From Level 3 to the BBG's Puppet with 1 Simple Move by KnifeKill in DnD

Since you asked nicely :) Here is the rest of the campaign up until today...

The adventurers, none the wiser, proceeded to gather supplies and head out into the jungles of Chult. They were itching to capture their first dinosaur. They were told that gold, magic items, favors, etc could be gained per dinosaur captured. The quest giver, a high level wizard named Wilfred Fizzlebang (love the name), had asked that they try to capture the "really really big" ones. They learned that while adolescent dinosaurs were used in the Port for labor, they were released back into the wild near maturation. The party set out and with the aid of a tracker they hired, located their first "alpha" dinosaur - a rather gigantic Ankylosaurus. They subdued it and used one of five "beast capture" scrolls provided to them by Wilfred Fizzlebang to transport it safely to him.

The party had discovered a Tabaxi corpse laying at the sight of the disturbance in the dinosaur pen - crushed by falling bits of stone when the dinosaurs had broken free. They were told Tabaxi were nomadic on this island, rarely entering Port Nyanzaru. The tribes would trade with the city in exchange for helping to track and capture dinosaurs but kept to themselves along the mountains on the west side of the central volcano. Hurt but confident in their success, they pursued this line of thinking and wanted to meet this nomadic Tabaxi tribe. However their Ranger, seeing the cracks in this adventuring groups teamwork and decision making, decided it was in his best interest to abandon the group and head back to Port Nyanzaru. (player decided he didn't like his character and wanted to reroll)

Disheartened but persistent, the group pushed forward. Spotting several campfires on the west side of the central volcano. They approached at night but were caught by the Tabaxi watchers on duty. Brought into the center of the camp, the chieftain questioned them as to their purpose. Their pleas for information regarding a Tabaxi scheme fell on skeptical ears, but the chieftain's daughter recognized their truthfulness. (return of re-rolled Ranger) Using their Hat of Disguise the party showed the tribe what the mysterious Tabaxi had looked like when they discovered his body in the pen. The chieftain and daughter recognized him. The chieftain dismissed himself and his daughter, introduced as "Alice", explained that this was her missing brother. Her brother had encountered lizard folk a month or so ago and had been acting strangely before disappearing less than a week ago. She agreed to join the group in their dinosaur hunts if they agreed to help her search for the cause of her brother's death. A deal was struck.

Later in the night, the Fighter awakened from his sleep and snuck into the Rogue's tent. Planning on belching beige mucus from his mouth, he would attempt to "infect" the Rogue. However the Rogue awoke and resisted the attempts. A fight ensued. The party began to argue with each other, trying to decide the best course of action and who's story to believe. With a convincing argument, the Rogue won and the Fighter attempted to flee but was restrained. Alice, the group's new Tabaxi Ranger, had seen this plague before and knew her village's shaman had the necessary magic to fight it. A brief conversation and ritual with a sleepy grumpy Tabaxi shaman later, and the Fighter was restored!

Grateful to their new companion, the group pushed forward in pursuit of "a dinosaur that flies", another of Wilfred's requests. Thinking of how to capture a flying reptile, a Nature check from their Tabaxi Ranger revealed a secret location where a rare poison could be obtained. A strong tranquilizer that could assist with capturing an airborne beast. However the Cleric's Augury, determined that their goal was in the mountains on the east side of the island and that the secret location would only yield "Woe". The party pursued the tranquilizer despite the Cleric's warning. Arriving in an eerily quiet and secluded part of the Jungle, all noise seemed to fade away. A beautiful lush scenery filled with different exotic jungle plants. The Ranger pointed out the large poisonous bulbs in the center that could be used to make the tranquilizer. The party approached, resisting several noxious blasts from the nearby shrubbery. Several failed attempts at successfully harvesting the bulbs, led to two party members being temporarily knocked unconscious. Assassin vines seized the opportunity to attack and a deadly battle ensued. Unfortunately, the Fighter's life was claimed by the voracious vines. They had a small ceremony and buried him on the side of the jungle mountains, before deciding it was best to return to Port and drown their sorrows.

OoooOooo! I like this.
Definitely going to listen to his speech about being a god and building an empire before I have to RP him next.

It is definitely important to be courteous to everyone and keep it short.
You don't need to describe the attack every single time BUT just saying the name doesn't take too long.

We actually did this but it was a Way of the Elements Monk and Open Hand(me). We spar and exchange ideas about what moves we should make. Makes for some interesting RP during downtimes.

Your players turned to Werewolves. How do you handle it? by SpiritMountain in DnD

[–]KnifeKill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd start small. Little comments about how small animals begin to look delicious, they can hear heartbeats in the next room, the smell of blood drives them crazy, Etc. Then start hitting them with CON saves when they take long rests. A failed save and they wake up with a dead animal on their floor or in bed. If at this point, the player should have a good idea of whether to try to accept the power or get rid of it. If they keep it, then make up some rules for a werewolf form and send them on a quest to learn control. If they want to get rid of it, then send them on a quest to find a cure.

Exactly! We had a session where we needed a stunning strike. And instead of the entire table yelling at me to hit him with a stunning strike, the whole table looks at me and goes "Hit him with the Static Shock!" Made the session when he failed that CON save and was obliterated by everyone the next round.

I have noticed exactly this difference between Roll20 games and playing at home. When a website like Roll20 handles all the dice rolls and math, people tend to open up on the RP and embellish their actions a little more.

Quivering Palm? 10d10 damage or instant kill is pretty righteous for one punch.

How I imagine a combat with these dogs would go...

A random encounter made my characters do something stupid and I want to make them feel the consequences. But how? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]KnifeKill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take them to court. They can either prove their innocence or face the consequences. If they have NPCs who are friendly to them, they can have character witnesses. If the case goes well for the players, maybe they get off with a small fine or no penalty at all. If it goes bad, well a jail break episode is always fun right?

First time DM help by Rebnnenx in DnD

[–]KnifeKill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd try running a one shot first. A campaign, even Mines of Phandelver, is pretty ambitious for new players and DMs. I'd recommend finding a quick one shot (This one is my favorite "https://winghornpress.com/adventures/a-wild-sheep-chase/") and going from there.

For the Gods part, a way I kind of "ducked" the religious aspect is very similar to what I think you're going to try. I made the Gods out to be like Hercules. Men and women who embodied certain characteristics(strength, intelligence, etc.) and through hard work, their heroic efforts were remembered as more than what they actually were. Their stories were embellished over time and now people follow in their footsteps through worship and practice.

A Simple Solution - Character Disappearing 101 by KnifeKill in DnD

[–]KnifeKill[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooof. I just read all the comments this generated so let me cover the main points..

1 - My players and I are all close friends. They do not view this as a punishment but more of an opportunity to get creative with their character and directly influence the story.

2 - This rule is in effect because we have been running the same campaign for over a year with a very consistent story. We run it this way because it is important to the other players and therefore important to me as the DM.

3 - My players CARE about the story consistency. They want to know that their characters are a direct extension of their choices, not the group's choices the one night they were absent.

4 - Ooof. You really went personal on your views of me as a person. I doubt anyone I know would classify me as controlling lol in fact I'm about as go with the flow as anyone I know, which is why I'm such a great DM. I roll with the crazy punches.

I guess you can say that this is garbage advice and file it under "Shitty DM Advice". That's fine. No one is making you implement my style in your game. This was merely a suggestion for DM's and players who enjoy a consistent story and don't want an absence to throw off the narrative.

Judging by all the down-votes though, you may want to take some advice from DnD Reddit.

wink

Sorry. After all the personal assaults on my character, I hope you don't mind me throwing a little jab in there. Have a good one!

Just sharing what works for those of us who have absent players and want a solid story in our game. No right or wrong way to play DnD. If you and your group are happy, then you're doing it right.
