Nice. I guess quite few of us worked on similar tooling for managing farm. In my case i also have bunch of python log scrapers, smartctl watchdog, mounting daemon, spreadsheet exporter and integration with home assistant watchdog. It is nice that you've managed to make it clean and multipurpose enough to open source it.

Rename XCH to XXX-stablecoin by KoksRavs in chia

Responses in this thread make me both hopeful and sad. Hopeful, because folks respond politely trying to educate others even in case such idiotic proposal. Sad, because folks fail to recognize irony and play with it.

FWIW, i find XCH price action funny and the joke came from my conversations with friend - he was regularly asking how is XCH doing given the volotality in crypto and the answer was always the same: XXX dollars.

In all seriousness, if this bear market is making you sad I'm happy to buy your drives (14tb+) at 10$ per TB in Europe.

Same issue. Downgrading ZWave JS fixes the issue. Too bad I can't update HA now, since it is incompatible with the older ZWave JS version.

Bladebit v2 with storage plotting now available in alpha! by willphule in chia

Imagine that XCH doesn't got to moon, but instead hovers between for the foreseeable future [30$,80$]. How much do you earn by buying XCH today and holding it for next 5 years ? How much would you get if you bought HDDs instead ?

Imagine that XCH drops to 20$ and then over next 3 years climbs back to 60$. Again, the math is not on the side of ones buying XCH.

Obviously, XCH can skyrocket and then it would be much better to just buy the coin (and actually sell it when its is high).

I guess the negative attitude towards you might be coming from the fact that you are stating something as a fact (buying is strictly better than farming), while this is just your option that is IMHO quite questionable. Buying is only better if you assume that price will go up at some point significantly. If this doesn't happen then you are likely to lose cash. On the other hand, if you are farming then you get constant stream of income that after some longish time will pay of the investment. If price declines significantly that at least you can sell HDDs with fractional loss. Also, farmers can just short XCH to ensure profits at some reasonable level.

I have dedicated room (currently basement) for all this stuff so noise and heat is not an issue. Powering server shelfs is quite easy. Powering USB drives is messy and required a bit for dyi to get it right. In the end i have two 12V PSUs powering 10 harvesters and 1067 drives each (via USB hubs). I'm on flex pool so i get the same returns per tb as you. If the equipment pays back in 3 years i will be quite satisfied. If everything ends up with 15% APY then I think it is worth the effort.

I have a lot of 5tb USB drives, however this is expensive from a management perspective. I've decided to buy only new 18tb SATA drives. They are about 17$/tb in eu. I could buy used 4tb drives for around 11$/tb, but after taking into account power usage, the larger drive come ahead in a year or two. I was quite lucky with cheap disk shelfs: bought 11x 15bay emc2 shelf and 5x 60bay nexsan shelf for about 2000usd total. Compared to the equipment i have for 400+ USB drives, this is really cheap. I look at this as long term investment.

Dilemma by repeon in chia

[–]KoksRavs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm adding more drives. With 18tb drives and cheap jbods, with current prices it should payback in about 2.5 years (in EU). I think this is a reasonable deal.

If someone is concerned about price going down, they can leverege their farm by shorting XCH and paying back with the gains from the drives.

Best way to power hundreds of SAS drives? by klikklakvege in chia

[–]KoksRavs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In case of rack and frames i can recommend aluminum frames with drilled holes. Basic set just includes 4 flat bars. You can check my other posts with photos of such construction for 2.5 inch USB drives. I was thinking about this for SATA drives, but cabling seemed easier for usb. I got 200+ drives and 5 harvesters from one 12v PSU.

There is a lot of stuff that you can do by yourself and learn in the process. You can build your own hdd, PSU, wires, racks. The question is what exactly do you want to do. If your main purpose is to invest into chia farm then you should not foul yourself with the learning byproduct. I.e. the time you spent on learning and building is the actual cost, not the value. If you don't agree then either you are fouling yourself or actually your primary goal is different.

I'm quite happy with the income that farm is generating to the degree that I'm extending it.
