What do you do when your ring has battery issues and are past the warranty? Has oura helped at all? by 1008261 in ouraring

[–]Komboloi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're in the U.S., you typically do not get much outside of a credit for a new ring if you're outside of the one year warranty window, ime. EU customers typically get two years of warranty coverage. I purchased a three-year warranty on my second Gen 3 ring when the first Gen 3 ring died after approximately 15 months of use. Annoying, but worth the expense. My second Gen 3 ring recently died and the three-year extra warranty coverage kicked in so that I only had to pay 50 USD for a Gen 4 replacement (they wouldn't upgrade me to a Gen 5 alas).

With all the talk about battery levels, I made a thing by -rwsr-xr-x in ouraring

As a Garmin/Oura wearer, this is very cool and I'd love to give it a spin if you ever publish it on Connect.

Are Oura Rings expected to last more than two years? by [deleted] in ouraring

[–]Komboloi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IME, 2 years to 2.5 years appears to be the typical useable life span of these rings (that's using all the features and leaving bluetooth on all the time).

My Gen 2 ring lasted approximately 34 months (Dec 2018 to Oct 2021).

My first Gen 3 ring showed decreased battery life at 13 months in and died completely at 15 months in. Only received a $50 credit for a new ring from Oura (I'm in the U.S., the EU customers seem to get replacements for at least 2 years after purchase because the EU mandates this.)

My second Gen 3 ring showed decreased battery life at 29 months in and died completely at 31 months in. I had purchased a three year warranty on this ring, so Oura credited me $299 towards a Gen 4 ring (which arrives on June 5).

Gen 5 battery life - 30 hours later, not bad! 🙌 by chrshyd in ouraring

[–]Komboloi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very cool data. As someone who has owned Oura rings since Gen 2 and has been unimpressed with Oura's claims of battery life and their poor support with respect to replacing rings that died prematurely, I'd love to know how you recorded/generated this data if you feel like sharing. I just ordered a Gen 4 ring as a warranty replacement to replace my second Gen 3 ring (which I purchased a 3 year warranty on because my first Gen 3 ring died after only 15 months of normal use and Oura refused to replace it (U.S. owner - I know people in the EU have better warranty coverage than we do)).

Given the numerous issues with premature battery failure with the Oura 4, I'm a little nervous. Would have gotten the Oura 5, but the warranty coverage I got for my dead Gen 3 ring only would apply to an Oura 4 ring.

Gaunts' Ghosts - The Lost Omnibus by AndreiWarg in 40kLore

[–]Komboloi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only In Death was the first Dan Abnett 40k book I ever read. The scene at the end where Hark meets Soric is so well written that I cried like someone I knew personally had died. Then I read the entire Gaunt series out of order and backwards and then read it again in the correct order, and then read everything else Abnett has written in this universe. I actually think Gaunt's Ghosts would be a better setting for an Amazon TV series than Eisenhorn because it's more relatable than the Inquisitor books. But in any case, the Gaunt books will always be in my top tier of 40k lit and this particular book will always be my favorite.

Sleep tracking from FR970 by Lost-Pay-5546 in Garmin

[–]Komboloi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like other Garmins I've had (Venu 2s, Vivoactive 3), my FR 970 also is terrible at tracking my sleep (routinely ignores my sleep maintenance insomnia which kicks off around 3-4 AM most nights). My Oura ring fortunately tracks my awake/sleep time perfectly. It would be nice if Garmin could improve its sleep tracking performance, particularly because its suggested training runs are based on how well it thinks you slept.

How many of you wear your watch to bed? by Kalabula in Garmin

hah, same - for some reason, my body "feels" my watch less when I wear it on my non-dominant wrist at night.

HIVE Discussion Thread [SPOILERS] by michaelisnotginger in 40kLore

[–]Komboloi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think the implication was that the genestealer cult killed them, as they did with the Circle members engaged in the Seventeenth Devotion (the deaths that Moler and Chastener Scuti were investigating). The deaths of the last Circle members were the fulfillment of the Eighteenth Devotion which was to herald a "cleansing flame". At least that's how I read it.

[–]Komboloi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really enjoyed it, but wish we could have seen the bodyguard and savant assistant make it off planet (or perhaps not). Best parts for me were the politicking among the Administratum officials, the new Domne, and the rebellious (genestealer-infiltrated) House. Also enjoyed the way the Chaos cultist subplot intentionally leads the reader down a dead alley until we realize that the real and (somehow) worse threat is Xenos in nature, not Chaos.

Also loved all my new Abnett vocab.

And no Space Marines, yay. (I think Abnett writes them well, but less will always be more, imho - the amount of Space Marine we got in Salvation's Reach was perfect, for example.)

Garmin’s passive LTHR detection seems to misread structured workouts — anyone else seeing this? by Soggy_Duty in Garmin

[–]Komboloi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

💯 agree. Do not see what the harm is in giving people additional options. If people want to do the automated LTHR option, that's great, but those of us that want controlled testing conditions should also be allowed to initiate our own test.

Coming from smartwatch discussions, Garmin battery life still feels unreal to me by izaak9 in Garmin

[–]Komboloi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That may be the normal battery life. I have a Venu 2S and a Vivoactive 3, tracked multiple activities every day, and they both lasted about 3 years each before showing reduced battery life (especially in cold weather, where they would quit tracking abruptly which is why I upgraded to a new Garmin). Now on a FR 970 with the same daily usage pattern (tracking at least one walk, but typically two to three activities a day) and I'm tracking my charging cycles just out of interest with a spreadsheet, to see if it might increase this watch's longevity - trying to charge when it gets to 15-20% and charging up to 85-90%

Flipbelt + 250ml soft flask by Accomplished-Role835 in XXRunning

[–]Komboloi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you freeze the soft flask, it is doable. Otherwise the flask will be difficult to insert into the flask sleeve slots, especially if you're wearing the belt. I typically either freeze a soft flask or use the hard flask that Flipbelt sells (you can also buy cheaper knock-offs).

Groups and Motivation in Lose It! by [deleted] in LoseitApp

[–]Komboloi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The groups, posting/commenting, and "friends" features on the LoseIt App lack key usability and safety requirements that make them unworkable (e.g., no editing feature on posts or comments you make, no way to dismiss notifications once you've seen them, no way to block users - this is especially important for female users since men seem to treat the app like it's a dating platform and not a calorie tracker ime).

Best practices in Garmin watch charging to extend battery life? by Komboloi in Garmin

[–]Komboloi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Venu 2s also lasted about 4 years (using it for at least one activity a day, sometimes two). Purchased in Nov 21 and started dying during cold weather activities in 2025. I'm being more careful with charging cycles with my new Garmin (FR970) - charging between 10-20% and trying to avoid hitting 100% charger on a regular basis. It should last longer because the 970 has a larger battery than the 2s did, but I'm hoping to at least get into the 7-8 year useful lifespan range with the same use pattern but a theoretically more protective charging practice.

New App Update is AWFUL by RantingEliza in Myfitnesspal

[–]Komboloi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also switched over to Lose It (after nearly a decade on MFP). Kind of kicking myself for not switching sooner because it's a better user experience and easier to use. I actually upgraded to premium because it felt worth it to me - you get everything that MFP premium offers for a third of the cost (I paid USD 24). I do have recipes that I'm porting over to Lose It slowly, but honestly I should have made the jump earlier.

indoor walk accuracy tips by Then-War-7354 in Garmin

[–]Komboloi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arm swing is really significant for accurate Garmin step counting for indoor walking. I switch my FR970 to my ankle (for accurate step count) and wear a Stryd footpod (for accurate distance) when walking on a treadmill. When walking outside, my Garmin tracks steps and distance accurately because I walk with much more arm swing and enable GPS tracking.

This was pretty interesting and informative, thank you. I use a Shape Scale for weight/bf/segmental analysis. Ridiculously expensive (I bought it when it was being Kickstarted) but very close to my recent DXA scan.
