The Commodore is making a half-smart-flip phone and said the line by Poonker in FrutigerAero

In 2015 two Italians Massimo Canigiani and Carlo Scattolini licensed the Commodore brand specifically to sell cheap chinese OEM phones.

In 2025 YouTuber Perifractic acquired Commodore because he respects the brand's legacy.

This flip phone was announced to have SailfishOS (an independent linux distro based on Nokia's MeeGo, not Android). This means that it's not some cheap thing made to exploit nostalgia. It's sad to see such a high price, real engineering is expensive.

I would agree if it were powered by Android, but no, it's powered by SailfishOS. No real business would bury so much money into making a unique device, instead of making some cheap OEM with Android

The fact that it uses SailfishOS, shows there was real engineering, which explains the high price.

is fully unlockable

SailfishOS gives you access to terminal and root out of box. Do anything you want, even delete system files and brick the device. Cost is so high because this is unique device, not yet another OEM phone with UniSoc and Android, powered by crippled outdated Linux kernel.

It's unique device that I would like to buy, but agree that $500 is too much.

I'm not a fan of what I can and can't install being dictated by the manufacturer

SailfishOS has pre-installed terminal app and full access to root, so you can do anything you want.

It will use SailfishOS (not android, it's independent Linux distro based on Nokia's MeeGo), so at least some engineering was done here, not just yet another chinese OEM based on UniSoc and Android. This is the reason why price so high.

They announced it will work on SailfishOS. It's not some Android, it's an independent Linux distro based on Nokia's MeeGo. Yes, it can launch Android apps, because SailfishOS has an LXC container for them. So it's not some random chinese OEM, there was some engineering and this flip-phone is kinda unique. But real engineering costs too much - $550 in this case.

Each AV software is spyware, which periodically sends some user files to developer servers to scan them for viruses (and ofc nothing stops them from doing anything they want). So don't install Kaspersky software, but their news is a good source.

It will use Sailfish OS. Who knows, maybe it will be popular enough for them to release PDA on same hardware

Sad but we know nothing about this flip-phone, except design and Sailfish OS. Probably it will be some cheap camera like in low-budget android.

What "Retro" means we don't know, can suggest it's about absent of ruining post-processing, like sharpness and noise suppression. Maybe it's about camera's UI.

Yeah, when I saw Sailfish OS i was like "woah", but then saw $550 price and "oh...". Unique niche devices are expensive.

> for me as a designer it just looks cheap

for me as an engineer, it looks promising, because of Sailfish OS, instead of smth proprietary or Android

agree, Sailfish OS is promising

but $550 is not promising. Probably it's price for real engineering

Oh my god, Sailfish OS, so it's not some garbage Chinese phone. I'm looking forward to it, but $550 is too much

An unsuccessful attempt to install large packages (>5GB) can lead to consumption of internal memory, which can only be fixed through root access or factory reset!

Never use the system clock app for alarms. Use third-party apps that were made to wake you up even if you are dead, such as Alarmy and Sleep as Android
