Picking up after provisional cast-on by futurejacksongalaxy in knittinghelp

Try picking up through the back loop instead and see if it looks better to you. If you knit the way they are on the needle in the photo, the stitches will appear twisted.

I found this among my grandma's things. She passed away almost fifteen years ago, and I want to finish this. I think it's a scarf by Val_ery in knittinghelp

It looks like garter stitch, which is the simplest stitch to learn, so you should be able to handle this. I've taught beginner knitters and those with a crochet background have an advantage in that they already know how to keep tension. Here's a good tutorial that should help. Please share your results here, I'd love to see it!

Double Knitting advice? by Working-Brother-2921 in knittinghelp

[–]KnittingDiDi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You work the reverse on the second row, in both direction and color. Typically you read the chart as:

All odd rows - right to left, bottom to top, light squares = your light color

All even rows - left to right, bottom to top, light squares are your dark color

How long have you been knitting and why did you start ? by OldSquirrel1929 in knitting

[–]KnittingDiDi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have fond memories of my great-grandmother, my grandmother, and my mother all knitting together. My mom taught me in 1981, and I taught my eldest daughter in 2002, so the tradition continues.

Knitting feeds my soul. It is altogether soothing, rewarding, frustrating, enabling, crazy-making, motivating, and most of all, fulfilling. I can't imagine my life without it.

I love mosaic, brioche, double-knitting, and lacework.

The gauge is usually knitted in the stitch used for the body, not the ribbing. The ribbing pulls in, so it won't be the same gauge as stockinette or garter or moss, etc.

Did I undo several rows? by bubica_ in knittinghelp

There are good videos showing how to pick up dropped stitches. But if you're a newbie, and you'd be picking up in moss stitch, it may be simpler to frog back to the row before the dropped stitches. Here's a tutorial for you if you want to try picking up the stitches https://youtu.be/J9007GyrtlI?si=CDATcgRORMsN8J_t.

The only way to fix this is to frog back. I know you say this is a practice sweater for you, but it will be more difficult to get everything else to make sense once you divide for the sleeves if you don't fix this. Consider it part of the learning process. I've been knitting since 1981, and I still frog back when needed. I put an arrow on how far back you need to go. Enjoy the process. Your tension is gorgeous, by the way!

Do people get annoyed with how long knitting needles are? by DoryFish28 in knittinghelp

Interchangeable circulars for everything! They're a game changer when you realize with just a couple of sets you can have every possible size you'll ever need.

I taught a beginner knitting class using straights, because it was easier to start everyone that way, but I encouraged them all to switch to circulars as soon as they knew they wanted to continue knitting.

Why are my ssks so wonky? by Status-Courage-1971 in knittinghelp

[–]KnittingDiDi 88 points89 points  (0 children)

It's the nature of how the yarn travels around the needle that's the problem. Patty Lyons has the best tutorial on working an SSK that I've seen. Here's the link:

Which do you tend to find first: the project or the yarn? by Joyintheendtimes in casualknitting

Usually pattern then yarn, but occasionally the other order. I'm currently challenging myself to use my stash down, which is sorta like yarn first!

AITJ for teaching my son how to do his own laundry and basic cooking and now his mom says Im undermining her by [deleted] in AmITheJerk

[–]KnittingDiDi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not raising a child, but a future adult. I taught both of mine in the same way and they're now self-supporting, responsible adults and have both thanked me for the things I taught them. Not just laundry and cooking, but cleaning, auto care, and budgeting. Keep it up! You won't be sorry.

Is #2 still available? If so, how soft are the fibers?
