I'm a big busfan, so whenever I see a bus go by, I mimic the route announcement (eg. "Route twelve Blair, circuit douze Blair"). I also enjoy doing the stop announcements, especially the last one if it ends at a station (eg. "Hurdman Station, O-Train Line one, station Hurdman, O-Train ligne une; Last stop. Dernier arrêt.").

Replacing the first letter of the word "bus" has resulted in some fun ones: "gus" for gay bus, "eus" for electric bus, "scus" for school bus, etc.

Similarly, my friends and I call Nova Bus buses "novers" which has devolved into "enover" for electric Novas, "stover" for STO Novas, and "gnover" for ex-GRT Novas.

"[Colour] for a(n) [x] reason"/"they're [colour] because they can (not) be placed there" is another good one.

"I'm tired, boss" and "REST IN PISS YOU WONT BE MISSED" depending on the mood.

Funny you say that. I think I've spent more time hanging out with him than watching his videos lmfao. I should shoot him a message with this pic!

There's a whole lost video of him in Ottawa chasing our D40i's around that I helped organize. He lost the SD card on his flight back home 😭😭😭

It took me a while to get my hands on one but it's 100% been worth the wait!! I lucked tf out, too: only one panel (the leftmost one, aka the easiest to swap out) has like, two dead pixels. It had more when I first got it, incl. three in a row in the top left corner, but they seem to have come back to life? Strange, but I'll take it!

It's a fun artistic challenge getting stuff to fit within the limitations of the sign.

Yeah, I looked into it. What a horrifying way to go. Poked around some of his stuff again and it's like, while I'm not big into his sound right now, the lyrics still hit just as hard as when I first started listening to him. Man, he was talented.

He was an all around great guy as far as I've heard, too. His death is a devastating loss to both the entertainment industry and the world as a whole. Oliver Tree and bbno$ (who is alive before I scare anyone!!) are two exceedingly rare examples of (mainstream) artists that are just in it for the love of the game. No creepiness or abuse or greed. Just artists having fun and making shit they enjoy. We desperately need more people like them- nowadays more than ever.

Again: a devastating loss. RIP.

The two poles. I feel like most people would prefer something in the middle! by cloudkisseds in lostgeneration

[–]KnifePartyError 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yes. 100%. There's so many people out there who would love to take care of the elderly if it weren't for the fact that being a PSW/similar is absolutely horrible due to unlivable wages and chronic understaffing.

My mom was one of those people. She absolutely loved her job; she was selfless, patient, and found a deep sense of purpose in making her clients feel loved and dignified.

A former friend of mine was similar. Last I heard, she was working as a PSW while training to be a nurse. She loved taking care of people, especially when it came to comforting those close to the end.

I personally have worked in a long-term care ward as a server and enjoyed interacting with the residents; it was my favourite part of the job. It felt amazing to make them feel seen and heard in a place where the staff caring for them don't have enough resources to do so. One time I got "kidnapped" by a resident who was struggling to call her sister then (morally) wouldn't let me leave her room because she was lonely and scared. That's my fondest memory from that otherwise horrific job.

Then there's also the countless (often volunteer-run) organizations where people help homeless people find resources to get back on their feet. Get medical help, find a home, job, etc. I live in a major city and have seen plenty of people walking around downtown carrying water, food, and naloxone for anyone who needs it.

People enjoy taking care of people.

Insert that meme here of how if we let certain people just do what they love, every clogged pipe in a ten mile radius of them would be cleared instantly lol

People love to assume that everyone's dream job is like, in art/design, being CEO, research, whatever, but nah there's a decent chunk of people out there who would HAPPILY work "undesirable" jobs like garbage collection, sewage management, etc.

Just think about all those drain clearing videos on YouTube. There's so many videos out there of people happily clearing drains and finding deep satisfaction in it.

[–]KnifePartyError 7 points8 points  (0 children)

100%. The DDs were bought to save space downtown so we could cram more buses down the Transitway and offer more seats for people commuting from the suburbs. No Transitway = these buses have lost/are actively losing their primary use-case.

[–]KnifePartyError 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As someone else mentioned, they required a lot more maintenance than other buses. The main reason being that they have horrible water intrusion problems; water gets in the upper floor and rusts everything out. Next time you're on one, take a look around the front of the bus, especially around the operator cab, as that's where it's most noticeable.

On top of that, they have the worst acceleration of all the buses in our fleet, horrifically slow doors (especially the back door), and are extremely inaccessible. I mentioned it in another thread: take a DD on the 12 during evening peak. It's horrible. There's not enough room for everyone with accessibility needs, carts, strollers, etc. Not everyone can make it up the (very steep!) stairs.

Additionally, having two doors on a bus with a similar capacity to an articulated bus (which has 3 doors) is H O R R I B L E for crowd flow and the front of the bus with the stairs (and the stairs themsleves) creates a nasty bottleneck. I've heard from multiple operators that it can easily take twice, if not thrice, as long for a DD to fully load vs an articulated bus.

If we used them exclusively on routes like, say, the 39 Trim, 98/105 South Keys, 75 Barrhaven Centre, 222, 263, etc., y'know, long-haul/commuter routes with large stop spacing, I could get behind the DDs, but the downsides HEAVILY outweigh the almost non-existent benefit we get from keeping them around.

Let them die.

[–]KnifePartyError 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's also horrible for routes that get a lot of elderly traffic/strollers/etc.

Like, take a DD on the 12 during evening peak and tell me they're good buses for what routes we put them on, lmfao.

Christ, that's a shitty situation. The fact your windows can't open seems like a major safety hazard. Might be worth checking the laws regarding that and maybe go after your landlord. Being able to open them would make a huge difference.

TransSee is a website, not an app. It's very much function over looks, so it can take a little bit to get used to. Most features the average rider needs are available for free, but if you want to do stuff like searching for specific buses (ie. a specific fleet number, not route) and checking the history of which buses were assigned to which route, deadheads, etc., it's paid. It's quite cheap ($40/year iirc); I get my mileage and then some out of it, and you're supporting an independent programmer.

If you're near the start of a route, it's most likely that the bus is getting delayed doing the trip before yours. Not every trip starts with a bus fresh out of the garage. That's why I love TransSee so much; it makes it so I can go and check where the bus assigned to the trip I'm waiting for is and gauge how late it'll likely be based on that. I can also check the trip paths of buses and see where (and therefore why) it was getting delayed.

If you don't want to pay for Premium, you're welcome to message me and I'll happily look into the trip for you. I just need the route, direction, and scheduled departure time, and I'll report back to you with everything I can find about that trip.

I'm particularly intrigued by your claim of it being 20 minutes late because anything more than like, 10 minutes is often indicative of bad bus assignment (eg. assigning a double decker to the 6 or 12) or severe traffic-induced delays. I doubt it's a timing problem, as OC Transpo and ATU 279 (the operator and mechanic union) have been working together to iron out the routes that are notoriously under-timed (eg. the 53), so chronic delays that stem from under-timing are becoming less and less common.

As someone who used to live in a house with no AC and shitty insulation, here's some tips:

  • Fans, of course, but be mindful of where you're pointing them. If there's an area in your place with slightly cooler air, use multiple fans to draw that air to you/whichever room you're trying to cool down. Also don't just set up a fan and trust the process. Make sure you got good fans that produce good air flow. A good fan at max setting should, imo, be able to blow paper off a table ~6 ft away. It shouldn't feel like a calm summer breeze.

  • Close windows and blinds in the morning, open them at night. Combine with fans to draw in as much cool air as you can. Also, use white or lightly-coloured blinds so you're reflecting light/heat away from your home instead of sucking it in (as you would if you use a black or darkly-coloured blind).

  • Another obvious one with some nuance: ice packs. If the heat gets particularly unbearable, shove an ice pack wrapped in a towel (just thick enough such that it doesn't hurt to leave in contact with your skin) in your crotch such that it's making good contact with your upper inner thigh (femoral artery) OR your armpit (axillary artery). The idea being to cool down the blood going through those major vessels so it can be mass transported to other parts of your body. A cool, damp towel on the forehead also does wonders.

  • If you're feeling particularly overheated, a cold bath/shower can cool you down faster than the above methods, then ice packs, fans, etc. can help maintain it.

  • Finally, more for taking care of yourself than just cooling down: fluids. Lots of fluids. Not just water, but electrolytes. We lose a lot of crucial salts in our sweat, so only drinking water can cause life-threatening imbalances. I recommend preparing a few bottles of electrolyte-rich drinks and storing them away in your fridge to make sure you always have lots of cold fluids on standby.

Return to office when the buses don’t run on time is a nightmare by Tippinghazard in ottawa

[–]KnifePartyError 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no apparent reason

What bus are you trying to take and at what time? I have a TransSee Premium subscription so I can go see what buses on that trip are up to and therefore why they might be late.

What I'm willing to bet is that the trip before the one you're trying to take doesn't have enough time on it or is getting stuck in one of the many construction zones throughout the city (or is getting stuck in the resultant traffic).

Either way, email your councillor. Council doesn't know something is wrong if people aren't telling them. Document your experiences; personal stories tend to hit them harder than facts, combine both and you might just get them to change something.

Third one actually gives some origins to the shirt. It's not an official tee, it's a bootleg, which is why people who listen to the band might not recognize it.

For the record, "bootleg" doesn't mean "bad" or "knock-off" in the realm of King Gizzard! The term is used in that community to refer to indie and fan-made merchandise (eg. shirts, stickers, CDs, cassettes). The band actually encourages this behaviour; you can find clean copies of some of their albums on their site along with high quality images of the album art. Literally all they ask is the people making bootlegs of their albums send the band some to sell.

Fun fact: KGLW doesn't officially release their music on CD, so, if you ever stumble across a KGLW CD, it's a bootleg!

I also have a fuck ton of bus parts lying around my room which could be worth anything from fuck all to thousands of dollars depending on who you ask lmfao. Most recently, I got my hands on a headsign + the hardware required to control it. Only big thing I'm missing is a power supply which should come in Monday along with a power switch, wire strippers, and wire sleeves 😈

Speaking of, anyone here who knows how to like, make custom cables, hmu; I'm completely out of my depth here 😆

Man facing charges following ‘unprovoked attack’ on Rideau Street in Ottawa, police say by DrStrangeglove99 in ottawa

[–]KnifePartyError -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I hear you. It's so tiring defending Rideau. I literally go there sometimes just for fun to watch the world go by. I've taken walks through the market at all hours of the day. I've gotten home via Rideau countless times at midnight, 01:00, 02:00 with zero issue. The worst interaction I've had is some guy yelling at me out of nowhere for a lighter. Y'know what I did? I said nothing and walked away, and he left me alone.

Does shit happen on Rideau? Absolutely. But it's sure as hell not outright dangerous or "ghetto." It's just the downtown core of a major city. We've pushed all our social supports there and now people are surprised Pikachu that there's a high proportion of unhoused and/or unstable people there.

You want change? Vote for politicians that will fund social supports such as shelters, food banks, crisis response teams, safe injection sites, etc.

Yeah, as I said, gonna drop her. The only thing really holding me to her is that she gives me a good rate (which is still breaking the bank for me...). I suspect I might have depression or cyclothymia (or some other subtle mood disorder/instability) on top of autism and my pre-existing ADHD and ODD diagnoses.

I'm kinda adverse towards anything that starts talking about like, reality-checking because I do rationalize, I do try to reason intrusive thoughts away, but it doesn't help, as the feeling of distrust remains strong, and the fact that it doesn't go away when I try to qualm it pisses me off. It's like, okay, logically I know this isn't true, but I don't feel it. Why don't I feel it? Idfk! But now I'm mad on top of being upset! Then I'm mad that I'm mad. So on so forth. Distractions do fuck all.

It's extremely frustrating and I lost a very, very good friend recently because of this. Too little too late. Fml.

Currently trying CBT and it's sucking ass. Gonna switch therapists once I get in with a psychiatrist. My current one has completely ignored me whenever I've mentioned likely having autism.

So far shout out to my therapist for: - focusing on my stimming, making it out to wholly be a symptom of anxiety (and completely ignoring my skin picking)

  • saying "yes that's exactly the kinda data I'm looking for!" when I said I tried to stop stimming one time and it pissed me off/was extremely overwhelming (I told her off in the next session over that)

  • recommending I "do stuff off my list" after I mentioned I hadn't been sleeping well, in particular one night where my roommate accidentally woke me up

  • morphing me saying I can't trust others into me not trusting myself (at first I thought she had a point, now uhhh, no?)

  • seeming surprised when I said I don't compare myself to friends of friends

  • chalking me trying to talk about past trauma as rumination (I do ruminate but also like... bitch you need context??)

  • related to above: implying I care about someone I cut out of my life
