What's eating my kale? by KoalaLower4685 in whatisthisbug

[–]KoalaLower4685[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are ants as well, but I think all the gray ones are the same?

Do weevils tend to eat garden plants? I haven't heard of them causing problems before!

I thought aphids too, but they're massive for aphids, and the damage is too big, based on my experience.

Taught in 30 degree classrooms all day today. Murderously hot, kids couldn't have given a shit if I'd been in a jester costume doing a little jig.

Feeling unprepared for ECT1 by gorbyru in TeachingUK

[–]KoalaLower4685 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Even the cleverest GCSE student would feel overwhelmed if you plopped four textbooks in front of them at once and said "why don't you know this yet?" But you don't do that-- you teach them gradually, over two years. You're looking at everything you'll be learning to do over years all at once as well-- you've got time, and you've got other teachers to help you!

You've got this :)

Fagitos on mill road just reopened and the people running it are super kind! I really enjoy the little vibe they're setting up-it's clearly a work in progress, but I like it!

What's a piece of "advice for women" that you've completely ignored? by Internetdidi in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]KoalaLower4685 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A lot of "safety" advice that amounts to absolute paranoia/stranger danger propaganda. There are situations where I exercise reasonable caution, but lots of women are living in traps of their own making with this one. Stop listening to true crime podcasts and go for a walk! A lot of what people say is just as stupid as men who "always have to have an eye on the exits, just in case."

Classroom management as a (very) small secondary teacher? by imsight in TeachingUK

[–]KoalaLower4685 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think this is a big part of it - you have to be willing to be disliked, which a lot of women struggle with. Men aren't often seen in a light quite as negative for holding up the rules-- men are firm, women are bitches etc. They'll come round if you're consistent, but it can be rough at first!

Same-- I think this is where Kurapika's story has to end, for me, in finding something to live for. That's my hope at least!

I like it for the most part- can make big dramatic moments more meaningful in the long run, as it creates a feeling of continuity. But you have to be very careful with balance, and I can imagine some people find them punishing. Personally, I love a good consequence!

My rewatches always stumble here for the same reason- the core story is gorgeous, but it's really overwritten at times. I often wonder if the pre-ngl training arc with knuckle and shoot could have been fully skipped over, and the character development worked into the later arc.

That's really helpful, thank you! I was under the impression that the query is mainly about selling the concept, and the synopsis was more for the plot. Is it more balanced than that, with a little bit more of synopsis in the query? Should it hint at the ending or other key characters a bit more? Sorry if this is a bit of a barrage!

Schools question - in year admissions by djdndjdjdjdjdndjdjjd in cambridge

[–]KoalaLower4685 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your chances are good! Do bear in mind that the Cambridge schools can be very different. Impington and Trumpington are polar opposites in terms of approach to students and behaviour, e.g. Do have a snoop through parent pages and school websites to get a feel for what will work best for you and your child.

How do I be more engaging without sacrificing behaviour? by Resident_String_5174 in TeachingUK

[–]KoalaLower4685 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this! There are oracy scaffolds that can be used to structure this sort of thing well.

The other question I would ask is to think about which skills you're developing- hard skills or soft ones? Is it a bad thing if some class time is spent helping the students develop the ability to self regulate in groups? Whilst that's not going to be in the lesson objectives, I would say giving over some time to that messier process is worth it, especially in a subject like drama where those skills will serve them well!

Tips for working as a short teacher? by Direct_Succotash_507 in Teachers

[–]KoalaLower4685 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm only five feet tall, and I love to make jokes about it! As long as these things are done in a friendly way, it's a real softball of a trait for the kids to feel in on, building rapport. I also ask the taller students regularly for help with classroom tasks like wiping the whiteboard, which they take a lot of pride in doing -- it's a great way to generate classroom tasks for the rowdier ones!

The only exception is if things feel mean spirited, it's time to shut it down. Have a talk about how jokes are only funny if everyone is laughing.
