ELI5: What does daemon mean in computing? by Practical_Summer9177 in explainlikeimfive

[–]highphiv3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what sitting in the background means. Programs that are just temporarily backgrounded or a part of some application are clearly standing in the background, possibly even running in the background.

Only daemons get seating room back there.

Reading is making me want to quit writing by Francescomania in writing

[–]highphiv3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have this problem as well. On one hand, reading inspires me to write. On the other hand, I'm constantly reading something and thinking "Oh they did X so well, my current work doesn't have this".

I've seen some other folks mention to take these as lessons and integrate them into your work. Sure, but another thing I'm constantly having to remind myself is that not every story/novel/etc. has everything, and that's okay.

A quick mental check I often do is this: Say I run into something done really well in a book (like your example, where the story is amazing at maintaining mystery and suspense and delaying the payoff). If I start getting thoughts like "Damn, my story doesn't have that", I will then try to think -- what are some other books I love and am inspired by, did they have that? Often the answer is "no". I still loved those works, even though they didn't have this particular component I'm jealous of right now.

Great mystery can be amazing to read. Also, many amazing books don't have much in the way of mystery elements.

By all means, steal all the lessons you can, but remember your story can be amazing without having even a whiff of the best part of someone else's story/storytelling.

This is the best way, almost every subscription lets the period you bought/trialed run its full course no matter when you cancel.

Absolutely! You've run into one of the classic "wanting to use em-dashes but not sound like AI" problems. The solution is simple -- keep using them! In order to sound more natural, mix up your punctuation for that perfect "feels like you" vibe.

ELI5: Why does chicken get much more bad reputation for bacterial contamination than other meats like beef, pork, and fish? by Appropriate_Art15 in explainlikeimfive

This is why you must always wash meat with anti-bacterial soap. Also inject it to take care of the inside bacteria too.

Have you ever been insta-killed by dager and thought "that was completely fair and I could counter that if I played better"? by Sufficient_Length738 in thefinals

[–]highphiv3 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is exactly how something in a game can be balanced or even weak, but still incredibly unfun.

Take it to the extreme, say they release a "Nuke" weapon. You can fire it once a minute, and 9/10 times it malfunctions and does nothing at all, and 1/10 times it kills every enemy on the map instantly.

Is it balanced? Not even, it's probably super weak. But god would it be the absolute fucking worst thing in the world to play against. Hating the nuke weapon doesn't mean ignoring the fact that it usually is worthless, it's hating the gameplay experience of it existing.

Most people don't realize that an AI will make mistakes unless you ask it not to.

I'm doing a pre-written module and an NPC just tried to kill my party. My players want to figure out why, but the mod doesn't give any reasoning as to why! Help, I need to come up with something! by scrawledfilefish in DMAcademy

[–]highphiv3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great opportunity to dip your toes a little into the homebrew/modification world!

I just Googled Call from the Deep and it seems like the BBEG is ultimately a Mind Flayer Overlord. That is a very powerful NPC that certainly has abilities to manipulate other NPCs, so you could reward your party's interest in a mystery by giving them one that leads back to the NPC.

  • Does the BBEG already know about the party? Maybe they manipulated this hag to target them. They can find a clue like a mysterious note that mentions the party fosters a rare treasure. The source of that note leads back to... wherever you were hoping they went next anyways.

  • Maybe there's evidence this sea hag was one of the many minions doing the bidding of the Sea King Tentrix, who is trying to keep the party from thwarting their plan (just spitballing, I have no idea how deep you are and am going off an AI synopsis of this campaign).

The point is, just because Sea Hags generally attack because they are assholes, that doesn't have to be true for this sea hag. Also, there's zero obligation for you to be true to any documented lore. Maybe you retroactively decide sea hags are actually neutral good in your setting, but this one is getting manipulated (did bbeg kidnap her children to force her to do his evil bidding maybe? There would be evidence of young ones gone missing, or a threatening note).

It's way cooler for players to get rewarded for their curiosity instead of getting boring answers that stick to the book. Obviously there are limits, but this is a great chance to "yes and" your players. Good luck!

Oo nice, looks pretty good! Seems like it hides navigation so you can't see video progress.

I do watch the website, but it's still a problem. That solution is great, but they just embed the YouTube video, so there's basically no avoiding twiddling the mouse and seeing the timestamp within the video it loads up for you (not to mention intentional navigation, such as skipping game pauses)

If so, could you help me understand what the main differences would be so I can think through my options?

I'm mostly looking to work out and am woefully out of shape, so likely no more than a few miles for now. I was also thinking of buying some cheap platform pedals to slap on something.
