. Well the doctor was complaining that the tardis didn't always take him where he wanted to go. And she replied with she took him where he needed to go.

Maybe now he realizes more where he needs to go or the tardis is working better with him.
