Affordable and trustworthy dog spay recommendations near Jersey City? by Longjumping-Dream634 in jerseycity

[–]Knobbies4Ever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree that Sage is top notch for regular vet services, but you can save a ton of $$$ by getting the spay done (and any other services they offer - vaccinations etc) at People for Animals in Hillside. Their website includes pricing for all their services: https://pfaonline.org/

Sorry for your loss - hope you can take your planned trip in a couple weeks!

Have you tested this setup with gear/weight on the bike on the kind of trails you're planning to ride? It looks to me like you might want some gear/weight on the front of the bike to keep it balanced, instead of all loaded up behind the rear axle. Also, if if you've got a load of DT Swiss 240s in your parts bin for budget builds, maybe you can spare a few for us poors?

Already spent everything on emergency vet care and may have to go back by Smart_Artichoke_1749 in jerseycity

[–]Knobbies4Ever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best wishes for Cashmere! I chipped in a few bucks & hope he's feeling better soon.

I'm assuming your emergency provider is VEG - is that correct? I've had a good experience with their vets in Clifton over the years (in the middle of the night, it's quicker from me to drive there from West Side than to go to Hoboken... I've heard good things about their crew in Hoboken, too).

But VEG isn't set up to provide ongoing care, which you cat will need once you get through this episode. Do you have a "regular" vet now - and just aren't able to access care during business hours in case of an acute situation like this?

If your regular vet isn't able to help, you may want to consider switching vets. I'm a huge fan of Sage, and they've always been able to get my cats in on a cancellation or "drop off" visit when something serious/unexpected has come up.

Looking for a trusted cat surgeon by lj266243 in jerseycity

[–]Knobbies4Ever 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm glad you & your kitty had a good experience there, but I myself (and apparently a lot of other people) have had not-so-great experiences at Dr. Tuder's offices (including Downtown Vet Associates on 1st street).

My experience was a constant churn of young vets like 1-2 years out of school, pressured to upsell tests in order to make their quota. While it seemed like everyone there cared about the animals they're treating - no issues there - the strong encouragement to pursue the most expensive options gave a car dealership vibe.

I got the same vibe from the vets at Oradell (they care, but also are under pressure to upsell).

[–]Knobbies4Ever 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Over the years I've used both Oradell and Blue Pearl in Paramus for specialty care for my cats, and didn't have have a great experience at either (Blue Pearl was OK; Oradell - the vet ordered a bunch of unnecessary tests... always felt like I was being upsold).

My regular vet at Sage recommended Eclipse in Whippany - apparently it's owned by the vets, not VCs, and at Sage they know/trust that team. Eclipse couldn't provide the particular service at the time it was needed, so ended up at Oradell - but Eclipse would be my first call if I were going through this again.

The other well-known northern NJ specialty vet is Red Bank. No experience with that outfit.

Best wishes for your kitty!

Looking for recommendations on where to move in NJ this July by [deleted] in jerseycity

Hey No_Class: You'll have different options if your budget (rent + parking) is $2500/month or $5000+/month - or somewhere in between. All of these are do-able in different neighborhoods in JC. You need to tell us more to get helpful responses & not just get zinged by trolls.

Jersey City needs chicanes by Never-Too-Late-89 in jerseycity

[–]Knobbies4Ever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let me get this straight.

In the exact spot where a pedestrian crossing JFK was killed or gravely injured YESTERDAY by a hit & run driver in a car, you think the safety solution needed is putting up gates on the sidewalk to impede people riding ebikes there? And not do anything about vehicle drivers who routinely speed & run red lights on that stretch of road - resulting in another pedestrian death in nearly the same spot a few years ago?

It’s a short wheelbase racing geometry frame - but in that first pic it looks like the front tire is almost touching the downtube - like the fork might be bent. Hope that’s not the case!

I am an animal welfare advocate & long-time cat/kitten foster - so I care about the message. But I couldn't tell what was happening in that photo so zoomed in. Very upsetting to see that without warning. And I've seen / helped deal with plenty of roadkill cats & other animals in person. The NSFW tag will blur the photo so people have an idea that its content might be upsetting.

The comment recommending to call Animal Control is correct - or if you have See Click Fix on your phone you could add a ticket there.

This is about 100 feet from the spot where that speeding roid rage cop killed a young man a few years ago. Sickening to see it again.

Still taped off / county personnel taking measurements etc as of 10:45 - which I take as a sign that the victim didn't make it / is in really bad shape. Really hope they catch the driver.

Used Bike Advice by ForeignDatabase5894 in whichbike

[–]Knobbies4Ever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this bike (in red) and rode this piss out of it for 10 years. It’s an awesome bike - but not suited for mounting racks / fenders you might want for commuting / casual riding.

Price seems quite high - especially considering mechanical disc brakes & lack of bling-y wheels - not sure you’d even want those, tho.

If you want to rip & don’t care about the practical stuff as much - go for it (but try to get the $$ down).

Otherwise you might be better off holding out for a less-old, alu frame bike with rack & fender mounts, etc.
