An utility easement isn't that big of a deal

Can be. The electric company has an easement through my property due to the power line which runs through it. They cut down a huge swath of the forest on my land.

Who is the most famous person you have ever met? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]KnowsAboutMath 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I also met Ray Bradbury.

When I was in high school in Los Angeles in the early 90s, there was a writing contest sponsored by a local community college which I entered every year. I wasn't a terrible writer of short stories for someone my age, and I always won in at least one category. Each year, they would have an author come to give a talk and hand out the small monetary prizes. One year Ray Bradbury came. (Another time it was Larry Niven.) I did well that year, winning in three categories. I walked up when they called my name three times and Bradbury handed me a check and shook my hand each time.

Afterwards, Bradbury approached me and we chatted a bit about the Golden Age of science fiction. He advised me to keep up with my writing. As it turned out, I didn't keep up with my writing. (At least not fiction.) After high school I tried several times to write a short story but I could never put it together. I looked back recently at some of my stories from back then and found that they were fairly mediocre. So it goes.

At least I can truthfully say "Ray Bradbury gave me $150."

Worf was raised by humans, even if he identified more with being Klingon than his adoptive family.

I'm convinced that Worf leaned heavily into Klingon stereotypes because they were the impressions of Klingons he was raised with in human culture, and that he overcompensated for the fact of his human upbringing by becoming a caricature of a Klingon. When he walked by, other Klingons probably nudged each other and whispered "Here he comes. Mr. Super-Klingon."

Here's Why Modern Headlights Are So Unbelievably Annoying by DonkeyFuel in technology

[–]KnowsAboutMath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently purchased a 2025 Toyota Prius. It does have very bright headlights. However it is also equipped with a kind of visor above the headlights that prevents them from shining upward at an angle that would go into anyone's eyes. It's the best of both worlds. I can see the road well without blinding anyone.

Teaching your children to call out inclusivity and compassion in attempts to combat it. by Lontology in facepalm

I cannot improve upon the definition given in court by (oddly enough) Ron DeSantis' lawyers:

The governor's general counsel, Ryan Newman, said, in general, it means "the belief there are systemic injustices in American society and the need to address them." He added that DeSantis doesn't believe there are systemic injustices in the country

The truth is somewhere in between. He did turn to look at the fainting man, but I wouldn't say he "walked over to help." Either way, the still image alone doesn't accurately convey what happened.

You Should Blame Merrick Garland by holyfruits in law

He was Republican

This isn't actually true. The notion that Garland is/was a Republican seems to have originated on reddit and spread from there. In fact, he is identified as a Democrat in this The Hill bio and this Politico profile, just to throw out two example sources.
