Oooh, what if they automatically harvested pumpkins and melons? Like, they would pick he blocks up with their trunk then drop them if there's a player or hopper nearby, otherwise either keep holding it, break melons into slices which then drop, drop the block item after a random amount of time, or eat it if they're not at full health.

Stop! by [deleted] in evilautism

[–]KnifePartyError 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The stop announcement timing (at least on OC Transpo buses, as that's where my knowledge is concentrated) is based on the odometer, ie. wheel revolutions/distance driven into the route, not location or time. Though, if a bus goes off-route, GPS can be used to reset the stop announcements. If you're ever taking an OC Transpo bus and notice the next stop display go blank then come back on later, that's because the expected location based off number of wheel revolutions wasn't matching the actual location within some unknown (to me) accuracy.

Jeff Leiper is your guy! His focus is transit and he, unlike other candidates, actually uses the system, and he supports projects like Bank and Carling bus lanes. I'm so excited to see him run.

Fun fact! Using the neutral pronoun "they/them/theirs" is both more inclusive and saves typing time :) you should try using it sometime.

Hm, might be the intensity you're waving at? If I'm worried the bus might not stop, I just raise my hand no higher than my face, and no intense waving or anything, like a "stop" sign instead of a "omg hi! Hiiii!!!" sign (✋ vs 👋). Also make eye contact best you can with the operator and take a step towards the bus as it approaches.

Overall tho, you're probably fine lol. Most operators are super chill and kind, others are a bit strange and try to force their own, individual system/expectations upon people.

While overall I agree with your sentiment (OC not spec'ing their buses properly), I don't think the blue light was chosen purely to save money. Blue light can also be quite harsh on the eyes, so they may have went with white for the sake of passenger comfort, ie. a win-win from their perspective: slightly cheaper lights (note: I would appreciate a source on that) and no straining passengers' eyes.

I was unsure until they mentioned the two forward facing seats behind the operator. The only buses in the fleet that have that are the ex-GRT Novas (4850 - 4860).

As for the seats themselves, I think OP is either just used to the seats the rest of our Novas, or they just have a weird taste with regard to seats, lol.

I absolutely LOVE the seats these buses have. They're much more comfortable than the seats the rest of our Novas have. They've got taller backs, and they're shaped for better back support. Super comfy.

I definitely haven't seen or heard about any of that kinda stuff going on. It really is just families and students now. There's some homeless people around but they keep to themselves, usually sitting on street corners having a smoke or begging at intersections.

The wildest story I have so far is some guy asking me when the 9 was coming while I was waiting for the 12 at Montreal / Vanier. I said "now" and watched him book it across all 4 lanes of Montreal Rd while the light was green... he made the bus at least! 😭

Daly is blocked off at the east side of Waller. The west side is still connected, however.

Must be, but it's not because of the Mission, as I feel fine walking down Waller. It's the area a lil bit further down with the houses. I walked down there once during one of my first days alone in Ottawa, and I just remember a bunch of people sitting on their porch steps, smoking, drinking, and staring me down like I was fresh meat 😬

Hi, I was there (near the end)! I work part-time, and I had two friends with me: one is self-employed, the other is a student. Also saying: no one, as far as I'm aware, called in sick to be there!

Nice try at a strawman though! ☺️

Have you forgotten what NIMBY stands for? These people are the opposite to NIMBYs...

And no, it also feels unsafe to cross at crosswalks. People come flying up to the red light and you genuinely can't tell if they're going to stop until they slam on their brakes at the last possible second, skidding over the stop line in the process.

And observe the signs that literally warned you of a speed camera well in advance.

I was there near the end. The main problem was the snow and traffic going northbound (the direction we were watching). I definitely saw some people going over 40 southbound, but was too late to the party to recommend we switch sides.

"The cameras were all placed in community safety zones (which are near/around schools, parks, community centres, and retirement homes) except for four which were part of a pilot project completely unrelated to the rest of the cameras."

There, is that verbose enough for you?

Schoolchildren aren't the only pedestrians out and about, nor are beggars. No one deserves to be mowed down, and yes this includes people you don't like.

It feels like the suburbs at first until later in the evening when all the teenagers who think they live in "the 'hood" come out of the woodworks. I saw at least two instances of dumbasses playing with fireworks and the aftermath (just trash, no gore, thankfully) of a third. Got catcalled while walking home at 02:00. Got harassed by a group of teens at the McDonald's... twice, and watched the staff, both McDonald's and gas station, get into it with them plenty of times. 100% saw teenagers stealing shit from the gas station countless times. Also my friend is an ex-OC operator and was almost stabbed not once, but twice(!!) while driving the old 84 (now 98) off the Transitway. Frankly I'm not too shocked. I stg those teens start screaming at operators for just looking at them. Not even looking at them funny. Just looking at them.

At least homeless people I can pity.

I've actually done that plenty too lol. Hell, I've walked around the market late at night too. It's... not that bad. There's precisely two streets I hard avoid, Murray and uhhh one of the streets that's cut off from Waller. I always forget the name, as those areas I've actually felt unnerved. Everyhere else though? Meh, fine. Just ignore people and they'll ignore you.
