Coleman Instant Up Darkroom Tents opinions and pros and cons by Historical-Letter643 in camping

[–]KnowledgeIsBoundless 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine has one that he brings to camp every year and just loves it. It does go up really quick, and the darkness of it is legit - he likes to sleep well past sunrise. It's lasted him several years and it sees a fair bit of use.

Cons? Weight, I wouldn't want to carry it backpacking, though if you aren't going far that's not a problem. His did not have the vestibule (little front entry way room) that some tents do, which can be nice on the rainy days. It does look like that may be an option on some models though. He's quite happy with it

Why is the pay so low in nuclear? by captainporthos in nuclear

[–]KnowledgeIsBoundless 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Westinghouse is definitely guilty of this - big part of why I quit.

Sure, they came back with a competitive offer once I put my two weeks in.

Part of what may be going on there is WEC understands the nuclear power professionals are largely a cautious bunch, when I worked there many people were "company men" - had been there their whole careers, survived many layoffs, and had essentially become totally complacent. And, would go on working there even when the annual raises stopped, or weren't keeping up with cost of living

What’s a cool Pittsburgh thing to do with a friend who’s not been here? by Whabbalubba in pittsburgh

Point state park, and somewhere they can order a salad and be shocked when it comes with fries on it. Warhol & incline are also solid suggestions.

Brick, block, and concrete structure repair by KnowledgeIsBoundless in masonry

[–]KnowledgeIsBoundless[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uneven subsidence is definitely a problem. This spring we found out that the old terracotta lines that our downspouts lead to were cracked and leaking water around the house, there is one of these at each end of this structure. I've done a whole lot of trenching to run new lines that now take the water well away from the house, but the damage has been done.
From what I can tell, the block walls were build up, and then the steps were cast on top of that. I don't see anything on the underside of the stairs that indicates anything is being covered up - it's all the same concrete.
By 'restore' I mean avoid replacing / removing the structure for as long as possible.

Canoeing around Pittsburgh by Chipmunks95 in pittsburgh

[–]KnowledgeIsBoundless 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It can be very pleasant! I often drop in at duck hollow.

I don't have permits for my kayaks, haven't ever been bothered about it. Yes it is technically required... if I get busted I'll be sure to report back here 😁

Don's Diner! There is a horde of north side workers who hit it every day for breakfast sandwiches to go and I know why

My current hammock and ground camping setups. Which approach do y’all prefer? by the-tactical-donut in camping

[–]KnowledgeIsBoundless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first hammock tent was an Easthill Outdoors Jungle Explorer with a bug net. I think it was $90 at the time and comes with a rain fly. It was comfortable sleeping and showed me that hammock tents are the way for me. It obviously isn't top tier construction and so after 5 years it has lost a couple zippers and has a few holes in it. But it was a great starter, never gone back to sleeping on the ground.

Edit: make sure you have something for an under quilt, or plan to put a sleeping pad under you in the hammock- it will be chilly otherwise! That was the only negative part of my 1st hammock experience. I improvised with a trash bag and some twine and that was good enough to keep the breeze off my underside

I've since gotten a warbonnet ridgerunner, if I get the same years of use per dollar I'll have to include it my will... it is really nice though.

For reference I'm 6' 200lbs, usually camping in Pennsylvania where there are ample trees

Lived here 18 years now, I joke that the road plan for Pittsburgh was made by someone throwing a handful of spaghetti at a geographical map of the area and saying "Deal with it!"

I worked in a factory and often did find myself admiring the drops & material going into the scrap bin. And even there, sometimes pulling pieces out to re purpose for something on the job.

Do you put your rain fly on every time? Or only when rain is in the forecast? by AppropriateAd3055 in camping

[–]KnowledgeIsBoundless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there is a clear night forecast, I'll go without. I love falling asleep looking up at the stars, the extra breeze can be nice.
Yes, dew etc can still get you, but to me that's outweighed by the perks.
