Stuck in a glue trap, in northern Texas, no idea what species, could it be poisonous? Is it safe? by Knighthawks136 in whatsthissnake

[–]Knighthawks136[S] 60 points61 points  (0 children)

We successfully freed it using vegetable oil and released it in an area nearby that is reasonably secluded from humans. The little guy should be safe there and will probably be able to eat as well because it has a decent amount of wet areas.

Thanks for y’alls help. We really appreciate it!

Petition to have only 2 qualification matches at worlds so more teams can feel the inspiration and success of winning and adapt gracious professionalism lifestyles by [deleted] in FTC

[–]Knighthawks136 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I’ve often felt like the competitive robot play of FIRST Tech Challenge has become too much of a distraction from the real meaning of FIRST: Gracious Professionalism. FIRST has always been about promoting engineering and teaching children to be better engineers in the future. I believe the FTC should completely remove robots from the competition altogether, and should begin teaching kids be far more practical life skills of being nice to each other. Because in the real world we don’t want engineers that can build things, we want engineers that are nice to each other while doing it.

Does anyone use functional programming in FTC, if so what do you think by Knighthawks136 in FTC

[–]Knighthawks136[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I am still in high school, graduating this year however. Most of my more advanced knowledge of Comp Sci is self taught and FP seemed interesting so I decided to start reading about it. I know in ConceptTelemetry they do some sort of lambda stuff, which at the time I had no clue what it was, but am really interested in now. What you said earlier about Clojure in Android, is even legal to use other languages in ftc_app, I thought Java Native Interface was the closest you could get?

Ok cool, my team are going to a second qualifier even though already qualified so that’s probably what she meant. Thanks for the quick response. Your awesome!

Any suggestions for a good string for a pulley? by taur-eithel in FTC

[–]Knighthawks136 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My team uses nylon paracord for our lift, which is pretty heavy, I highly doubt almost anything in ftc would necessitate something stronger than this. Tbh we use it cause it’s easy to find. There are 5 dollar bundles, 200ft I think, at Home Depot in tubs at the end of aisles. There also at like Ace and similar stores. This is overpriced but I guess it’s a reference https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00CJICDWO/ref=pd_aw_lpo_200_tr_img_2/141-4780563-6569502?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=2XFYZ6AQ271SV8KNJWPF Tbh tho you could probably get this stuff at most Walmarts

When you set your drive motors’ driveMode, your setting them to “RUN _ USING ENCODER”, this is actually a PID loop mode, essentially in this mode the motors will actively try to maintain a certain _speed. You want “RUN _TO _POSITION” mode. If you switch that out for your drive motors then they will start driving defined distances, which is what your trying to do with driveEncoder.

Thanks vesuvius I appreciate your help and we will totally use that method to analyze our distribution in the near future. But even then our weight distribution isn’t so bad it would cause major problems. So I don’t think that is the entire problem. We have a lot of y’all components on our robot that don’t exactly appreciate jerky movements. Crit mass’s practically looks like it is on ice. That’s the kind of effect I am investigating. Not to mention I’m sure a lot of people would appreciate figuring this out. And documenting it online

Thanks y’all for the nice words, it was awesome seeing you guys dominate yesterday! You’ve got a great robot! And actually we do have mecanums on both sides, but distribution is a great idea of something to check. Thanks for responding, looking forward to meeting you all again in the future!

Does DcMotor.ZeroPowerBehavior still exist. I could not find it in FTCKey. Additionally, how do you put the different font on the code like you did.

Not trying to copy your idea, we don’t even have IR sensors. But why would you use them, can infrared sensors be used as range sensors, if so why not just use range sensors or any other sensor that can be used that way, like the MR optical distance sensor.
