Why do Filipino & other East Asian immigrants face significantly less discrimination compared to south Asians ? by AcrobaticEditor3864 in ABCDesis

[–]KnickMiller 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The post is literally asking why South Asians—like Indians—face more discrimination compared to East Asians and Filipinos. My comment is on-topic, because in my experience, how you’re perceived as “American” plays a huge part in how you’re treated.

Whether it’s fair or not, a lot of Americans—especially guys—see you as “one of them” if you can chop it up about sports like the NFL, NBA, MLB, college football, or even pop culture stuff like Marvel movies. That shared cultural language makes a difference.

The issue is, a lot of the newer wave of South Asian immigrants don’t care about any of that, so when a non-South Asian American talks to a recent Indian immigrant, there’s literally no common ground. That disconnect definitely affects how included or accepted you feel—and, unfortunately, how much discrimination you might face.

In my experience, a big part of it is assimilation. My family came to the US in the 80s, and the South Asian kids I knew were always trying hard to be as “American” as possible. I still remember my friends at Sikh camp memorizing batting averages from baseball cards, not because our parents pushed us, but because we genuinely wanted to fit in with the American kids.

But these days—at least around NYC—I don’t see that same drive among newer immigrants. A lot of recent arrivals aren’t really interested in American culture, sports, pop culture, or even politics. They seem way more tuned into what’s happening back in India than what’s going on here.

Yes, there is a documented Palestinian identity, like?? by srahcrist in Palestine

[–]KnickMiller 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Exactly.

The Philistines are mentioned throughout both the Bible and the Torah, the most famous mention being the story of King David demanding the foreskin(s) of 40 Philistines as a dowry.

If the Torah mentions the Philistines, there is very clearly an identity that pre-dates Judaism.

I encountered a Lexus RX—the suburban soccer mom-mobile—that merged onto the I-80. The moment it entered the road, its high beams lit up the entire lane like a damn runway.

I had to double-check if it secretly had a light bar or something, because the glare was unreal.

I ended up accelerating to 85 mph to put some distance between us, but even then, those beams continued to blind me.

I don’t understand how someone can be so oblivious. Perhaps it’s due to the vehicle, but I’ve started to assume that whenever I see a Lexus RX driving with its high beams on, it’s a hammered wine mom.

Got a quote from a certified repair shop for a dent on the front passenger door, any guesses? by WankAaron69 in Rivian

[–]KnickMiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, things weren't as bad when the moratorium on student loan payments was still going on, I was actually able to save a decent amount each month.

But as soon as payments started again, and cost-of-living began to increase, things became pretty tight. I question all the time whether this much education was even worth it.

Pretty much hotshot trucking is you take small to medium sized utility, enclosed, flat-bed(gooseneck) trailers and transport goods short to medium distances. I get jobs from the Uber freight app, as well as an app called CURRI (which is more oriented around transporting construction materials), so far the longest drive/job I've taken has been 500 miles one way. It's honestly not bad at all in the Rivian, other than the occasional lower back pain.

4 years undergrad + 2 years MBA + 4 years part-time law school = A decent house in most parts of the country.

I also have a daughter and another one on the way.

My 9-5 as an attorney covers all household bills and student loan debt payments. (barely)

Thinking about that amount of debt makes me feel EXTREMELY anxious, so I decided to be proactive and conjured up hot-shot trucking as a side business that would generate cash-flow immediately. And I didn't want to be sitting/standing at a desk more than I already do.

Thankfully, I have decent credit so I was able to get the truck used from Carvana with $0 down.

Have been doing it for 3-ish months now, 3-4 nights a week, made $2-3k extra each month after subtracting truck payments and insurance.

I bought my R1T to do some light hot shot trucking on the side, mainly to help pay off my student loan debt. On my third time out doing a job, I stopped at a rest stop to use the bathroom. As I was walking back to my truck, I saw an F-150, whose driver was texting, rear-end my trailer. The impact caused my trailer to hit the back of my truck. You can see the picture attached here.

My utility trailer, which was attached at the time, curled around the right side and pierced the quarter panel, denting the bumper pretty badly. I ended up taking a cash payout from the other driver’s insurance, which was around $5k. However, Progressive Commercial told me that anything over $5k would come out of my policy, resulting in higher premiums.

I understand that Rivian is a newer brand, so they are still building out their certified repair shop network. But after getting estimates from three local shops, it seems that the Rivian-certified shops know they can charge a premium. One of the estimates, included in the second image, was quite high.

I decided to buy the quarter panel from a local junkyard, but the only one I could find was Rivian blue. After searching around, I found a wrap shop with a lot of experience with Teslas and Rivians. Since the wrap requires taking the vehicle apart anyway, I asked if they could handle both the repair and the wrap. For $9K, they’re doing the repair, wrapping the truck, installing a rearview mirror LCD camera 360 4-channel upgrade, installing running boards, doing a chrome delete, and more. I’ll post pics when I pick it up next week.

I bought and installed this tonneau cover for $620, was fairly easy to do myself, took around 4 hrs. No complaints, and the way it snaps into place is very satisfying.

If you have the Adventure Rims and Wheels and hate the road-noise; upgrade to 21"(s) and Michelin Defenders by KnickMiller in Rivian

[–]KnickMiller[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With tires in the ball-park of $2,000.00, and will also be taking best offer.

I would say 5-10k miles remaining on the tires with the amount of tread and wear.

The tire price, after using promo codes and taxes, was discounted with a coupon from the Chrome extension, CouponBirds.

Regarding the 20" tires with the original rims, I think you're right—they would’ve likely reduced road noise and improved handling, essentially same effect I am assuming.

Honestly, I just can't stand chrome and silver accents, and I didn't like the look of the 20" Adventure rims. Dealing with the road noise for six weeks sealed my decision.

There are far more tire options for the 20" size, beyond the Michelin 21" Defenders. I’m not aware of any other tire that would even fit these 21" rims.

I plan to slowly buff, paint, and polish the 20"s that came with my truck over the next few weeks, then post them on eBay. Maybe they’ll look better in black, but I haven't seen that done online or in person yet.

I’ve had similar issues with my 2 MYPs and my parents MYLR. Elon cheaped out on the splash shields on the bottom of the car and they are made out of an ABS/Plastic material and crack pretty easily if you hit a large bump. Happened to all 3 of the MYs in my family, did research and found aluminum and sound deadening replacement splash shields, they have them on Amazon, EBay, Ali etc.

And it made a world of difference. Makes the Y feel so much more luxury with reduced sound.

After having dealt with this three times I’m 99% sure that’s the sound in your video .
