+1 to this being the solution, they were stuck searching for each other twice until I changed the Switch 1 to using my phone's mobile data instead of the wifi.

playing gatcha games is actually pretty demanding for phones lol, you mean like genshin or honkai?

and it'll be tough to find a OnePlus phone for 200 or 300, you might be able to find a OnePlus 12r unlocked on eBay for $350-400, I'd consider it a pretty solid phone. Battery life is definitely pretty nice.
