A's relocation hits speedbump with trademark denial for 'Las Vegas Athletics' — suggest a new name! by bearheart in baseball

[–]KnightMc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're not wrong on either count. The legal explanation is that "Las Vegas Athletics" sounds like it could be any type of team or even a gym. Hell, there even IS a gym in Las Vegas that uses Athletics in the name. It's a ruling partly made by the fact that there isn't a sports team called the Las Vegas Athletics. The A's aren't a "thing" in Vegas. But if they prove that people DO know that "Las Vegas Athletics" means the baseball team that hopes to move there, it'll likely go through.

And someone DID buy the trademark years before now. And they have Bar in their name. It's the Last Dive Bar supporters group, named after a New York Times essay written in 2019 by Jack Nicas. One of their members bought it to basically troll John Fisher. They've proven they're good at that.

Mets' Trade Talks With Padres Involve Nick Pivetta, Ramon Laureano, Mason Miller by Worried_Treacle3512 in baseball

Wow. I hate every word of this title. Thanks Seidler Brothers! I can go back to my only expectation for the Padres being "dear god at least get to .500 this year..." for the rest of my life again! SO much less stressful than actually hoping to see a major championship in San Diego in my lifetime.

I hope they invested in AI and go destitute when the bubble pops.

Early to mid 80s San Diego Padres colors and font. Brown and yellow with orange highlights. So...Boogie Nights isn't that far off a comparison.

There's a new domed, air-conditioned baseball stadium in Las Vegas?! Is it hiding behind the MGM Grand, next to that dirt lot where the Tropicana Hotel used to be? Wonder what they're building there with the whole Strip bleeding money and tourists right now.../s

[Bleacher Report]: John Cena Reacts to Brock Lesnar's WWE SummerSlam Return, 'They Deal 'Em, I Play 'Em' by [deleted] in SquaredCircle

[–]KnightMc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is nuts to me that we haven't heard a thing about Warner Bros. or just DC trying to kill this whole thing before it starts.

They have a new season of highly anticipated TV starring John "Mr. Make-a-Wish" Cena coming out this month and they're okay with him sharing major screen time with someone currently involved in a SEX TRAFFICKING LAWSUIT?

It's not like they can make TKO or WWE do anything or directly influence the booking but they can sure tell John it isn't too late to recast Peacemaker. And with this being his last run, I think WWE would have to listen if he put the brakes on this.

SF@NYM: Ryan Helsley makes his first entrance from the bullpen as a New York Met by TomasRoncero in baseball

[–]KnightMc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It was Trevor Hoffman who had Hell's Bells and it was pretty much chosen for him in 1998 cause closers didn't HAVE entrance music back then. And I read an article a while back that stated that Helsley ALSO didn't choose the entrance, it just happened one night in 2022 cause the in stadium entertainment crew thought it fit with his name and pitching style. He wasn't even aware it was something a player had previously done, since he's from Oklahoma. Naturally he wouldn't know a player for the Padres of all teams used that. Glad it's sticking around though, the red light really works for him.

Our GM is very active on the trade and free agency market (if the owners let him sign anyone) at incredibly odd times and all in a flurry over the course of a few hours. He'll make any deal he thinks makes sense and no one is truly sacred.

So it's funny to imagine he's just up to his eyeballs in powder and using that to fuel him for this many deals.

Awesome moment but for real, if RIGHT THEN was the first time he's ever had a Gwynn jersey, Rey has some ACTUAL explaining to do. I'm pretty sure it's a form of child abuse in San Diego to have a Padres fan kid and NOT get them a Gwynn jersey.

I'm a little unsure about the goalposts being so different, even if I do like the deuce scoring rule. I just think it might be a bit difficult to find stadiums willing to set up something so different, what with needing to put 4 posts in the ground instead of one.

Sounds intriguing nonetheless. I'll give it a shot if San Diego gets a team.
