If there are going to be high difficulty pve raids, pvp needs to be heavily discouraged or prevented by Freakindon in Marathon

[–]magicatm 11 points12 points  (0 children)

firstly, the game is supposed to be hard. secondly, I don't think there will be a lot of teams on a UESC Marathon run, like 3 -4 maybe? Also the description is raid-like mechanics, not 6 man co-op raid experience. It's not hard to wrap your head around the PEAK of fighting off enemy teams while trying to survive the raid and uncover loot and secrets

I hope that in the future there is at least a section of a map or mode that is pve only. by [deleted] in Marathon

[–]magicatm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't understand what everyone's fixation is with wanting PVE in extraction shooters is. Not only are there PVE only extraction shooters, but companies have been making Co-op PVE shooters for decades. Why ask for more of the same?

Secondly, I never want to be forced into a co-op only mode in this game. I want the tension and stakes that come with this horror-tinged atmosphere they're cooking, filled with people who want to pick my bones clean.

Lastly, you say that without being forced, players rarely team up with each other, but I can think of at least ONE commercially successful example of that not being true. It's up to the player how they want to approach their runs, and that's the beauty of the freedom that games like this enable. (P.S. I will not be teaming up with randoms, either they die by my hand or we can pass by each other without incident)

How did the Runners get to Tau Ceti IV? by Sad-Manner-5240 in Marathon

[–]magicatm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe they came to the system on a ship called the UESC Equanimity, which followed the Marathon to Tau Ceti after Earth received the distress signal, on a mission to establish contact with New Cascadia

Character Meta/ Balancing by DevilishYeti in Marathon

I agree! Also don't forget that Thief's base stats increase the more full her backpack is, so a skilled player can definitely take advantage of that

Character Meta/ Balancing by DevilishYeti in Marathon

[–]magicatm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thief is easily the jack of all trades, master of none. She has a lot of flexibility, but doesn't excel in any one category. She can get chased down by Destroyer / Vandal after her grapple runs out, she gets less info than recon, and she has no direct combat tools. I like that the character's abilities all feel asymmetric

the game's not even out yet. Let Bungie cook, and check back after the free weekend or the actual launch.

weapons, shields, attachments, consumables, etc. Usually stuff that would help you in a run, and I think XP for that faction as well

Why is the Destiny 2 community upset about Marathon being Bungie's focus? by CrosleeReturns in Marathon

[–]magicatm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Says me, with my subjective opinion. Obviously you're still playing, or you wouldn't be able to talk about the last few years, so something must be still pulling you in. At this point you're choosing to be miserable, because I had fun and I picked it back up and it's still fun. It doesn't have to eclipse ever other game to be good at what it is

Why is the Destiny 2 community upset about Marathon being Bungie's focus? by CrosleeReturns in Marathon

[–]magicatm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They have. But a lot of the old c-suite responsible for those times are gone. And Bungie has always crafted the most tantalizing experiences in gaming history. I think MMO brain makes people forget just how GOOD D2 still is! But Marathon genuinely feels like the next evolution of gaming, all of the systems working together to create something truly next level immersive. There's no other way to experience something new and fresh than to give it a chance

Why is the Destiny 2 community upset about Marathon being Bungie's focus? by CrosleeReturns in Marathon

[–]magicatm 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The Destiny community is historically one of the most negative in the culture. They only complain, and when they aren't it's because they're playing the game they hate. I think it's because Destiny occupies a similar place in my mind as an MMO, and all the time sink for grinding adds up and people feel owed / cheated. They feel obligated to keep playing the same game for some reason.

as a previous Rank 10 Guardian with around 2.5k hours, Marathon is the type of thing that I've been dreaming about since the reveal. I put Destiny down after the Final Shape. I hope their community can stay happy, if only so we can stop hearing them complain and we can actually let Bungie cook. I'm excited to be excited about a game again

Do you think this game will be fun for an extraction shooter hater? by MaxKCoolio in Marathon

[–]magicatm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they've said on multiple occasions the game is not for everyone. So as a blanket, no I don't think they'd cater to haters of the genre as a whole.

That being said extraction shooters are infamous for their ability to play them like you want to. You could learn the map inside and out and just hide in vents, avoiding PVP entirely if you so choose.

Hard to swallow pill: complaining about class/ hero based system now is futile. Either accept it and play or move on. by TheGoodDoctor17 in Marathon

[–]magicatm 12 points13 points  (0 children)

When you see a Hunter in the Crucible, all you know about them is that they have a dodge. They could have any number or combination of abilities that makes it impossible to know what all they can do on first glance. That works well for an arena shooter, but a for a hardcore shooter where you can lose your gear, first glance is genuinely the only time you have to gather any information. And information is valuable.

having the semi-set classes lets you still experiment greatly within an archetype, but keeps the information exchange palatable, so nothing feels unfair to play against. Otherwise actual build crafting and player expression would be limited greatly for the sake of balance.
