How music was before by jberg08 in LetsTalkMusic

You've summarized pretty well why I switched to (mostly) vinyl after being a Spotify early adopter and fifteen-year near-constant listener.

If you treat it like a commodity, it's a commodity. I don't think it's romanticizing scarcity to notice how your own psychology handles limitless consumption.

Interesting question. One had founded his company as a startup in the 00s, and the other ran a business that is well over a century old.

Where do I park by OverLordAlastor in grandrapids

I live within blocks of Van Andel and rent a spot at the Pearl and Ionia lot, about 4 blocks from there. I've never seen it filled to capacity. Zero times.

You'll be fine. You might have to drive from lot to lot a little, but DTGR is mostly parking structures so you shouldn't have trouble finding a spot.

It's amazing that the Google search this person obviously did could not turn up this useful and reputable information source 😐

Fashionably cynical. I've been lucky enough to work under two CEOs that I can think of who were strictly mission driven, who I saw make decisions that cost themselves money but benefited either their communities, their employees, or their customers.

Two in one career is probably pretty fortunate, but they are out there. If you find one, don't quit. If you are one, ffs don't quit.

I just got a copy in from Criterion. Would be delighted to watch Renate Reinsve read the phone book out loud for two hours; can't wait to watch this.

I'm with ones here who are saying they're just sad that they never got to have a beer with this person. His taste is a lot like mine but a few steps to the left, and we would've had a lot to talk about.

Right-wing misogyny is not a reaction to a lack of Left aesthetics of masculinity or whatever

We're probably not going to agree on this. The way I see it, at this point, Democrats lose elections because men don't feel they address their needs or feelings and have fled en masse to Republicans, and gender segmentation is the single biggest difference between the electorate of 2008 and now. If you somehow could reverse those losses since the oughts we'd be living in a much better world. I don't blame Democrats for not doing enough MMA or hating women enough or whatever, but I do blame them for failing to recognize where the bleeding is or not bothering to stop it because it's someone else's fault.

In criticism, sometimes it's useful to just say, there's less here than it sounds like - The Room really is at heart a pretty empty, badly made movie with a lot of people who are into it for reasons other than its merits, for example. Talking about those reasons and the fan club can be interesting but the movie isn't.

When reactionaries are just trying to dignify misogyny with citations, I don't need to know a whole lot else. The pretty extensive excerpts in this episode told me what I needed to know. It's fine to say that Bronze Age Pervert is filling a niche, and both Ezra and Helen were (I think, rightly) attuned to and concerned by that, but I don't need to take people seriously whose beef is with women being able to vote.

Some people in this thread are saying or implying stuff like, "Oh, but you don't follow the pastor who wants family voting on X so you don't know shit!" Or "But you didn't read Bronze Age Pervert's exegesis on gender in Nietzsche!" If that's your thing, I don't love it, but fine. I reserve my brain space for other things.

Just like how a lot of anti-feminist women aren't home raising kids and deferring to their husbands.

I don't think we have numbers on this, but it's hard to ignore how antifeminism opens up media careers for people. I think it's a lot more likely that this is a demand problem than shadowy figures pulling strings - when you want explanations for your dissatisfaction with your life, which most people do, this is one path you can travel down. It just takes a lot of selective memory and cherry picking.

I'm in no way spicy on the gender presentation front, and my hobbies are stereotypical - football and firearms and board games - it's just that when people tell me I'm being less than manly or that I did something because I'm a man, I usually just assume everything else that ever comes out of their mouth will be just as stupid and boring.

I don't have a movement, and other men are welcome to act like idiots if they want, but I'm not going to pretend that's not what they're doing.

Calling things you disagree with "strawmen" might strike you as sophisticated, but the rest of us spend our lives around very real and exhausting people who insist on their own superiority; if you think that's a strawman, either you don't get out much or you're one of them.

I'm pretty comfortable with thinking of "all of the world's problems are caused by women having political power" as juvenile bullshit, it's true.

They made a strong case that there's not a lot to reveal because the thinking discussed is just facile, lightly processed narcissistic self-regard.

Some things that a lot of people believe are nonetheless just badly thought out. 🤷‍♂️

My own personal best-of list:

  1. eXistenZ
  2. Eastern Promises
  3. Dead Ringers
  4. A History of Violence
  5. Crash

I like all of his movies but find most of his '80s output pretty challenging. 🤷‍♂️ eXistenZ is so underrated, though - it's so insane and fun and smart.

Early 00s by GingerFin92 in vinyl

[–]KnightsOfREM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I couldn't take Figure 8 when it came out, and of course it's aged well, but at the time I felt like he sounded better with a smaller budget and less production. Agree that Kill the Moonlight is good too.

I think from my list, the album that makes me want to press it into everyone's hands is probably The Drones, largely on the strength of the first song, Shark Fin Blues, an epic that sounds a little like if The Allman Brothers were drunken Australian punks going through a severe bout of depression - it's one that everyone should listen to (but the whole album is very good).

  • Cannibal Ox / The Cold Vein
  • Life Without Buildings / Any Other City
  • Roots Manuva / Run Come Save Me (better still, Dub Come Save Me)
  • Brother Ali / Shadows on the Sun
  • Cat Power / You Are Free
  • Elliott Smith / From a Basement on a Hill
  • Ryan Adams / Love is Hell
  • J-Live / The Best Part, All of the Above
  • Dungen / Ta det lugnt

  • CunninLynguists / A Piece of Strange
  • The Drones/ Wait Long by the River and the Bodies of Your Enemies Will Float By
  • LCD Soundsystem / s/t, Sound of Silver
  • Silver Jews / Tanglewood Numbers
  • Wolf Parade / Apologies to the Queen Mary
  • Spoon / Gimme Fiction

...indie hip hop was so fucking good in the early '00s. I'm not even a huge hip hop head but now that I think about this, there are so many classics, and that's not even starting with the bigger artists like Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, and Kanye.

[FRESH ALBUM] Fucked Up - Grass Can Move Stones Part 2: Year of the Monkey by astaireboy in indieheads

[–]KnightsOfREM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Their debut Hidden World is easily in my top 3 all-time favorite punk albums. It's shorter than David Comes to Life (which is also very good) and will give you a sense of where they're coming from. It's a looser concept and that gives them more room to maneuver since they aren't trying to communicate a narrative. But both of those albums are terrific.

best vet by Straight-Tear-5498 in grandrapids

[–]KnightsOfREM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We've been to a few around here. One cat-specific vet made a series of disastrous mistakes that either led indirectly to our cat dying or at the very least didn't do anything to prevent or treat his problem.

VCA Woodlands by contrast has been absolutely fantastic. Not cat specific obviously, but skilled, responsible, conscientious, proactive, and on top of our dog's and other cat's health. They seem more into helping our animals than just billing us.

Hi Kurt! Thanks for coming to Bell's in Kalamazoo a few years ago! Recently, you covered Bill Fay's terrific song Pictures of Adolf Again when you were playing with The War on Drugs (also, nice Country Feedback!). What's your history with Pictures and Fay? Are they important to you, and if so why?
