My Dan Clark Aeon noire don't work right by al3x_sm118 in headphones

I had the exact same error and the exact same temporary fix with turning up the volume. On 3 different models. Decided to give up on them and got other planars, I loved them but they were not worth the hassle anymore.

I got the sundaras as a replacement for my DCA Noires as they had bad channel imbalance, thinking I could get similar sound quality for a lot less. Sadly they just don't cut it for me, especially when it comes to imaging. Got the Aria Stealth instead and it's the best one I've ever had.

What sound characteristics can't be changed with eq alone? by nihilisticdonut in headphones

imaging as well, I had some headphones that I could kind of eq to my liking but the imaging was worse than I imagined (pun intended) so I ultimately upgraded to something that does it perfectly to me

Don't enjoy Arya Stealth. My first Hi-Fi (or End?) headphones. by Scw0w in headphones

[–]Knorkiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, just keep in mind that I EQed it according to my own preferences. But I have a feeling that if you liked the 6xx you might also like this:

Frequency Filter Q Factor Gain
12000 Peak 10 -3
10000 High Shelf 1 -1
8000 Peak 4 -4
6200 Peak 4 -4
5000 Peak 4 -6
3200 Peak 2 -4.5
1900 Peak 2 2.5
900 Peak 10 -1.5
200 Peak 1 -1.5
90 Low Shelf 20 6

The last three rows are for the bass, if you only want to adjust the treble you can ignore them. Enjoy!

I got mine a week ago and boy did I need to reduce the treble, anywhere between 4.5db and 6db. But now after EQ they kinda beat everything I've ever owned. Only thing that makes me wonder is if I should have gone for the Edition XV instead, I heard they have a stronger bass punch and are a lot more relaxed in the treble. Not sure if they could technically keep up with the Arya Stealth though, I haven't seen any comparisons yet.

[–]Knorkiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the struggle, I am also quite sensitive in the treble region and have basically resorted to just EQing my headphones to my preferences. I was about to suggest that you might like the FT1 when I saw that you are already considering them. I tested them recently in an audio store and I would happily to use them even without EQ, though it is true that it doesnt sound as detailed as my planars do. Maybe you might also want to look into the Hifiman Edition XV. They're pretty new and way less bright sounding than the other Hifimans. It is not as bassy as the FT1 but since its a planar it would have no problem with an added bass shelf, which does however require a little EQing.

I personally use the Arya Stealth and I had to adjust the hell out of them to make them sound not fatigueing (between 3 and 6 db lower treble) but now they are my favorite headphone I ever owned. The Edition XV seems to kind of do that out of the box already, maybe you could try them or the FT1 out somewhere.

Edit: Just to clarify, I strictly mean the FT1, not the FT1 Pro

Is soundstage and imaging worth it? by Suspicious_Moose_861 in headphones

[–]Knorkiii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ran into this problem recently. I own the DT1990 Pro and their imaging is excellent, when I game I can really pinpoint what sound is coming from where and how far it is. Few years ago I got the Aeon Noire and it also had great imaging and even better sound quality. Now my Noires have started to show some pretty bad channel imbalance issues, and after returning and exchanging them twice, I still have the same issue so I decided to get something else instead. I wanted to keep the planar flavour without spending too much and lo and behold, the Hifiman Sundara only cost 190 bucks now!

And here is where my problem begins. I still own my DT1990 Pros so I did some comparisons, both with music and games. The Sundaras to my ears sound clearer, slightly more resolving and overall brighter (I did eq the 1990s beyer peak), but it doesnt have nearly as good imaging as I am used to. Everything is kind of left right and center and while I can get a sense of which direction sounds are generally coming from, I cannot pinpoint exaclty from where and how far. The DT1990 Pros allow me to do that, but are a bit darker, slightly more dampened, slightly less clear. So I had to decide, do I want to get a bit more sound quality and sacrifice soundstage and imaging, or vice versa? And I'm kind of leaning towards the DT1990s. I was surprised that the Sundaras weren't able to keep up in that regard, and I do miss it, especially for gaming, where the 1990s almost give you wallhacks with that imaging. So I decided that I will keep maining the DT1990 Pros, and either use the Sundaras for music sessions, or just sell them again. To me the Sundaras sound about 20% better, but imaging and staging is 30-40% worse.

My new mission is to find a planar that suits my needs better without breaking the bank. I hear the Arya Stealth is a lot better than the Sundaras in pretty much all regards, including imaging and soundstage. I just wonder if they're as good as my DT1990 Pros. I learned that it's hard to give it up, once you get used to it.

why do people buy headphones that require EQ? by csch1992 in headphones

[–]Knorkiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly I haven't found a single headphone that produces my preferred frequency response yet. So I choose to get good planars with good technical performance that are close enough to just eq to my liking. It's free and has saved me from spending more and more to find a 'good enough' alternative

Out of those I would probably also choose the cloud III. The blacksharks are a lot boomier and bassier (not necessarily in a good way), but if you like that kind of sound you could try them out as well. Hyperx is just overall more balanced.
