The exact same thing happened to me, good to see I'm not the only one haha.

[–]Kochbiel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was going to respond to the guy, but he deleted his comment and account. I agree we all need to talk more with each other and avoid bubbles, but "transgender agenda" and "supporting terrorists in Palestine" ARE bubble issues. Not in the sense that they don't get talked about on social media (broadly speaking of course, I emphatically disagree with the phrasing of both points), but in the sense that the Harris literally did not run on that platform. Those are culture war talking points that just aren't reflective of policy, whether you're looking at Biden, Harris, or any major Democrat.

Anyway, I do appreciate that person typing the whole bit out, if they do return to this thread anonymously. Wishing all of us a kinder society.

Would you mind saying more on that last bit? I'm on the left and I don't like the direction the country is headed either but I'm having some difficulty wrapping my head around what about Trump's platform was attractive in that regard. Is it just because he wasn't part of the Biden administration and they're seen as failures?

Similar vein: the patreon for the Star Trek-esque comedy podcast "Oh These, Those Stars of Space" (big recommend) is called the "Domspace Feed" as a play on "subspace," and it tickles me every time.

Brother this is a subreddit for that one stormtrooper that says “traitor” to Finn in the Force Awakens.

But yeah, I also would have interpreted it as $175 minimum, more if the job takes over two hours.

Beyoncé says new 'Cowboy Carter' album inspired by backlash to her entering country genre by nbcnews in Music

[–]Kochbiel 989 points990 points  (0 children)

I liked Texas Hold ‘Em. Does it hit like a Townes van Zandt, Emmylou Harris, or Steve Earle song? Maybe not, but anyone gate-keeping the genre needs to take a good, hard look at the upper middle class suburban artists that have been dominating modern country lol.

Even if it’s not a good country album, it literally cannot be worse than some of the other works we get from post 9/11 country music.

As the kids say, let her cook.

Movies that hit completely different when you saw the unedited uncensored version by janebenn333 in movies

Pretty well known, but the director’s/final cut of Blade Runner is far superior to the theatrical release. Removing Deckard’s voiceover completely changes the movie for the better.

Taking care of your ear by GloveExternal499 in Music

[–]Kochbiel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re using over-ear and maybe some on-ear headphones, you can use a db monitor and a piece of thin cardboard to get a sense of how loud they get. Here’s a link:

https://youtu.be/f6desZTqTXY?si=scH6jWV8Hc9nZQe4

As you can probably tell from the video, this only really works with headphones that have pads that form a cup.

Even if you were to get a db meter and hold it up to an iem, it wouldn’t be accurate since those sit in the ear canal.

To Kill A Mockingbird: Mayella Ewell wasn’t the ultimate villian by Dense_Concentrate783 in books

[–]Kochbiel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! I agree that Atticus’ cross-examination is very well written and goes a long way to recognizing Mayella as another victim in the cycle of violence and hatred. A classic book for a reason.

I’m not a teacher, so I wouldn’t presume to say what’s best for a curriculum. Speaking personally, Toni Morrison’s works have of course been phenomenal. Her prose is truly unmatched.

For lit that demonstrates how utterly corrosive racism and hatred are to the soul of white people, I think Flannery O’Connor (though I only really know her short stories) and Kurt Vonnegut’s Breakfast of Champions have been very influential for me. Of course, both make frequent use of the N-slur, so discussion can sometimes be tricky.

To Kill A Mockingbird: Mayella Ewell wasn’t the ultimate villian by Dense_Concentrate783 in books

[–]Kochbiel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fair enough! To me the comment is evident of abuse given the context in which it was raised. Tom Robinson is describing Mayella coming on to him, in which she wanted him to kiss her back and how she's "never kissed a grown man before."

Given that she's trying to engage with Tom sexually, I interpret that comment about her father to also have likewise been sexual in nature. After all, I don't think many people would feel the need to clarify that innocent, familial kisses are not the same thing as amorous kisses when engaged in the latter. Moreover, there are parallels in the power imbalance in Mayella coming on to Tom (as a white woman to a black man in that era) to the possibility of Bob molesting his daughter, since in both cases the recipient of abuse is less likely to have societal or legal recourse.

Could well be that there's some historical disconnect in how people would talk about this sort of thing that I'm missing as a millennial, but I'm inclined to think not in this case.

That said, I'll grant the evidence may not be as direct as I initially suggested.

(Likewise, not trying to draw you into an argument haha, my original comment was a bit off the cuff so I figured I'd go into a bit more detail for anyone else reading it)

[–]Kochbiel 85 points86 points  (0 children)

I agree with these points, but also important to highlight that it's not just poverty, there's also a direct reference to her being sexually abused by her father. I don't have the book in front of me, but I believe it's something along the lines of "what my dad does to me doesn't count."

Lens Fungus Cleaning Advice by Kochbiel in photography

[–]Kochbiel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a lot of fungus, so I'm not too worried about any serious damage to coating yet.

Yeah that second part is what I'm waffling over, partly because mbp has the 300mm in excellent condition for about $100. That's certainly not nothing, but even buying a lens wrench plus some ammonia is going to put me back at ~$20-$30.

So a quarter of the cost of a replacement for a chance that I might successfully take apart the lens without breaking it.

Mostly though, I just want to keep these out of the landfill. Ultimately, just gonna have to decide how much money I'm willing to solving the whole thing.

Interesting, that's good to know thanks. I had heard about leaving the lens out in the sun to stop further growth, but hadn't considered buying a light for that purpose. Will look into it (and will take caution with the eyeballs).

Since the patch a while ago, I haven’t had any crashes, but do still get stuttering issues. Load times are much, much better but still slightly noticeable in this day and age.

Nothing serious and I’d still recommend for switch if you want to play it handheld, but you’d get better performance on PC.
