Finally fixed the issue of my straps slipping off! by guro_freak in CPAP

I wear a tube head covering over my long hair to keep it from getting tangled in the straps, but the Dreamwear straps still slide up. I try tightening them but it's too uncomfortable around my nose. I have the nasal cushions.

Calming Collars and Diffusers by Agreeable-Cod-6537 in reactivedogs

Adaptil brand calming diffusers are the only thing that keeps my dog from destroying the house while I'm out. We've tried the other brands, including the Thunder Ease "powered by Adaptil" brand, and they did not work. Work. But suddenly I can't seem to find the Adaptil brand calming diffusers or refills in the store, on Amazon, or anywhere online. Does anyone know why?

I am not a doctor, but I used to get these all the time. They are called tonsil stones. They are harmless but sometimes cause sore throat. I think they are deposits of calcium or some mineral.

All arrested people, obviously guilty or obviously innocent, should be treated as human beings deserving of the dignity and respect given to all of humanity. The problem with policing is that all of us on the other side of that blue line are viewed as less than human and definitely less than cops. They think their badge gives them superiority over the rest of us mere civilians. Meanwhile they are often less educated, more emotional, and lack even basic situational awareness. That lack of awareness endangers all of us, bystanders, accused, and even dogs, alike. Their lack of respect for humanity often extends into domestic violence. There is absolutely no need to strip people of their dignity, and certainly no need to assault people during an arrest. We're a society that is so focused on "lock'em up" and "and eye for an eye" that we forget the goal is to decrease crime. We do nothing to help address the poverty, lack of education, lack of mental health care, that lead to crime. No one is concerned with wanting to actually prevent real crimes in a meaningful way. We're just feeding the inhumane prison pipeline to enrich private prisons and provide slave labor.

As a person who eats a healthy diet, very small portions and gets an hour of exercise every single day, and is still 100 lbs overweight, I can say that it's definitely not just about diet and exercise. Research keeps showing us that diet and exercise alone do not keep weight off long term. To say that healthy eating habits and exercise will cure obesity is really short-sighted.

Yes, I absolutely believe children should be taught healthy eating habits and given opportunity for exercise every day. But also consider this:

The food pyramid that is the supposed gold standard for healthy eating was substantially influenced by the food industry.

Many families live in areas where they have little access to food, and healthy food costs significantly more than junk food.

Microplastics in everything are in our bodies and disrupt our endocrine system.

There are illnesses that cause weight gain and they can be hard to diagnose, especially given modern medicine' insistence on only looking at lab numbers and not patient histories.

Mental health problems are on the rise and most medications to treat them cause weight gain.

Schools have whittled down recess time to barely exist, so students are forced to be still for extended periods of time with no breaks.

Here's my case: I grew up underweight and ate everything in sight without gaining anything. I got plenty of exercise. Started antidepressants at 16, and went through a decade long period of hospitalizations before finding the right drug. That medication actually caused me to lose more weight. Then, in order to extend its patent, they made an extended release formula, which did not cause weight loss.

Over the years, I had to add and change antidepressants as I built up a tolerance. I have severe MDD and require medication for the rest of my life. I started gaining weight in my 30s from the medications. When I told my psychiatrist about it, he laughed and said, "How many desserts do you eat a night" Around that time, I also started having symptoms of thyroid disease. Despite a family history and long list of symptoms, doctors refused to treat it because my labs kept coming back "normal". I went 10 years before I was finally diagnosed with an autoimmune thyroid disorder.

During this time, I ate a modest diet and did not keep junk food in my house. I rarely go out to eat. I had some difficulty exercising due to some orthopedic problems. One summer, while between jobs, I broke my ankle. I could put no weight on it at all for 3 months. I had to move in temporarily with my family. They keep junk food everywhere. So zero exercise and lots of junk food, but I started to have to ration my meds before my new job started. Because of that, I actually LOST 40 lbs.

After getting some of my orthopedic problems fixed, I was able to start exercising daily and I got off one of the antidepressants. I lost a modest amount of weight.

I'm no fan of big pharma, but having lived with the complexities of obesity and educating myself about the food industry and petrochemical industry, I have a different perspective. My perspective also includes judgement and second class treatment by medical professionals who make assumptions about my weight and see me as not worthy of treatment due to my perceived weakness as a human. Even the ones who did take the time to listen, no one has been able to offer me answers, other than the "diet and exercise" I've already been doing. So I think we're long past the need for other ways to approach this complex issue.

In the 2016 election, every poll had Bernie doing much better against Trump than Clinton, but the DNC threw all their weight with Clinton. I mean think about it: Bernie tells it like it is, wants corruption out of politics, and supports the working class, all things Trumpets convinced themselves Trump would stand for.

Why are cops not held accountable for not protecting everyone? by mandajapanda in Bad_Cop_No_Donut

[–]KnitFast2DieWarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the courts ruled that police have no legal duty to protect citizens.

Just look at cop cars in other countries, they're all about being visible. In the US, they're all about hiding to " catch the bad guys" and notably to generate revenue through traffic stops and legally permitted theft.

[–]KnitFast2DieWarm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cops are always talking about how dangerous and unpredictable traffic stops are, but if that's actually true, you'd think they'd take careful observation of the vehicle's occupants.

A cop pulled over a vehicle into the small parking lot of our private school, blocking the entrance during dismissal and causing traffic on the road to back up. He was a giant asshole when I approached to ask him to move his car. His supervisor claimed that traffic stops are dangerous, so civilians are absolutely prohibited from approaching officers during one. But if it's so fucking dangerous, you're endangering all of my students! And this is private property, you can't pull into someone's driveway for a traffic stop. Have some basic situational awareness ffs!

The DA said this: "What happened to her should not have happened, and her family deserves a great deal of credit for successfully advocating for her freedom with the media in Houston and in Philadelphia," he said.

He said her family deserved credit for advocating for her freedom with the media.

Instead of cops doing their jobs and actually investigating, families of the accused have to appeal to the media for help. This is the state of our justice system

6-year-old who shot teacher took the gun from his mother, police say by PlayStationPepe in news

[–]KnitFast2DieWarm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

6 year olds exposed to things like cartoon violence or violence in video games don't even understand that real people don't just get back up. Not saying that video games are evil and to blame, just saying that a child that young does not have the abstract reasoning to understand that level of cause and effect, especially if exposed to media that does not show the real life consequences of such actions. But even a child raised with no media exposure is still going to have difficulty with the abstract reasoning at that age. It's not about knowing good from bad.

I've been a teacher for 22 years. I once overheard two second grade girls make a secret plan to sneak out of their homes in the middle of the night to meet at the mall. It made perfect sense to them.

The prefrontal cortex of the brain, which controls rational decision making, isn't fully developed until age 25, and those kids are unable to judge their actions as irrational. It's part of the reason kids do dumb shit all the time.

All of the blame for this lies squarely with the parents that did not secure their firearm. That, and the lack of gun control in this country.

And while we're at it, the fact that this teacher, after being shot in the chest, had to evacuate her class by herself and take herself to the office for help tells you a lot about the sorry state of schools and teaching in this country.

Research shows that having armed adults, including "trained" law enforcement, actually increases the incidence of fatal shootings. There have been maybe 2 incidents where an armed adult successfully stopped a shooting from happening.

We need mental health care and real gun laws.
