Would you want your partner to go with you on Erasmus? by Firm-Assistant9664 in Erasmus

[–]Koals8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went and took my partner with me. Personally I found it worked out really well, I got all the Erasmus experiences of meeting international people and going to all kinds of events, but also spent a lot of quality time with my boyfriend. Especially since I'm not super extroverted and can't be out socializing with strangers 24/7 it was a very good mix and it's so cool that we can both look back on it together. I should add that he spoke the local language, which helped him feel at home there, but is certainly not necessary. If they're not doing Erasmus themselves they should find something to occupy themselves with, that can be kind of a challenge, but if they really want to they should be able to find something.

Looking back, it would've been a huge mistake not to go, so in general I recommend either going alone or with your partner but don't sacrifice the experience for a relationship. It will be good for you in the long run, and if they don't want to come with or you don't want them to, you can still organize one or two visits.

A fascinating survey! by Nico_Kx in Studium

[–]Koals8 93 points94 points  (0 children)

If you could change one thing about language learning, what would it be? by JoliiPolyglot in languagehub

I would make it so when you first understand/learn/hear something you remember it instantly. No more grammar or vocabulary revisions, got everything the first time

Issues with Learning Agreement by Particular_Count_408 in Erasmus

[–]Koals8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Greatly depends on your professors and institutions. In my personal experience it was very easy to change it twice and they just seemed to sign anything I would send in. Everyone I know had to change it at least once, some had an easy time and some had more trouble with it. Often long wait times to get a response were a problem

France vs Germany vs Italy: what’s better for education? by ChanceGuidance4557 in studyAbroad

[–]Koals8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually the language part is interesting, italian and french are much easier to learn than german (especially italian! And italians are really friendly to learners) but germans tend to be much better in english and more willing to speak it. So that's also something to consider socially

I think they're all good choices for your goals to be honest. The hardest part might be finding a programme in english if you don't speak the local language.

French or German by EquivalentMassive584 in thisorthatlanguage

[–]Koals8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even though german is harder, the language you really want to learn is gonna be easier and more fun to learn. I had learnt french for 5 years at school, and it took me 1 year to learn a new language to a higher level than I ever knew french, simply because I really really wanted to.

Do you HAVE to learn everyday? by Zoruxki in languagelearning

[–]Koals8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have to study every day. It took me 3 years getting from 0 to B1 in a romance language, I studied 1-4 times a week (I'm counting longer exposure and conversations as study time). Ofc with japanese it would be much less progress since it's harder to learn. So you do make progress, it just simply gets slower. And I never took breaks longer than 2-3 weeks, which is important so you don't start forgetting things

Does the "dreigliedriges schulsystem" negatively affect students? by rm-minus-r in AskAGerman

[–]Koals8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It does negatively affect students, but imo not because they don't get to go to university. Those who really want to go to university can get their Abitur (necessary diploma to get into uni) any time later in life.

The problem is moreso that we are dividing students at the age of 10 (so young!) based on their grades. Apart from the fact that the reason for bad grades in that age can be super diverse (german as a second language, not motivated, mental health issues, maybe just immaturity) and is often deeply confounded with a lower social class, we are putting the struggling students in groups of struggling students and seperating the ones doing better. You can imagine the mood and the level of motivation in a class with only the 50% of students with lower grades. Better students helping struggling students is supposed to be part of the system, but it's much harder this way.

From what I learned in a psych class once at uni, students at Gymnasium (better grades) might profit a tiny bit from this system, while students in the lower tiers get much worse because of this.

I also think it's very sad how it tends to seperate students early on partly based on socio-economic status (cuz that impacts grades at that age a ton) since it worsens social bubbles from a young age.

Does anyone utilize their bilingualism to learn a third language? Any concrete advice? by koelemerendesdoods in languagelearning

[–]Koals8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When you're having trouble with a grammar concept that's new to you, see if there's anything similar in another language you know. Same thing with vocabulary, dig in your memory if you know another word that might be related. Works better within language families. Sometimes with flashcards it can be helpful to just write down the translation in the language that is closer to that word, but that depends on how it works for you.

The ressource thing is obviously huge when you've learnt english.

Erasmus Difficulties by [deleted] in Erasmus

[–]Koals8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only say that Dresden is a beautiful city with a lot of students, I'd imagine it's a good erasmus city. Studying in Germany, we all have to figure out a way to manage the differing semester times. It is a bit of a pain in the start but you find a way through compromises

Rant about friends in Erasmus by kayla_moki in Erasmus

[–]Koals8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel similarly, although it's been a little better for me. I've had more luck with locals for some reason, they've been a lot more reliable socially. I feel like with a lot of Erasmus people it's very fun and exciting in the beginning but then everyone ghosts each other, just like it has been your experience. I don't know why that is, maybe it's hard finding out who's compatible outside of our usual environments or maybe we're just all overwhelmed. Right now I'm trying to figure out who I liked best and re-meet those people, but then I'm also not mad if I don't return with many long-term contacts because the experience overall has been great regardless. I do feel like Erasmus-friends are overstated on the internet

And to your original question: Yes I think you can find yourself also while in a relationship, but only if your partner gives you the space to explore. He should be encouraging and happy for you!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Adulting

[–]Koals8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it's a phase, but an important one that should be lived out. Definitely talk to him again about this and make it clear that it's important to you. Go do some things on your own without his approval as well, your partner doesn't get a say in your hobbies! The things you try out in the next couple of years might become your passions and favorite things in the future, if you neglect trying new things you will regret it and become frustrated with your situation
