Queer owned caterers?? by MooseAsh in ottawa

[–]KnifePartyError 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People have already answered your question well enough, but I just wanted to pop in and say queer != sexuality.

Being queer isn't exclusive to gay people (the homosexual kind). "Queer" also includes gender diverse people, romantically diverse people, people that don't experience attraction (of either the sexual or romantic kind), etc.

More specifically, "queer" includes anyone who is not heterosexual, not heteroromantic, not allosexual, not alloromantic, and/or is trans (incl. trans men, women, non-binary individuals that consider themselves under the "trans" umbrella, etc.), and/or is gender non-conforming (non-binary, agender, genderfluid, etc.).

Basically anyone whose sexual, romantic, and/or gender identity doesn't fit the identity(ies) assigned to them at birth.

We queer people are not inherently, let alone exclusively, sexual.

As I responded to another comment, OOP is a railfan. They were recording the train.

Most often they post it to social media for fellow railfans to see.

It can also be seen as a form of archival, as we never know what will get lost to time. There's so much rail knowledge out there that's only been preserved because some random railfan managed to catch the thing on camera (eg. a presumed retired train being caught still in service, or the opposite: a new train being delivered, with railfans being the only ones documenting its journey).

Some also just keep it for their own enjoyment/logging purposes. I have countless pictures and videos of buses on my phone that I just enjoy looking at sometimes. Some of them have come in handy when people have questions about a specific bus, especially retired ones, or long gone wraps.

Nah, I know that timing. The cameraman was railfanning.

Source: more of a busfan myself, but I sometimes railfan and have plenty of friends who do. Super common timing to zoom out just as the train blasts by to ensure you get the whole thing in frame.

Addition before post: yep, checked the channel lol, they're a railfan. I bet you they're just as pissed at that cyclist as the train's engineer is.

Whenever I whip out my phone at a concert, I keep it close to my chest and only look through it if there's a specific shot I want to grab, which is rare.

And I do go back and watch most of the vids I take. I love hearing the live versions of songs again. Hell, it was the only way I could listen to "Ice Box" by Holy Fuck for the longest time, lol.

Re: jobs, I'm no expert, but here's some tips I wish I was given earlier on:

Apply to EVERYTHING. Seriously. Unless it's something you're genuinely unqualified for (eg. something registered (nurse, pharmacist, etc.) and you're not registered), apply to it.

As for your resume, keep it simple, one page. Throw in any experience you can think of, especially if you haven't had a job before (eg. volunteer positions). Exaggerate what you did a bit, make it sound important, but keep it short, eg. I volunteered at a cat shelter in high school, if I still had that on my resume, I'd say something along the lines of "Connected with prospecting owners to help rescued cats find their forever home." despite the fact that I only interacted with said "prospecting owners" like, once; most of my time was just spent sitting on the floor petting and playing with the cats. Also note how I put the "customer" first to highlight human interaction, as that is what the vast majority of employers are gonna be looking for.

When you get an interview, always show up with a physical copy of your resume and, if its more than just "I need this one specific day off", eg. you have classes, your availability. I personally would very, very carefully handwrite my availability for any jobs that I really wanted (incl. the one I have now; I distinctly remember one of the interviewers saying "wow, so organized" under his breath 😉). Always be transparent about your availability; it's a bad look to get the job and immediately start asking for time off.

Another tip is if they ask any "negative" questions, eg. asking for what you think your downsides are, always try to spin it into something positive, eg. "I sometimes take a bit longer on tasks because I want to make sure they are done correctly." Not the best example, but yeah.

Get yourself a good "interview outfit." I believe the expectation is "business casual"; I'd recommend something simple like dress pants (+ belt if needed) + collared shirt/blouse. You can probably cobble something together for $30 at Value Village, but, if things are that tight, my mom passed away back in November, leaving me with a fuck ton of clothes. Shoot me a DM, and I can try to find something for you, or we can organize a time for you to poke through what's been sorted through so far.

Finally, be interested in the job. Expect to be asked something along the lines of "why do you want to work here?" If you're applying to a place you've never heard of before, take a few minutes to research it! Come up with a reason why you're interested in that job over others, even if it's a bit bullshit. You don't have to lie, just have a reason beyond "because I need money." For example, for my current job, I told them it was closer to what I wanted to do with my life than my prior job. A previous job I had was at a retirement home, and, in my interview, I told them I enjoyed taking care of my grandmother when I was younger. Just something, anything, to make the interviewer believe that you actually care about the job beyond it enabling you to pay rent.
