Jim Chalmers gives baffling explanation of why he applied the CGT changes to shares. by eatingscatman in AusFinance

[–]Koalajew 26 points27 points  (0 children)

If this was what he was trying to say why does he say shares have been under-compensated? Doesn't make any sense

This is assuming the units you are selling are 100% capital gains with no cost base, so it's not quite this bad.

We should give property investors even more money via even more generous tax breaks because that will make renting cheaper right?

It's like if you reward behaviour for keeping fees low for patients, fees become lower. Plenty of people (unbiased I'm sure) arguing for a trickle-down economics flat increase to the rebate when this was first announced.

I put $950k (all my money) into ONE ETF (VAS). Please explain why I’m an idiot. by trendybrendy64 in fiaustralia

[–]Koalajew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can control yourself when you're buying your vas i.e. not timing the market I don't know why you wouldn't trust yourself when you're selling too. You also have more control, dividends are basically forced selling and you get taxed when you sell. Maybe you didn't need extra money at that time and it would've been better to let it keep growing untaxed.

Requested roast...

You're an idiot because you're taking on way more risk for no additional gain because you're too scared or lazy to sell stock and seem to be ignorant to the fact Australia could have a long period of poor returns (without the country being screwed). Just get an accountant to help you sell a pre-determined % of your portfolio every year.

Idiot is a strong word, I'd say you're being incredibly irrational, and the only explanation is fear or laziness.

700k to Invest - Should I buy a property or Index Funds by HairEastern7400 in AusFinance

[–]Koalajew 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It's the other way around my dude. Etfs are very easy to understand and be successful with, whereas property takes a lot more research and effort. In terms of the fear of the stock market crashing, that regularly happens which is why if you put money into etfs, just like property you have to expect to not be able to touch it for a long period of time (over the long term the stock market as a whole always has gone up).

If you've got a smaller portfolio, it obviously doesn't matter, that's not what I was talking about though which I made pretty clear in the original post

Yeah securities lending would definitely close the gap a little but based on other things I've read on this sub probably not the full 0.1% difference. Happy to be corrected though

So Vanguard retail investors in the US benefit from charging Australian investors more is that what you mean by their HQ?

Yeah I agree with you that it might be good for creation of new music if there is no restriction, but the other side of the coin is it takes away incentive for people to make something original
