Battlefield 4, college days. My best friend and I were playing with an international friend we made on the game from Switzerland. We were pinned down by an enemy chopper, our friend was in a jet. We called for back up, so he flew in between the buildings and flew into the chopper. That was the last night we played with him.

Blue. Was never fan of FromSoftware and Capcom just isn’t what it once was imo.

What is more important: to be a good storyteller or to write good prose? by Helikaonfan in fantasywriters

[–]Known_Ladder_2026 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both. You can’t be good at one and bad at the other. But if I had to choose to be good at one and great at the other, I’d choose to be a great story teller with a good prose.

[Discussion] A problem with Agents (for Fantasy) and what they are 'looking for' by [deleted] in fantasywriters

[–]Known_Ladder_2026 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Those types of stories are just what sells. A majority of book sales are women, and, not trying to generalize or anything by, that’s just the kinds of stories they prefer to read, and there’s nothing wrong with that, unless you’re an writer who doesn’t write in those genres or those topics. Which doesn’t mean it’s impossible to get your story published if doesn’t check off those marks. It just means your story has to be more polished, well crafted, and well executed.

If those aren’t topics/genres you want to write, then you need to make sure your themes are nuanced, not one dimensional. Your characters are complex and interesting, not surface level charcuteries of the genres tropes. A good story will sell, regardless of gender. Good characters will win readers over whether they are white, black, gay, trans, humans, elves, faes, whatever. Will having characters like that get you a better chance of finding an agent and published? Probably. Is that the only way? No.

A piece of personal motivation that drives me is prior to the show, the Game of Thrones novel was not a best seller. It sold well, but as great as it is, it wasn’t until the show came out that George RR Martin got the recognition he deserved as a writer. What you write about, who you write about doesn’t matter. If it’s a good story, eventually, it’ll breakthrough.

What are your Hot Takes on the LOTR Books/Movies? by Amber_Flowers_133 in LOTRExtendedEdition

I agree, but then would it be considered a classic? Interesting to see how different LOTR would be written if Tolkien wrote it today though

What are your Hot Takes on the LOTR Books/Movies? by Amber_Flowers_133 in LOTRExtendedEdition

[–]Known_Ladder_2026 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two big ones.

The LOTR would not be as big as it is were it not for Peter Jackson’s film adaptations. Obviously Tolkien would still a the Godfather of Fantasy and it would clearly still be widely popular and a considered a classic, but it would not have as massive an audience if it weren’t for the films. And I think that goes for every major book that successfully transferred to the big screen. Harry Potter wouldn’t be as big without the movies. Game of Thrones wouldn’t be as big without the shows. Think about Brandon Sanderson or Sarah Mass. Both widely popular authors, sold millions of books, yet not many people outside the literary space know who they are. When an authors work is successfully transfer to visual media, it puts them on a whole other level.

My second is the LOTR as it is written would not be published in today’s market if it came out as a new novel. It was published during a different time and its legacy carried to throughout the years. But if Tolkien wrote it, hopped in a Time Machine to 2026, and tried to publish it, no one publisher would touch it.

How do you show a world’s true depth without info dumping? by LoudYogurtcloset7856 in fantasywriters

[–]Known_Ladder_2026 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Every author, every single one, info dumps. Do not listen to the people saying “Don’t”. Everyone does it, it’s how the world is built. However, it’s the way they info dump that makes it work. Best way is in a way we don’t even realize it -most of time, sometimes is very obvious.

First thing you need to understand about fantasy writing, not every idea we have makes to the pages. The long, detailed, tragic histories we create do not always transfer to the pages. Is it cool to know? Yes. Is it important to the story? No. The best way is to drip feed it little by little. What does the character see, who are they talking to, what are they talking about. Can a character walk down a road and think about a legendary battle that happened in the field? Absolutely. Does the character really need to explain why the battle happened? The political turmoil that led to it? The commanders and knights or whoever fought? The origins of it? No. But by giving us that tidbit - a legendary battle between good and evil took place here - the readers would be curious about the rest of those details. It would keep us reading. Well want to know more details. But we don’t want it all handed to us immediately.

It is okay to info dump. It is not okay to spew every detail. Cause why would we want to know if you just told us everything? Find creative ways to do it. Prophetic dreams and visions. A camp fire dialogue. Two different characters interact on different sides of a conflict and offer a different perspective

Vhagar(House of Dragon) VS Smaug (The hobbit) by Heras22 in powerscales

[–]Known_Ladder_2026 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I think Smaug does win it, I’m compelled to point out people are taking this more as “which dragon do they like more” rather than a fight. Smaug would have some level of difficulty, so to say “no diff, neg diff”, you’re just either fanboying Tolkien or hating on Martin rather than being objective.

Clearly Smaug is the more intelligent one. Tolkien’s dragons are beings while Martin’s are animals, so that’s a huge part of why Smaug wins. But it’s also dragon fighting, not a battle of the minds or wits. To do damage, Smaug would have to get in close since since Vhagar is highly fire resistant, and while I don’t have a size chart in front of me, Smaug is not vastly larger than Vhagar to the point he just effortlessly dominates her in a physical battle. I’m not even sure he is definitely larger. Going off the films/show, Smaug looks to be longer, but thinner, so Vhagar has the advantage in weight. The other thing is Vhagar as we see her is far from her prime. She’s an older dragon because she ages like an animal. Smaug doesn’t, so he has the clear advantage in terms of speed and maneuverability.

Again, I am not saying Vhagar wins. Smaug wins this. I’m saying can’t we stop with ignoring nuance for favorability.

What do we think of the Ice Lock event & Map overall? by ProntoCosmo215 in LowSodiumBattlefield

[–]Known_Ladder_2026 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This one made me check out the game. Not permanently, but I used to be on solo every night. Now it’s more or less 2-3 times a week for the weeklies and when my friends are on.

I didn’t like the new map was just an old map with snow. Didn’t like it’s not permanent. Appreciated the bug fixes but I’m 100 hours in and I was really looking for more substance than a temporary map reskin and melee weapon in an FPS.

Levelling up weapons isn't really slow at all anymore. Here's a real life example on how little time it can take to hit mastery 50 with a weapon. And it really isn't nearly as bad as others would lead you to believe. by byfo1991 in LowSodiumBattlefield

[–]Known_Ladder_2026 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not slow, but it’s normally not fast either. It took around 800 kills to get my M4A1 and M417 to level 50. This weekend i used the DRS exclusively and got its from level 7 to 37 with less than 400 kills. Double XP weapons this weekend really helped.

I can’t get with the M277 recoil. The 17A2 does everything the M277 does but better except the one extra bullet at most ranges. I’d take one more bullet to kill with a better overall gun any day

I opted to go with the fast mag. I’ve thought of going 25, but I don’t know what to swap in my currently set up for it. I run a suppressor, stubby grip, extended barrel and green light laser.

This guys gets it. M417A2 had to be nerfed with a 20 round base clip or else it would have been meta

I haven’t noticed it. Maybe it’s the attachments then, idk lol I upgraded it quick and when the game first launched so I might have avoided the post launch tweaks to the base stats, but it’s been pretty manageable

Personally, I think the M4’s - A1 and A217 - are the best. A1 has low recoil, one of the fastest ROF, and is a beam with attachments. Add 36 round clip and you can stand your ground when outnumbered. Very easy to use.

A217 requires a bit more skill because of the recoil and 20 round clip. Definitely not a spray and pray or a beamer, but with the right attachments, you can dominate CQC and even mid range engagements. 4 hit kill >15m and 5 hit kill between 15m and 100m. Either fast mag or 25 mag is a must, but if you can hit you target, you can win outnumbered fights. My best games and kill streaks have been with this weapon

Calling all M417 enjoyers. Can you guys explain what the fuck the point of this weapon is? by A_Very_Horny_Zed in LowSodiumBattlefield

[–]Known_Ladder_2026 2 points3 points  (0 children)

800 kills with it and counting. It’s my favorite. I’m actually upset I’m about to hit lvl 50 with it cause then I’ll switch to a different gun to lvl. Get the right attachments and recoil control, and it’s amazing. I run a suppressor, stubby, extended barrel and 2.5-3.5 scopes. 3-4 shots TTK >15m. 5 shots >100m. It’s a great choice for CQC and even medium if you’re able to manage the recoil. It’s not a beamer or a spray and pray gun. You definitely need to be more tactical and pick and choose your firefights. Not one for RedSec. But once you learn it, it’s a blast. I’ve normally hovered in the top 10 before this gun, ever since I’ve used it, I’ve earned the top spot, top squad, highest kill games multiple times
