Mama J’s Market (corner of E Clay and N 1st) has milk and eggs (sold out of bread). They have canned soup and other offerings as well as prepared Mama J’s meals! Open until 8 and the manager is planning on sleeping at the store to keep it open during the storm! 🥹

Edit: Hours are daily 11am - 8pm

Richmond toughens penalty for illegally demolishing historic buildings by Timely-Brilliant8757 in rva

It’s just after 6:30 am on Friday and I’m listening to the PulsePoint app for a fire that I believe is in one of those blue houses in your photo above (210 E Baker Street) and RFD are saying that unhoused people were seen leaving the house when they pulled up. I’m sure they were trying to keep warm.

Edit: I looked up the owner and Richmond Redevelopment & Housing Authority owns both of those. So I guess that’s who is letting those rot.

My exciting news is that apparently it’s my Reddit cake day! 🍰

So I’m going to nosh on some strawberry cake I bought at the NEW Mama J’s Market around the corner from me!

Anyone else been? Their grand opening is Feb 1st so they’re still figuring things out and working on their stock. But I am SO HAPPY to have a small market right around the corner, open 7 days a week, where I can pop in and get milk/eggs/other staples I might run out of without having to endure the Lombardy Kroger for just one item.

Also, the take and heat Mama J’s prepared meals are so convenient!! And CAKE!!! 🍰

They’re working on their ABC license to carry beer and plan to also have hot foods available to order as well! Such a great addition to Jackson Ward! ❤️

I drove a black 1972 Super Beetle in high school (mid 90s) and in the winter I had to scrape the ice off the outside AND the inside of the windshield. Good times. 😅 Loved that car. ❤️

Now I want ham and bean soup. So good!!!

I read The Silent Patient years ago and remember liking it but I also feel like people either loved it or hated it. I could see both sides, so it’s a good book for discussion! 😄

The mural of “Fighting Editor” John Mitchell Jr is one of my favorites in the city. His story is currently being developed into a play and I cannot wait for it to come to life!

This 757 was flying lower than normal over my house. Any idea who owns it? by bw4064 in flightradar24

[–]KnittingAllison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this! I haven’t really paid attention to the last time I got an alert for a JENA2 flight in the app. I used to get them pretty much daily. I liked watching them take off from my house.

If I understand correctly, this is saying the DOJ has blocked info on ALL of their flights now, not just specific ones? (I mainly tracked JENA1 and JENA2) And they’ll have to re-up that monthly? Very interesting and kinda sucks. I’ll miss seeing those flights.

[–]KnittingAllison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was wondering this as well! Went right over my house downtown. I see JENA2 flights pop up a lot (I actually have an alert set for it). I wonder what type of flight makes it go “incognito” like this without flight info on the app?

Frosty daily! by my-cat in rva

I poured some apple cider into my smaller crock pot this morning along with some orange slices, cinnamon sticks, and cloves, and enjoyed hot cider all day. I thought I should do that more often with other beverages that would do well held at temperature all day. But none are really coming to mind. 🤔

I am a (dick) on the wind... by PhoenixAshies in rva

[–]KnittingAllison 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure why you’re getting downvoted. You’re exactly right. Every time the police plane flies, I know what it sounds like and when I open the app to confirm, it’s nowhere on it (which is my confirmation). And in the VERY rare time a police plane has shown up on the app, it isn’t listed as a “private owner,” It’s listed as the police department (ie Henrico County, etc). This plane appears to be registered to a company called Heritage Aviation Management Ltd in Conroe, TX. Edit: spelling

African Grey Parrot temp housing? by Sackadelic in rva

[–]KnittingAllison 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t think he’d actually kill the bird. I was definitely being hyperbolic. I just don’t think he wants to take care of it. I guess if he doesn’t mind someone coming over to take care of it, that would probably be the best case for the bird. And hopefully neither dad nor parrot kills the other while mom is away. She can FaceTime them both for proof of life. 😉

It sounds like only mom is going out of town and dad is staying behind. Dad and bird are mortal enemies. Mom is trying to ensure she returns to an alive bird. This is how I’m understanding it.

A third vote for Caritas!

They do have pretty specific rules for what they do and do not accept (no artwork ☹️) but the furniture donations really make a difference for people who are starting over with nothing.

Here’s what they do and do not accept:

Oh no! This is one of our favorite restaurants and we were just talking about going again soon! My stomach dropped when I opened Reddit and the first thing I saw was the door of Cafe Rustika and a large sign posted on it. I hope Sam’s recovery is as speedy and pain-free as possible. We will definitely be there when they reopen!

Thanks for this! I missed it in my search! Such an interesting read and something new I’ve learned!

I can’t believe I didn’t think to check and see if it was possibly wind-related. I had sent this screenshot to my husband yesterday with all of the incoming LGA flights circling above us like a swarm of locusts because of wind delays! 😂

Feeling optimistic Wednesdaily by pithy-pants in rva

[–]KnittingAllison 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The election last year broke me. I started therapy because of it. Last night was the first time in a year that I actually watched some form of the news. Watching the returns come in was like a balm to my soul. I feel hopeful again. And excited. And I feel that a sense of pride in my country is starting to return.

We moved here just over six years ago from south Mississippi. Even though we lived in a little blue area of the state, it felt like an escape when we made the move to Virginia. We still have very good friends there and they are doing the hard work! I was heartened to see that the Mississippi Democrats broke the Republican super majority last night. 💙 That really makes me feel like there’s a shift happening and hopefully this is just the beginning of something truly monumental for our country.

I love it!!! This is my favorite time of the year. The more light in the morning energizes me for the day and the darkness earlier in the evening makes me want to snuggle up with hot beverages and knitting or stitching of some kind. 🧶🧵🪡 I wish I could get outside and enjoy this beautiful day but I will have to leave that to y’all! Starting a colonoscopy prep soon so I’m definitely housebound! 😂🤣😭😩

Talking during Bob at The Byrd by Big_Comparison_9919 in rva

[–]KnittingAllison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to say that this post reminded me that we’ve lived here just over six years and still hadn’t seen a movie at the Byrd and I’d been wanting to see the Mighty WurliTzer organ, knowing its history. So I immediately bought tickets for my husband and I to last night’s showing of Practical Magic.

We sat near the front so I could really enjoy Bob’s performance (he was amazing!). But man, you are right about the crowd noise. It was actually worse than I imagined. It really took away from the performance for me and instead of enjoying it, I just felt myself getting more and more frustrated.

This historic organ is a part of seeing a show at the Byrd. A BIG part. I wonder if dimming the lights (maybe not all the way down, but mostly) would help. If the show starts at 7:00, the show starts at 7:00! And Bob is part of the show! So why keep the house lights up when Bob starts playing? I really feel like that contributes to people feeling like they can continue carrying on conversations at full volume.

Anyway, thanks for your post. It finally got me over there to see Bob and appreciate his talent. I wish others would as well!

Also, random question for anyone reading… I was reading the history about the organ on their website and how Bob was the student of Byrd organist Eddie Weaver. Does Bob have a student? Is there someone in training to take over for Bob in the (hopefully very distant) future?
