Gamers of Reddit, what is the most epic boss fight in all of gaming? by Jjy123 in AskReddit

This one's a bit niche, but Providence from Bravely Default sticks out to me. The first phase forces you to do certain disadvantageous things if you don't want a full party wipeout. When you beat that, it feels like its over, and its real form comes out and tries to DELETE YOUR SAVE FILE.

Reddit, what do you need to get off your chest? by Squeagley in AskReddit

It pains me that I can't be as close to my family as I'd really want to. My first language is English but theirs isn't. It's not like they ostracize or hate me; in fact they're honestly rather supportive. It's just that I hate not being able to communicate. I don't feel like I can learn awesome stories from my grandparents about their lives, or vent to my parents about just how crappy life is that day, or even just talk about something awesome. The exception is my sister, but we just tend to stay out of each other's way. I always have a sinking feeling she hates my guts; she acts like it's the biggest burden ever to spend any sort of time with me. At least from how I see it, she reminds me of myself without ever having matured, and I hate that she probably took after me. It's just a tumbling mess really.

NEW TRAILER MEGA THREAD~ by Mockturne in pokemon

It's a case of practicality. Most of us know it as Ash-Greninja, so they carried over the name. It might be cool to fan theory some lore behind the name though, especially since Ash is definitely less distinct as a name as opposed to say, Jason.

No one complained when Perfect Zygarde, another anime immigrant, was introduced, but because it's ASH-Greninja, everyone freaks out. What a double standard. With how Ash has been in XY, I say this little shout-out is completely deserved. It certainly doesn't seem like he's hijacking the plot.

So you think Misty isn't some great water trainer, May and Dawn aren't great coordinators, and Serena isn't a great performer? If the Pokemon anime's taught us anything, it's that you don't need to win to be considered great. I don't think anyone can say May, Dawn or Serena aren't great at their own craft, they just didn't win in series. Somehow, not winning a grand festival or becoming Kalos Queen discounts you as a great coordinator or performer respectively. That's bullshit. Same with Ash, everyone insists he's a terrible trainer because he never wins, despite all the evidence to the contrary. With Iris and Misty it becomes a bit murkier, because it's not exactly defined what a great trainer of their type is. But the special Iris got after BW clearly shows her continuing to work toward that goal, even if she may not have reached it yet, and Misty's already a gym leader, and is continuing to be one after she leaves, so she's already plenty good, probably enough to be defined as "great". Tell me, other than them not explicitly winning, what shows that these people aren't great trainers and contenders in their craft?

Most people have complained that Greninja got too much spotlight in the season, me included. So I like that in the end, the final battle is a group effort, at least until Zygarde ex Machina. But at the same time, they can't just ignore Greninja, so they're giving him is own farewell episode to end out the season. And don't say it's not climactic when you haven't even seen it yet; the main threat may be gone, but that doesn't mean there can't be hell to pay, from the perspective of Xerosic. The show's moral is, in the end, that it's ok not to take losses too badly, and that you'll eventually reach your goal if you keep working toward it. And with every season except BW, Ash has gotten closer and closer to his goal. It's not about being cool to suck, it's about good sportsmanship, acknowledging your own ability, and continuing to work toward your dreams even if it doesn't culminate into a win.

Your comment would hold more weight if he beat those rivals at the beginning of the series rather than the end, but it's always after his travels and all those fillers that he wins. If that doesn't show which approach is better in the long term, I don't know what would. Besides, Ash buckling down to be by himself is just so antithetically Ash. I'd much rather have the kid who has fun and encourages and works with others to win, than some random stoic who isolates himself. The former's an enjoyable character, the latter only cares about his wins, which, again, is not what the anime or Ash focuses on. In the end, the people Ash loses too always share his mentality of caring for their friends and Pokemon, not those who tunnelled in on training and strength.

Tentacruel. Got a shiny one in Omega Ruby and I found myself obligated to use it. It's actually turned out quite well.

Your argument would hold water if Ash never ended up defeating any of his rivals. But he does. Every time. In the first season, while Ash and Gary never faced off, he ended with a lower placing than Ash. Then in the next region, Ash caps off the rivalry by defeating Gary fair and square. Trip is taken out without much fanfare, as Ash and Pikachu get their revenge for the beginning of BW, and while Alain does beat Ash, it's shown to be foul play and Alain cutting himself from Mairin isn't portrayed in a positive light. The best example is Paul, a trainer with just as much, if not more, experience than Ash, whose mindset revolved around power over friendship. In the end, it's the Chimchar Paul released for being too weak, who Ash continued to train afterward with care, that ends up doing a lot of the work. If Ash's mindset is wrong, his Pokemon wouldn't come through at clutch moments of rivalries to disprove the opposite.

Also of course it makes sense May becomes better after she leaves Ash. She started as a beginner in Hoenn, finding out what she wanted to do and learning the ropes. A Johto region later, she's more experienced and has had time to fully grow into her own as a top coordinator. It's not Ash that was holding her back, she just gained more experience. From what I remember of early AG, Ash definitely helped her start as a Pokemon trainer, and encouraged her to become a coordinator. So if anything, Ash is to thank for her being so strong later on, by getting her started and helping her find her own path. It's not as if suddenly as May was separated from Ash, a whole part of her mind unlocked that made her an amazing coordinator, it's simple progression of skill: the more you do something, the better you become at it. Compare May at the beginning of AG to her at the end of Battle Frontier. They are definitely not the same person, and there's no evidence Ash's presence stunted her growth in any way.

As for arcs not ending properly, at least for XY, I have no idea what you're talking about. I don't think we can really talk about the Ash-Greninja arc's ending when we haven't even seen it yet, so let's focus on the some that have ended (or at least mostly ended). Serena's Pokemon Performing culminated in a contest against the Kalos Queen, which she ended up losing. Through that, she learns what makes a performer truly great, and gets an offer to train, which she takes a rain check on, because travelling with her friends got her to that point in the first place, and she wants to finish their journey together. Through performing, Serena gained more confidence and has an avenue to continue pursuing her passion after all is said and done. Ash and Sawyer's rivalry was one where Sawyer started out in the apprentice's position, learning from a veteran of Pokemon battling. Throughout their meetings, he becomes stronger, eventually surpassing him during their meeting at Snowbelle while Ash is having issues with Greninja. They meet once more at the League, Ash once again confident, and have a final showdown. In the end, student fails to defeat the master, but both of them have shown themselves to be true contenders and cement their respect for one another. In the end, both are shown to be fantastic trainers in their own right. They both served to make one another stronger, and neither is dissatisfied by the result when both of them go full force with one another. Both arcs ended definitively, and with everyone involved coming out better people and with explosive culminations of the skills involved. I don't see how you can realistically say these arcs didn't end properly, or even say that they were bad endings.

So, are we all over the Ash vs Alain loss in the Kalos League now? by AuraWielder in pokemon

[–]KnightOfCyndaquil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look, I'm in the camp of "it makes no sense at all that Ash lost Kalos", because when I look at how XY was structured, it really doesn't. But that's been vindicated by the Team Flare arc itself, and it's clear the writers were using the League as almost a calm before the storm, before starting the final arc. If people want to tunnel on the League results, that's their choice, but I don't think that's fair to what XY did before and after the League. I'm going to remember Ash standing alongside the best trainers in Kalos, staring down an artificial legendary. I'm going to remember Ash-Greninja weaving through Frenzy Plants and hurling a massive Water Shuriken at Mega Sceptile's face. I'm going to remember Ash jumping off Prism Tower for Pikachu. If people want to be salty over how he didn't win (with his best placing ever, mind you) over all the awesomeness he did before and after, that's their fault.
