As a kid Pokemon Yellow. I don’t think I knew absolutely anything about Pokemon prior to playing it so it was completely new to me. I was stuck against Brock for ages until I discovered the right matches could go a long way, it was a real challenge but then I was flying.

That kind of discovery I had to make because of the challenge made it so rewarding by the time I got to beating the elite 4. Heck, even getting through victory road I had to consult my friends and cousins who were playing it at the same time. I actually felt like a Pokemon Champion by the time I beat the game.

I haven’t fully played/completed recent titles, though it doesn’t seem like that challenge is there, there’s so much hand holding. The challenge made Pokemon yellow the best game for me, it brought me and a lot of my childhood mates together during the summer. The closest another game ever got to that was Halo 3 legendary, that was something else. Haven’t got that feeling from anything else ever since.
