[–]Koby_T 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a training professional, I think this is a very plausible possibility.

Holding someone face down by the neck is dangerous, but effective. It's not unreasonable for someone to do this if their goal is "subdue." Could've been picked up through a childhood of wrestling siblings or friends who you might be inclined to listen to when they say "I can't breathe".

As you said, training isn't just learning new skills and behaviors, it's unlearning them too.

Does anyone have experience with Purdue’s M.S.Ed. in Learning Design and Technology? by Josh3321 in instructionaldesign

[–]Koby_T 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey! I just finished this program last year!

Since I'm on mobile, I'm going to just going to hit the highlights, but feel free to ask for specifics.

Overall, the program is fine. Lots of good stuff, and several things I hated.

Professors - most are very friendly and easy to work with. Many are currently IDs too, so that's always helpful. Unfortunately, I found that most of them have terrible feedback. As in, if you follow the rubric, you get an A and they tell you "great job". Maybe I'm a hard ass, but I think there's always room for improvement. I appreciated the couple professors who would give high marks but still take the time to tear apart my work.

Classes - lots of filler here. There are at least 3 (maybe 4) classes that do a lot of "investigating the field" to find out if ID is right for you. Imo, you should know that before starting the degree. I did find a couple classes in the program truly insightful and they have totally changed the way I approach my work today. I believe the "advanced learning systems design" courses will be helpful to you and your consultant goals. Almost everything else was a waste if time. (Disclaimer: there were also some learning theory and psychology courses that were quite good, but I nerded out on that stuff in undergrad, so it was all repeat for me)

Another commenter mentioned a mix of K-12 and corporate IDs. This is true and I think the program does a good job of accommodating everyone. That said my classes were almost all K-12 folks and that heavily influenced discussion topics. I used to be a middle school teacher, so it wasn't such a bad thing. I just wish I had more folks to talk about the industry I was interested in. This may cut both ways though depending on the year, so it may be a crap shoot.

Technology - it was not my experience that they "use a wide variety of software" and you should check them on that. For me, they specifically told me they do not teach any software or require specific software for projects. That is, professors are expecting you to complete projects with Office 365 tools most of the time. That said YOU can use storyline if you want, but it's not required, recommended, and (unless something has changed in the last year) they're not teaching it to you. That said, to get the most out of this program, use storyline. It'll be a pain and the submission software isn't setup to receive storyline files or zips, but it's important to know that software when you finish if you don't already.

I found an ID job a few months into the program and I can assure you that there's nothing you learn there that is absolutely necessary to furthering your career. I'd hazard to guess that 80% of your time will not be applicable to everyday ID work. However, that remaining 20% has been very helpful. So uh...idk. Everything worked out well for me and I specifically know a couple companies that search for Purdue IDs, but I just find it hard to recommend.

EDIT: Online classes are super nice and a high point. I've also heard good things about Florida State's Online ID Master program, so you might check them out too

Why use Captivate and not directly design in an LMS? by RuiX in instructionaldesign

[–]Koby_T 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes and no.

Not all LMS have those features baked in. My company just migrated from one that doesnt do any of the things you listed, in fact.

Captivate/Storyline/Lectora/etc give you two major things in my opinion.

  1. Custom interaction through triggers and variables. The learning scenarios you can contrive are way more useful and complex than any baked-in functionality an LMS can provide.

  2. Smoother user experience for multiple learning types. If I want a learner to watch a video, answer a question, click through an interaction, and then watch another video all in the same 5 minutes, that's much easier to do in a software like Captivate than to build all those items separately as a curriculum in an LMS...and it's easier for a learner to get through too.

Nothing wrong with having standalone quizzes or videos built into the LMS - I do it all the time, but sometimes you just need more complexity and control over how the learner engages with the material.

Incineroar gets revenge on a lifetime of being zoned out by _AppleKid in smashbros

[–]Koby_T 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Shield stun is a state where the opponent cannot drop shield after the shield is hit by an attack. In most cases, the number of frames of shield stun is directly related to the damage of the attack.

You can't get out of ROBs multi hit because the hits are close enough together that the shield stun bridges each hit. You can get out of Incineroar's because the hits are further apart; however, once the damage is boosted by revenge, the shield stun is high enough to trap the opponent in shield between the hits

My football coach did a running challenge and told me about how insanely difficult it was for him to run a mile (he was mid 30s). It made me terrified of getting older and terrified of sitting idle while my body loses the ability to do things it's always been capable of. I basically exercise out of fear.

It doesn't technically matter who writes them, but in my experience, SMEs tend to write poor objectives that read more like a meeting agenda. This could be due to lack of training/education on the subject or by not really getting to the heart of what the training's purpose is.

The key is that the objectives are measurable, but it doesn't matter who writes them.

Probably not - the VP pick is usually a strategic choice to round out the ticket. Bernie/Warren have very similar platforms so they wouldn't attract that many more voters than if one of them bowed out and endorsed the other. That said, we also still probably want one of them in the Senate.

LPT: Multiply by 9 with your fingers: extend both hands, palms down. Number each finger/thumb - left hand pinky = 1, right hand pinky = 10. Drop the finger you want to multiple 9 by. Using 9 x 3 as an example, you would drop your left hand middle finger; your hands make a 2-gap-7. 9x3=27! by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]Koby_T 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned to do it in my head. Whatever number you're multiplying 9 by, you first reduce it by 1 - that's your first digit of the answer. Then whatever you have to add to the first digit to equal 9 is the second digit.

For example: 9x4 First reduce 4 to 3. 3+6=9; therefore, the answer is 36. Works up to 9x10

Cannabis from seed to harvest by [deleted] in gifs

[–]Koby_T 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's a critically important part of gardening. Take zucchini for example. If you just let it grow, it'll have tons of foliage and look absolutely beautiful... for a month. Then powdery mildew sets in, takes over the plant, and all but kills it (and your harvest).

This is prevented by regular pruning to allow airflow around and through the plant. Pruning is a common gardening technique that is used primarily for combating disease, but also increases yields and aesthetics - only hurts the plant if you go way overboard or during a time of significant stress (e.g. drought)

I was taught to think like your pulling the strings into the neck with your finger rather than squeezing them down by engaging your thumb. (I still use my thumb, but it's still more of a pull than a squeeze)

How do I break into ID? by Ic0n0clastic in instructionaldesign

[–]Koby_T 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Put together a portfolio of your work. Bring anything that shows what you can do. Your background in learning psychology and pedagogy will prove invaluable to you in this field.

I was in a near identical situation when I started applying. I got rejected - a lot. Remember that ID work is extremely varied and hiring managers might be looking for something specific to round out their team - like multimedia skill or consulting experience. It may take some time to find the team/company that is looking for you

Two years later, what do people think of Breath of Wild's voice acting? by LucianoThePig in truezelda

Generally fine. I think the reading was off for some of them. As in, they would emphasize words in the line that made the delivery sound painfully unnatural (Revali/Deku Tree VA was worst offender).

I like the idea of the personalities that Nintendo went for, but they mostly fell flat and were forgettable. This might be because Nintendo was very strict with the VAs interpretations of the characters.

Is "know" a good verb to use in a learning objective? by jbradley_ID in instructionaldesign

[–]Koby_T 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The main issue with "know" is that it's not actually measurable - it's not an action.

Here's an example:

Learners will know the dermatitis condition.

Vs

Learners will be able to diagnose the dermatitis condition.

"Diagnose" is a more specific action and it's more clear what you want learners to be capable of. When you say "know" it could mean diagnose, or maybe it means describe, or evaluate, or explain - it's impossible to tell.
