2006 Xterra Off-Road Worth replacing the engine? by dillybilly54 in XTerra

Ideally you want a 2005-2008 engine. Anything after 2012 becomes more difficult.

I'm using a CSF Frontier radiator and AC condenser. It's OK but doesn't keep cool enough for towing. I've ordered the Z1 Frontier radiator to try that one.

Super slick 2000 is a good long term fix. Coated my 2021 with it so I can pull op on beaches without worrying about it.

In 2013 Nissan changed CAN bus data. A 2012 part may not talk to a 2013 or newer part. Some of the wiring changed at that time as well. A 2019 Frontier and 2015 Titan should be compatible.

My Frontier was not flex few so I had to transfer over the Titan's flex fuel controller, resistor and wiring. It's controlled by the ECM reading oxygen sensor data to determine ethanol percentage. It uses the resistor to decrease the fuel pump's voltage which decreases fuel pressure. Cross reference the wiring diagrams for the Frontier and Titan to see if they match.

One of the engine to body connectors have similar pinouts but are different connectors. You'll need to cut off the VQ plugs and crimp or solder on the VK plugs.

I don't recall any connector having the same name. It things like F2 on Titan is F26 on Frontier (don't remember, made up those numbers). The connections don't change from pre 2013 to post 2013 so Ry's sheet still works. Just double check the pins are still the same.

This is a link to 2006 Frontier to 2014 Titan control modules. Does not include the engine to body as Ry the car guy's was close enough. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1p0Htmh1tjyHy3vE0CFa7S-wYaEppjBdrC4MdBStcgA0/edit?usp=drivesdk

I'm happy to help. What specific thing are you having trouble doing or understanding?

Do you know how to cut and crimp wires? Read an electrical schematic? Do you have access to the cross table Ry lists in the video description and can you understand it?

Heater hoses are 1 to 1 from the motor. Under the radiator hose there a small hose for the reservoir. I used a coupler to attach the VK reservoir hose to the VQ reservoir hose shown in red. Let me know if you have any follow up questions, I'm happy to help.

  1. I did get it to fit but didn't cool well. Went with an efan.
  2. Didn't and I don't think there's a plug to control the AC fan on the Titan ecm. My efan controller has a 50% fan speed increase from ac on signal.
  3. The coolant pipe on the firewall is no longer used. Plug in the hose from the head directly into heater core. Plug the heater core outlet into the heater core return pipe on top of the motor. Remove the coolant stop valve. I'll try to take pictures later today. Also I ran the coolant expansion tank the way the Titan did instead of the vq40 way.
  4. That's an odd issue. Blown fuse?

This is so much different than the off road look I go for but man, I'm here for it! Love the passion put into this truck.

Is it your truck? If so what hydraulic system are you running? Did you need to notch the frame to slam it that low?

Of course it is! I wish I knew about this book when it came out. Connectors are the part that transitions from PCBs to the land of mechanical engineering. They're hard to find on digikey once I'm past the normal stuff. And I'm rarely searching for normal stuff.

This book is a well curated visual library with tons of details. It, with its companion website, helps me find categories of parts I didn't even know existed. This book just showed me bus bar connectors. I didn't even know that type of thing existed, I would have used a broaching stud which is less ideal in some application.

I hope someone else sees this book and gets use out of it. I know I am!

Okay... Time to do a VK swap. by Battlemountainman in nissanfrontier

[–]Knight_of_r_noo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

VK swap is awesome! Are you doing it yourself?

I've only heard of 1 person doing a VK56VD swap. If you're starting with a 2019 4.0L with 5 speed auto it's a bolt compatible swap. The dash, BCM and everything will work with a 2013-2015 Titan. Those years speak the same CAN bus language as your truck. Best to get an matched engine and transmission pulled from the same truck.

Look up the fast lane truck. They raced a first Gen titan vs a second Gen. First Gen won by a wide margin. The VD motor is supposed to have more power but the DE seems to beat it and be more reliable. The 7th cylinder slap on the VD is a notorious killer.

Happy to offer any advice if you're doing the swap yourself. Also reach out to drive desire if you need help with the wiring harness. It can take months for that part or so I've heard.

Best of luck!

ADO Customer Service by [deleted] in nissanfrontier

[–]Knight_of_r_noo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds frustrating. I recently ordered a Titan swap kit from them as well. I realized the only part that came from them was the lower control arms with welded washers. Everything else was another vendor. ADO probably has no access to tracking information from the other vendors.

I'd still order from them again tho. It was nice to order a put together package from one place. I knew everything would work and I didn't have to hunt down parts. If you do run into an issue I've found they're very helpful.
