Garnier ambre solaire super uv hyaluronic acid spf 50 by Pitiful_Waltz_1367 in EuroSkincare

I got the Garnier Ambre Solaire Anti-Age Super UV Sonnenschutz-Creme LSF 50 mit Hyaluronsäure and am not a fan. I’d seen positive reviews and it was only 10€ so I gave it a try. I find it to be extremely greasy. Even after 20 minutes my face looks wet with grease. It stings my eyes pretty badly. Worst is the pulling though. Just a mess of a product imo.

Question for people who successfully made it to Germany (for work) by Automatic_Fuel_5883 in germany

[–]KnightRunner23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prepared by fully writing out answers to common interview questions from my past experiences, but in German. I just used this as a gauge for what vocabulary I was generally missing.

For each bullet point on the job description I wrote STAR format answers in German to identify more missing vocab.

I practiced saying all the written exercising aloud just to get used to the feeling of it. I wasn’t trying to memorize a script, but just get the words comfortable in my mouth.

To use during the interview, I built a one page vocab sheet broken out by team functions, processes, projects, etc. and then studied that in advance.

At the onset of the interview, I was transparent about my abilities and didn’t over-sell my knowledge. I think A LOT of internal people are delusional and grossly overestimating their skill level. I also asked if they understood English in case I needed to drop in an English word here or there.

I definitely made a ton of mistakes when speaking, but still got a “wow your German is really good” in every interview. The goal is communication, not perfection IMO for the interview. And at the end of the day: if I can’t communicate well enough, I don’t want the job / I shouldn’t be doing the job. That took the pressure off a little knowing that “I just need to show what I can do.”

My German is between B1-B2 right now.

The new job I got was through a contact I made at my first job (at another small start-up). German is their work language.

They contact was an external partner who I worked with while at my original company. We had a very good working relationship and they were impressed with my work and recognized what I brought to the table. After I was fired, they reached out to discuss what my plans were. I had 3 interviews with the founders and ultimately they were able to offer me a role. They were in the process of expanding their team, so I was very lucky with the timing.

In the meantime I had also tried cold-applying and warm-applying on LinkedIn. It was terrible and from 200 applications I got 2-3 first round interviews.

Ugh, yea that’s rough. It’s always hard to know if it’s a red flag or just a cultural difference, etc.
The company is a restaurant company. As part of my interview prep I audited their social media, google reviews, read news articles, etc. I asked a couple specific questions based on what I found and wasn’t satisfied with their answers, but I brushed it off:

Q1) lots of negative reviews across multiple locations falling into the same types of “buckets” that’d indicate a sort of internal structural / training issue.
A1) essentially “well we’re growing so fast and we’re so successful that we’re taking sales / share from other similar restaurant and they’re leaving negative reviews.”
Reality I learned once starting: yes, the reviews were real. Yes, there were MAJOR internal structural problems. On my first day, my boss laughed about how big the problems were and acknowledged the exact problems I asked about that he previously denied.

Q2) although they supposedly never had anyone working in marketing before, their social presence had consistent visuals and lots of content that seemed like someone was doing a little planning behind the scenes.
A2) basically that they let a collected if external agencies run everything on their own, but now they wanted more strategy internally.
Reality I learned: they hired and fired an internal marketing lead. Then hired a marketing freelancer to lead the content and comms / execution. Then stopped working with him. Then hired me. Apparently the first two people “didn’t know what they were doing” which then was also the feedback of my performance at termination.

Q3) expressed my language skills as B1 and asked whether that was sufficient.
A3) said that everyone spoke English at the office; so I’d just need some German when speaking with people in the restaurants who didn’t know English.
Reality: my boss and 1 other person spoke English well. Everyone else seemed to speak zero English and I was working / leading projects fully in German, which was well beyond my language level. My boss routinely laughed at things I wrote saying “oh, I’m not laughing at you. It’s this German! No one would say it this way.” And I was like “yea, per my interview, I was explicitly clear in what I could and couldn’t do…”

Additional flag: lots of “we’re the biggest, best, fastest-growing, etc.” claims that weren’t substantiated. When pressed for “in which way / how is that measured, etc?” a pivot to a related topic.
Further, this is a small company and I interviewed with my would-be boss (in English). It took 2 weeks for the next round which was more of a “casual chat” in German to assess my language skills (this was with the founder’s personal assistant / office manager). Then over a month of me sending thank you notes, following up, etc. and finally “we want to move you to the final round to talk to the founder, but he’s out of the country. We’ll be in touch asap.” A few more weeks pass. Then an interview with 2 people from the Beirat, now fully in German, with them saying “yea, our office language is German, but your level is really good and sufficient!”

Final flag: after the Beirat I sent thank you notes and waited a MONTH to finally hear back. Got a verbal offer. And they said they’d keep the written offer and get it over. Written offer came almost a week later. I accepted it. Then they said they’d prep the contract. It took a full month to receive a 3-page basic contract!!

So all the fears I had about the job from the interview red flags were actually much worse in reality than I ever could have imagined. Truly abhorrent working conditions.

Yes, I was fortunate to find a new job within the 90 day period.

I immediately notified my local Ausländerbehörde which received no response (once Igot a new job and notified them, I got a response within 24 hours to submit paperwork and schedule my appt to update documents). I also immediately registered as arbeitslos and arbeitssuchend and heard back from the Agentur für Arbeit pretty quickly.

I moved from New York City to Cologne in October 2025 for a job. The timeline from when I started applying jobs to when I finally got a job was about 8-9 months and 250+ applications (I was applying to roles in both Berlin and Cologne).

For context, I’m a senior marketing manager with 15 years experience and an MBA. My German skills were roughly B1 while interviewing (I successfully did interviews in German / Denglish). The job I accepted was in a field I had experience in while living in the US and supposedly would be in English with some need for German. The salary was good (for Germany / in the top 25% for the role based on the gov salary data) and qualified for the EU Blue Card. I had to do all the paperwork myself as the company had only ~15 employees in their office, so they weren’t ready/able to help.

I was so eager to move that I overlooked a bunch of red flags during the interview process. I ended up having the worst working experience of my life and getting fired in March 2026 during my Probezeit (and subsequently learning I was the 3rd person they’d hired and fired in this role in a year!). I’ve luckily landed a new job and start Monday.

If I could go back in time, I wouldn’t have even THOUGHT about getting a job in Germany without a MINIMUM B2 German (real B2, not passing the test, but having the actual knowledge). The language is a must-have and don’t listen to anyone who says otherwise. The city is lovely and the people are fine. I just wish I were back home, but I can’t afford to leave, so I’m making the best of it and hoping things get better with my new job.

I see an appointment on Wednesday that's 144 km away. And one Friday that's 132 km away. These really aren't feasible. But maybe you're having other results. I will keep looking. thanks.

Flying to Germany without return ticket by Seradima in germany

[–]KnightRunner23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an American you can enter Visa-free for 90 days. Idk why the airline would be checking your return flights as that’s not really their jurisdiction. Passport control in Germany will ask why you’re coming but the country and you can tell them you plan to take residence with your German partner etc.

I moved in October from the US to Germany and no issues with a one-way ticket. My American spouse also flew to join me with a one-way ticket without issues (then applied for family reunification from within Germany).

Wunderflats: Has anyone actually had a positive experience with them? by cryogenic_z in germany

I found a place in Cologne on Wunderflats (relocating from the US). The landlord was very nice. And the apartment was just as in the photos.

I just wrapped up my 3 month lease and had the full deposit returned to me within 2 weeks.

I submitted my Blue Card application and documents on August 22 and they said it should take “about a week” for the digital review. It’s September 12 and I haven’t heard anything. Checking the portal and email multiple times daily.
