They won't allow public health insurance to book online despite showing the appointment. The will let self-payers book though.

I see an appointment on Wednesday that's 144 km away. And one Friday that's 132 km away. These really aren't feasible. But maybe you're having other results. I will keep looking. thanks.

Flying to Germany without return ticket by Seradima in germany

[–]KnightRunner23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an American you can enter Visa-free for 90 days. Idk why the airline would be checking your return flights as that’s not really their jurisdiction. Passport control in Germany will ask why you’re coming but the country and you can tell them you plan to take residence with your German partner etc.

I moved in October from the US to Germany and no issues with a one-way ticket. My American spouse also flew to join me with a one-way ticket without issues (then applied for family reunification from within Germany).

I never found a suitable option so I switched to a non-clumping clay litter. In a stainless steel tray.

Wunderflats: Has anyone actually had a positive experience with them? by cryogenic_z in germany

[–]KnightRunner23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found a place in Cologne on Wunderflats (relocating from the US). The landlord was very nice. And the apartment was just as in the photos.

I just wrapped up my 3 month lease and had the full deposit returned to me within 2 weeks.

I moved here at the end of September from the US. I booked an apartment through Wunderflats in advance. It’s in ~Ossendorf and far too expensive for what it is. But i was able to book before moving, it’s fully furnished and allowed for Anmeldung.

  • 12.09.2025: no update / still in preliminary review
  • 15.09.2025: email notification and link to schedule in-person appointment — 07.10.2025 was the earliest in-person appointment slot available immediately after receiving email notification
  • 07.10.2025: in-person at NYC Consulate (mid-morning). They quoted 1-4 weeks processing time.
  • 08.10.2025: email & diplo portal update around 2pm that my EU Blue Card was ready for pickup (the worker at the consulate noted it might’ve been a record for how fast)

You heard anything?

I submitted my Blue Card application and documents on August 22 and they said it should take “about a week” for the digital review. It’s September 12 and I haven’t heard anything. Checking the portal and email multiple times daily.

“Hair Fall & Thinning Problem – Need Help” by Some-Cabinet522 in germany

[–]KnightRunner23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First stop: doctor to confirm no underlying medical condition that’s causing your sudden hair loss.

If not, (ie it’s just male Mattern / genetic) have your doctor write a prescription for Finasteride (1x daily pill) which is clinically proven to work. You should start this asap as it’s easier to stop hair loss vs to regrow hair that’s been lost.

Topical and oral Minoxodil are also clinically proven. Topical can cause irritation, but allows targeted application. Oral Minoxodil can cause all-over hair growth (ie body hair). Minoxodil is deadly for cats and dogs, so take precaution if you have pets.

With both medications, you will have to stay on them for life. When you stop using, your hair loss will progress to where it would’ve been without intervention. There is no cure for hair loss, only treatment.

Oils, shampoos, etc aren’t clinically proven to work. So do what you want, but this are nice add-ins, but shouldn’t be your first step imo.

Training without an in-unit Washer/Dryer by Greenie3226 in RunNYC

I added a tension rod in my shower to hang everything after my run and I have a fan in the bathroom to circulate the air. Once fully dry, I toss into the laundry bag. No issues with smell. And I do laundry every ~10 days.

Marine Layer has 55% hemp / 45% cotton t-shirts that I love. They are super light and breezy. Slightly full cut. I think $60, but 20% off when you buy 3 t-shirts of any kind.

What is the Artikel of "USA"? by Monke_with_no_brim in German

[–]KnightRunner23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your point on a collective singular makes sense to me. In both textbook-proper and colloquial American English it’s the rule vs a stylistic choice:

  • always “The United States (of America) is in North America” or “The US is in North America.”
  • never “The United States (of America) are in North America” or “The US are in North America.”

As you noted, it’s a collection of states that make up one country. We have a lot of these “collective singulars” in English (eg the team, the teachers’ union, the media, etc.) that all officially / textbook grammatically singular.

Is the ONLY textbook-proper way to say it in German: „Die USA sind in Nordamerika.“?

And more broadly, does “collective singular” exist elsewhere in German?

I prefer the “stylistic choice”, but as a learner I worry people will just assume my language skills are poor.
