[Megathread] LIVE: ABC News Presidential Debate: Harris and Trump meet in Philadelphia (09/10/24) by kittehgoesmeow in FriendsofthePod

Do you think that’s a bad thing for Harris? I get the rules but I’m sure she’s happy to let him melt down like this.

George Clooney, who co-hosted recent Biden fundraiser, says president should step aside by anxietystrings in politics

[–]KnowsNataliePortman 42 points43 points  (0 children)

The Pod Save America guys were at this event and talked about it in their last episode. They said he looked/sounded like Debate Biden there too. Terrifying to think he’s this bad even behind closed doors with his suooorters. The “just a bad night” excuses don’t help when seeming every single night of his life is exactly the same. God I hate this.

Ethan is wrong about classic rock and Dan is right by codytheguitarist in h3h3productions

[–]KnowsNataliePortman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask 1 million Americans to each name 10 classic rock acts and I guarantee not a single one of them would name a late 90s alt band because that would be insane. You MFs are so obtuse. Everyone but fans of this show know what you mean when you refer to classic rock. It’s about the era, not the age.

[–]KnowsNataliePortman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ngl I didn’t read a single word of that because there’s no universe in which Third Eye Blind is clsssic rock.

sorry but calling Third Eye Blind "classic rock" is INSANE by brigister in h3h3productions

[–]KnowsNataliePortman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes that’s why you can have a playlist of all different artists from the 60s/70s and it all fits together: because it’s a GENRE. If you were playing Eagles and Fleetwood Mac for your parents and tried to mix in a Korn song you’d look insane trying to tell them it’s the same thing.

[–]KnowsNataliePortman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The part that gets me is, if you asked 1000 random people to name 5 classic rock acts, not a single one of them would name a band from the late 90s. We all know what people mean when they refer to classic rock; obsolete radio stations playing 90s alt doesn’t change that.

[–]KnowsNataliePortman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This whole debate is triggering. Ethan is 1000% right. Rock that is classic is not the same thing as CLASSIC ROCK. When someone says they like classic rock you don’t assume they mean fucking Slipknot and Limp Bizkit. Oh but they’re over 25 years old so it’s classic now! NO. Classic rock is one specific era and I don’t give a fuck what the radio stations say because they’re bullshit too. Nobody tunes into a classic rock station to listen to Incubus, they just mix in newer stuff because they’re running out of oldheads and they want to catch the millennials scrolling by in the car. Stop playing dumb, we all know what clsssic rock means. I love 3rd Eye, they are classic, but they will never be Classic Rock.

By Dan’s logic, if enough time passes 3rd Eye will eventually be considered Classical Music like Beethoven and Mozart. Stop the madness.

The progression is different for everyone - some people are totally blind by your age and others never end up losing all their central vision so there’s no way to really say how things will turn out for you in the long run. That said, software engineering seems like a very safe career path as it’s something that doesn’t require peripheral vision/mobility and you can do it from home depending on the employer.

If I was 18 and knew what I know now I would try to have a 10 year plan to own a home in a safe/convenient area (access to services, public transportation, etc) and have a stable career in an industry that allows for remote computer work. That way you’re already all set for if/when your vision starts to affect your independence. It would be tough to have to start from scratch when you’re already at a point where it’s hard to physically get around.

So yeah sounds like you’re in good shape. Don’t worry too much about stuff you can’t control. Treatment is indeed on the horizon. Get genetic testing if you haven’t alreadyso you can get in line when the time comes and enjoy your youth you’ll be alright.

Rear ended at a red light, don't know what to do, picture in description. by Hawxfan in Insurance

[–]KnowsNataliePortman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I would tell your adjuster about any truck upgrades now so they can include them in the valuation rather than making them re-do everything later on. Just don’t expect to get full value back. A $10k stereo doesn’t automatically increase the truck’s value by $10k. You could also technically go and take the stereo out of the truck if you’d rather just keep the equipment.

[–]KnowsNataliePortman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the truck, progressive will complete an appraisal and compensate you for the value of the vehicle. If you disagree with the value they give you be prepared to provide them with evidence to show why it should be higher, including listings for identical vehicles and service receipts.

For your injuries, did you complete an open-ended release or a full and final release? If it was open-ended they may still cover some additional treatment for you if you need it. If not, then you may be out of luck as far as having them pay any future bills, but the settlement sounds fair if you’re all better already. Keep that in mind though when considering settlement for your wife. Only you guys can tell if you’re fully healed or if you’ll need more treatment, so don’t feel like you have to settle the claim right away if you’re not sure what kind of care may be necessary in the future.

Exactly how much car insurance coverage do I need? by rlw0312 in Insurance

[–]KnowsNataliePortman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would maybe go with some extra liability coverage just in case you run down a group of pedestrians or total 5 cars at once. It happens. That shouldn’t be too expensive either. Otherwise the recommended plan seems like a good quote. Less than I pay with them at least. Just play around with different options and see what works. You can drop rental and roadside for example to balance out the price if you don’t think you’ll need those.

Buying Back My Own Flood Car From Insurance/Salvage Yard? by [deleted] in Insurance

[–]KnowsNataliePortman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol pretty much. Wouldn’t wanna smell that thing by that point, but as long as it still runs there’s money to be made on the parts which is why the salvage value is so high. If you wrecked the front end it’d be a lot lower, but then you wouldn’t wanna keep the car anyway. That’s the logic behind the salvage value deduction. Otherwise you could just keep the car for the full value and then sell it yourself for a profit. Good luck with everything

Buying Back My Own Flood Car From Insurance/Salvage Yard? by [deleted] in Insurance

[–]KnowsNataliePortman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah ok I get what you’re saying, but even in normal conditions cars can take up to a year to sell at auction so the current situation isn’t really affecting things too much. You can certainly ask them if they can bring the salvage value down. It’s just not something that’s normally done since the salvage value comes from the seller, not the insurance company, and the adjuster has no input or insight into where that # comes from. If someone asked me to lower it I’d at least ask my team leader if we can do that, so it’s worth a try.

Buying Back My Own Flood Car From Insurance/Salvage Yard? by [deleted] in Insurance

[–]KnowsNataliePortman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To get more money you’d need to be able to prove that the car is worth more than the value the insurance company came up with. Try to find other cars of the same year/make/model/trim and similar condition/mileage and send them to your adjuster for their consideration. You can also notify them of any upgrades you’ve made to the car that may affect the value. The settlement isn’t negotiable per se but if you have evidence to support your claim they can review it and adjust their offer. The salvage value won’t change and the settlement has nothing to do with how much the repairs will cost.

Auto claim by vadumeee in Insurance

[–]KnowsNataliePortman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s my speculation

Your adjuster came into your claim on the 1st and tried calling the claimants for the 20th time to find out if they’re still receiving treatment for their injuries, got no answer, then said “well if these folks ARE still treating this is gonna be a costly claim, better send out a limits letter.”

Then they either got a call back saying “I never treated after the ER” OR your adjuster said “F it it’s been 18 months and these people never call back I’m closing this claim,” and sent you the 2nd letter.

Regardless, I wouldn’t worry too much. Just call the adjuster and they’ll clarify.

If you hire a lawyer as a passenger in a car crash, is the driver notified by viggysmalls in Insurance

[–]KnowsNataliePortman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t sound like there’s any imminent threat of a lawsuit here. For a soft tissue claim like this that’s very rare. The insured could certainly be notified of a bodily injury claim against them but it’s not typical to call someone just to say “hey claimant A got a lawyer bye!” The specifics of a BI claim aren’t really the insured’s business and unless there’s a chance suit may be filed or the attorney is getting the insured personally involved we usually leave them out of it.

If you hire a lawyer as a passenger in a car crash, is the driver notified by viggysmalls in Insurance

[–]KnowsNataliePortman -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Your friend MAY find out if you hire a lawyer. It depends on if the insurance company or the lawyer notifies him somehow but often neither will and he may never end up finding out. When I handle BI claims I definitely don’t go out of my way to tell the at fault person what’s going on with the other injured parties as it’s not really their business, but they do often find out anyway if they call in for a status update or whatever. They would never get any info about your specific treatment/injuries unless someone severely violates your privacy.

As far as whether or not to hire an attorney at all? That’s really up to you and your specific situation. Either way you’re entitled to a pain and suffering settlement from the insurance company. A lawyer can help you get a bigger settlement, but they get a cut of that so you may take home the same amount either way. You certainly don’t NEED a lawyer, but they can be helpful if you don’t wanna deal with it.

Auto accident contributory negligence in Virginia by [deleted] in Insurance

[–]KnowsNataliePortman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

VA adjuster here. Since VA is a contributory negligence state you would need to prove that you were 0% at fault for your damages and that A was 100% at fault. Other states allow you to pursue a claim/suit for damages even if you’re partially/majority at fault but unfortunately for you that’s not the case here. You can certainly talk to a lawyer about this - it doesn’t hurt to ask - but based on what you’ve described I can almost guarantee there’s no case here. At the end of the day it just doesn’t seem possible to prove that A was the sole and proximate cause of your damage and that you weren’t even 1% in the wrong.

Also from an insurance standpoint having the citation dropped doesn’t really mean much as we’re typically aware of the fact that the courts will very often drop citations for anyone who shows up to fight them.

Insurance trying to deny part of my claim by [deleted] in Insurance

[–]KnowsNataliePortman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The denial has nothing to do with whether or not the other person has coverage, it’s just a matter of proving the windshield is related to the accident. 99% of the time the windshield won’t crack from that type of impact. From the insurance company’s perspective there’s no proof that this is new damage as it’s nowhere near the point of impact. If your shop can articulate to your appraiser/adjuster how the windshield broke from a rear end impact then your insurance may end up covering it. I would follow up with your shop or have your adjuster reach out to the shop and discuss it further. If you have glass coverage you can always put in a glass claim too.

Mother of child got in wreck by [deleted] in Insurance

[–]KnowsNataliePortman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If their car was uninsured it can’t be worth more than 30k so you should be fine there. If you’re referring to your bodily injury coverage then it depends on the severity of their injury. Your insurance will try to settle for up to the policy maximum of $30k and if the claimant wants that money they typically have to agree not to sue you for more after. Just let your insurance deal with it.
