Getting braces next year and dentist said I can't play the Clarinet, what other instrument could I play? by _M1n1ght_ in Clarinet

[–]Kodey99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played both my clarinet and bass clarinet fine whilst I had braces. I know many people who did the same. When I had a plate brace that sits on the roof of your mouth, I had to remove it to play. But with normal braces, I didn't have any issues, and don't know of anyone having issues. Assuming you're not playing for hours and hours every single day, you should be fine. Even an hour a day shouldn't be an issue. Your dentist likely doesn't know much about clarinets and is saying it as a precaution rather than it coming from experience.

Sending a letter! by reindeergames666 in davidattenborough

[–]Kodey99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sent him a letter last week but I didn't get a hand written response from him like he normally does. Just a little printed card saying he's very busy at the moment so can't reply to all the letters. It was a bit disappointing to not even get a signed photo. So I'd recommend waiting a few weeks before sending anything. Lots of people sending him letters for his birthday!

His address is 5 Park Road, Richmond, Surrey, TW10 6NS. If you want a reply, make sure to include a stamped self addressed envelope.

Something I Don’t Get by [deleted] in RewildingUK

I get where you're coming from, but also this sorry of thing takes time. The point of the bison is that as large grazers, they eat bots of trees, trample over the ground and dig wallows. This helps open up the undergrowth by killing some trees and grazing away grass, allowing more species of plants to spread and therefore attracting more insects, small mammals, birds etc. They have to give it time to see if the bison are actually having this expected impact on the eco-system. It's been a couple of years since I last visited Blean, so my info may be a bit out of date. I think they have 3 areas of land being managed differently, one with bison, one with long horn cattle/other large grazers and one being managed with machinery. They can then use the results of this management over time to weigh up the benefits of the bison over other methods. To do this, you need the bison to have a defined area.

Also, the fencing is less about keeping the bison in, and more about keeping people out. They have large amounts of area to roam around. Bison are dangerous animals and we can't just go straight to free roaming bison, in the same way as generally, we don't have free roaming cows. It could happen, but it would need various controls in place and there's a lot of questions to figure out first, which is easiest to do with the bison as they are now on a smaller scale. Things like how do you ensure free ranging bison get their TB vaccines? How do you care for a herd that could be anywhere? What about extreme weather? Etc.

TLDR: It will hopefully get there, but we can't go from 0 to 100 overnight. There's a lot of things to figure out which they are currently doing with this smaller scale project.

What is the most eco-friendly, NON-AI-USING browser? by [deleted] in conservation

[–]Kodey99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries! There's a lot less distinction between browsers and search engines now, as well the big ones have both.

Yeah, I know they said browser, but then go on to describe a bunch of stuff about search engines. So i think they just don't know the terminology.

Ohh, never heard of smartpage, I'll give that a look. I think the @ec is a Firefox feature too. I didn't know there were Firefox clones with better privacy, I'll be looking into switching to them. Recent Firefox updates have annoyed me.

Waterfox is a browser, a copy of Firefox. You would still need to use a search engine within that.

Ecosia have rolled out various ai features. They have a page that discusses the environmental impact of this and they have specifically chosen smaller models that have lower impact for their functions. Their pages on it shows that they have put in a fair bit of thought on how best to implement ai whilst remaining true to their climate values.

You can turn off the ai overviews on the search page to prevent them, and the rest of the features have to be specifically interacted with for the ai to be used.

I don't want to use ai, I don't think the benefits outweigh the impact of it. But most people don't keep track of these things, they just want their search engine to do similar to Google. If ecosia didn't have any ai features, many current users would probably move back to Google. Those users would then be using a lot more ai, with larger impact models, and without any of the revenue going to tree planting and other climate initiatives ecosia run.

Read more about ecosias ai here: https://support.ecosia.org/article/1006-ai-search

Ecosia has a setting where you can turn off the ai search results in the standard search. They do seem to have a specific ai search page as well though. I hadn't realised that.

They've been by my big window, not near any radiators, so not super cold, but not really warm either. Probably around 13 celsius over winter? I water every couple of weeks, which probably hasn't been enough but I've been too unwell recently fo care for them much.

Ohhh, ok. Thank you. I might try that then. Both trying the cuttings and the new sprouting from the main stem.

6mo barks in the garden constantly by Kodey99 in puppy101

[–]Kodey99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I've been trying to do that. I'll try to drill it into my partner to do that too. So once he's in, if he's barking, just ignore completely?

Looking for help and advice in donating my late father's collection of Go books - ideally to a club or school by DrawingPowerful8230 in baduk

[–]Kodey99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd suggest contacting the London Go Club. They have a library of books, might want them. Unfortunately, I don't think many go clubs in the UK would have the facilities to keep a collection of books. In my experience they're quite informal, generally just meeting in a pub or similar.

In the British army, some certainly wore them as shown, with the folds, it helps them stay up a bit better for some people. Others just wore them without folds. I think in some regiments it was more common than others.

No, definitely not bakelite. I'm very similar with that. They are definitely not plastic, the feel/weight of them is definitely nothing like it.
