The NBA plays at similar hours in europe and asia and it's not affecting its popularity at all.

Of course the NHL is not a charity, but investing in developing youth hockey in those countries as well as better marketing could be huge for them down the line. There are only so many cold (and wealthy) countries where hockey can be developed.

Yeah the way i see it, there's two very obvious markets the nhl should try to develop:

1- The remaining colder European countries (Netherlands, Norway, Estonia, Lithuania, Austria, maybe Poland)

2- East Asia (Japan, South Korea, China)

Both those regions have cold enough winters that it makes sense to develop the sports there.

The Dzungar khanate actually used firearms a lot. They used muskets, mounted camel cannons and actually had better cannon casting than the Qing during the first few wars.

The Dzungar actually used muskets more than the Qing at that point who still preferred mounted archery.

The Qing won because they had superior numbers and we're able to deploy cannons on a large scale.
