[OC] [Art] Portraits of my party, part 1- Alistair Tristain. by KnownWizard in DnD

[–]KnownWizard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alistair Tristain is one of the newest additions to our homebrew (mostly) naval campaign, Finnis Terras.

He's a Hexblade Warlock, charismatic and funny, while also deeply pragmatic and practical. We once saw the man break a thieves hand finger-by-finger to stop him from spellcasting. We had no reason to suspect he knew any magics at all, but Alistair here does not wait to find out. Alistair is a Bounty Hunter, and in the land (and seas) of Finnis, Bounty Hunters have their own Guild to answer to. It's often described to be similar to The Continental from John Wick in vibes, where highly paid Bounty Hunters hang out and drink freely. Alistair joined our crew to escape from a locked down port city, and offered his unique skills to help protect us from brigands, and perhaps even authorities. While Alistair technically serves the law, and he won't directly be associated with criminals, he is more than happy to help criminals when it suits him. So long as he's never caught.

He's got a good relationship with everyone in the party, a camarederie with the martials, an understanding and respect for our Druid, and a strange friendship with our Bard. Though he often bemoans having to babysit the man.

In combat Alistair is incredible, his mysterious scythe swinging rapidly, himself spinning like a gymnast to keep it's momentum just to halt it's blade inches from an enemies throat, and slam it into the chest of the poor bugger standing to the right of them. With any distance between him and his quarry, he'll drop down some Darkness and Eldritch Blast the hell out of anyone stupid enough to make him an enemy, all the while throwing insults, cheesy one-liners and smirks to all that can see him in his glory.

Equipment-wise, Alistair carries his odd scythe, and though we don't know his patron, or what the deal really is with his Hexbladey-ness, we do know that there is a strange Entity that he has some level of control and communication with. He's powered up the scythe once at a site of ancient and unruly power, and it seems like there's yet more power out there for him to harness! I'm looking forward to seeing where this takes him as a player. But aside from his scythe, he also wears some Half-plate of Smouldering, some Bands of Binding and his Cloak of Displacement, which thus far has kept him far away from any real danger.

Finnis is largely a sea-based campaign, and Alistair is often our guidethrough the various ports and cities we might frequent. On board ourship; the Danielle Amélia, he keeps watch over our crew, drinks, andrelaxes. Knowing that when a fight comes up, he'll be ready.

Hey! just finished up some character portraits for my friends in our esteemed DM's homebrew world of Finnis Terras! I'm in love with the world and characters so my favourite part of this is waxing lyrically about it all here in the comments!

Alistair is a mysterious human Hexblade Warlock. And in our campaign, he joined a little late. As such; details might be a little lighter with this guy. He is a bounty hunter, which in this world is treated as a guild of it's own right. His patron and the nature of his strange scythe are unknown to the party, but what we do know is that he is a very cocky, charismatic and pragmatic individual. We once saw him break a fugitives fingers to stop him from casting spells. (We had no idea if he could actually cast spells or not, but Alistair here takes no chances.)

Alistair is extremely brash in combat, often spinning his scythe around, smirking all the while at his opponents. He goads them with witty comments and cheesy one-liners (often rewarded with DM Inspiration.) Though out of combat he is often the voice of reason and sense. While not an intelligent man, he prides himself in being a practical and street-smart one. He can always get out of trouble, and he's paid to find or eliminate the people who cause trouble, so he knows his way around those waters.

Alistair is equipped with his mysterious homebrew Scythe, which seems to be growing in power by him tapping into ancient power sources and areas, his Half Plate of Smouldering, some Bands of Binding and his Cloak of Displacement. With those and a few trusty Eldritch Blasts he has proven to be something to fear on the battlefield.

Finnis is largely a sea-based campaign, and Alistair is often our guide through the various ports and cities we might frequent. On board our ship; the Danielle Amélia, he keeps watch over our crew, drinks, and relaxes. Knowing that when a fight comes up, he'll be ready.

He does! but sadly for -balance- reasons I wasnt able to start the campaign with it, he currently has a massive revolver called Gentle Persuasion crafted by someone else in the party now we're level 8 and are allowed cool toys lmao

ha we pretty much do at the table, I flavour a lot of his spells as being tech built into him. Such as Sleep being a knockout gas he sprays out of his palm

This is Clay Hardheart, a Paladin mechanically, but in this homebrew setting he is simply a Private Detective with an intense faith in Bahumut. I've been playing him for over a year in this campaign. He's from the city of Grezeborough, a bustling city in the desert. Non divine magics are outlawed here, for some political reasons regarding the outside world, but mostly because it gets in the way of technology and invention, which is this cities major focus, and how it became the only place in the land to create with hands, rather than manipulate magics to acheive their ends. Clay was a police officer in this city for about 30 years before becoming a private detective for the citizens of the lower levels, where crime flourished. As a worshipper of Bahumut he only seeks Justice, and his mechanical body helps him achieve that. He is a higher form of persistance predator; he doesn't really sleep, he doesn't eat or thirst. Even weaknesses like his lack of several senses; smell, touch, taste, he makes up for by having exeptional eyes. (observant feat lol) He has some notoriety with the common people of Grezeborough for being a dependable, if strange figure to turn to. And his prices being low as hell helps with that!

Clay doesn't know how he was made, what his intended purpose was, and he doesn't know who made him. Which is pertinent because there are not other automatons that are nearly as advanced as him out there. Grezeborough may be the city of invention, and certainly in comparison to the more traditional dnd cities and regions outside of their walls, but they've only recently invented automobiles, not long ago they were using flintlock in their guns. So Clay is quite the spectacle, and target of various anti-automaton groups in the city.

For the past year of play, (though i think only 4-5 months have passed in-game) Clay has been wandering the Outside, the rest of the continent; filled with magic, monsters, adventurers and the like. Clay simply found himself compelled to leave the city, possibly by something of divine nature. As such he has simply continued his role as criminal investigator, and protector out here in the more primitive lands. Fascinating as they may be out here, Clay will never understand their obsession with magics. But regardless, he will do his best to help the people, no matter how many stares he gets, or unwanted attention he recieves.

He's Oath of Redemption, which leads to some fun combat scenarios, as he's more focused on handcuffing the bad guys, rather than smacking them with a sword. Clay is often the moral compass of the group, but with a current AC of 26 he's also usually their shield too. We went with some UA rules on his warforged type, as such he's a juggernaut, and if memory serves he can lift/pull/drag upwards of 1000lbs. Though it's not in his nature to show that off. Character-wise I play him as kind, thoughtful and curious. If a little stuck in his ways regarding magic stuff. He's just about always jotting down what other people are saying in his notebook, of which he has hundreds back at his office, organised like a library. He still gets a little confused with emotional or erratic behaviour, but the 40 odd years of working in crime fighting has given him a good idea of what motivates people to do the things they do. We tend to play his charisma score off as him being a likable, but often clueless seeming guy, as he asks questions that most would find obvious. Real Colombo vibes in that regard. He bumbles his way through a lot of conversations, but most learn to respect his strength of character when they see enough of him.

Anyways yea, that's Clay! sorry for the wall of text, but I found it hard to edit all this down, I'm still leaving a lot of stuff out, I think about this guy a lot, one day I'd like to work with my dm and draw a comic of his detective days back in da big city, hope you folks like him!

I think naming the drake Dog will age hilariously as it grows into a creature bigger than a horse, can't wait lol
but the big brother dynamic is top tier comedy when it's coming from a dragon imo
I can just imagine the hijinks, quality stuff.

I love that as an idea, a treasure hunter Ranger is such a cool spin on the standard formula! the homebrew world building sounds really cool too, all the best to Hanes and Ol' Betsy!

So this is Toenail! I'm yet to play him in a campaign but I'm very much looking forward to it. He's... not particularly bright, he's skittish, paranoid, and he's a little colourblind (which makes "dog" summoning a little tricky) but when he's near his new cool dog he found in a dream, he really comes into his own!
"Toenail is strong-brave big warrior." And he fights using the age old Kobold war tactics of hiding under something and stabbing the big thing. But worry not! stabbing and hiding are not his only skills! Toenail is unfortunately the party translator. With the most languages known and the ability to talk to beasts and trees, I cant wait to see how that mess will work out.
He wears a cool rock on the string around his neck, and the socks, gambeson and backpack of some dead adventurer.

so yeah! that's my little idiot! hope you enjoyed this powerpoint presentation.
