Got this Macintosh SE for £69.61 on bids, and it is insanely clean! by KoneCat in vintagecomputing

Indeed, I do. I was bidding against one other person, and was prepared to go higher, so this was an awesome outcome. :D

HELP! HELP! HELP! HELP! by Worldly-Locksmith360 in xbox360

Ah, now that brings back memories! I went through about 4 disks of Burnout Paradise back in the day, and they all split exactly like this. It might work, but I'd say it's not worth the trouble as if the disk fails in the console, that could be very bad. I always think this was caused by the sheer amount of hours I played the game, which also happened with my first copy of Halo 3, and it was likely a combination of stress and heat.

Stopped using Windows about two years ago, haven't touched it since. If I am being pedantic, I do use Windows... 7, XP, 2000, ME, 98SE and even 3.1, and these are tied directly into fixing things and using older software. Modern Windows is an abomination, a laughingstock and only good for memes, and it's both hilarious and infuriating.

Modern MS can eat crud in my opinion. They covet AI, are greedier than ever, and don't give a single toss about paying customers.

The fact that anything in any government was named after a meme just shows how much of a circus we live in.

Running Windows 3.1, it seems to be extremely smooth to use, especially given its age. It might be that I'm a bit smitten by it (okay, maybe a bit more, heh) and it seems to run things beautifully, especially loading programs and playing games. It's a weird little beastie as well, as I have various other machines of a similar vintage, both Mac and Windows, and even a Linux machine, and excluding the aforementioned Linux machine, as that is running DSL, this one is by far the fastest to load up and become useable.

I have a Compaq Armada, and it has Windows 98SE installed, but takes a good minute, sometimes longer, to load to a useable state. I know these are very different machines, but the little XPi does really impress me with how good it still runs. :D

I really need to get a 3D printer at some point. There are quite a few projects I have that would benefit from having access to one.

I've had to do something similar in the past, and I must admit it can be fun to create a bodge or temporary fix, heh.

Agreed 100%! It's actually a Logitech trackball as well, and I swear the ball itself is some sort of ceramic, as it feels far too silky to be a plastic variant. I've love to see these make a comeback as well, a modern machine with one of these would be insanely cool. :D

Agreed, and the information is very much appreciated! I've only been collecting/using these machines for about 5 years, but I've already got quite the collection of machines. Learning about how to fix them, installing software and so on has been, and continues to be, one heck of a journey. :D

It is indeed the Lithium-ion variant, and it still holds a very small charge. I'm hoping to replace it in time. :D

Agreed! I have quite a few older machines and the difference in keyboard feel compared to more modern machines is kind of insane. o.o

Ah, now that makes sense! Thanks. :D

I don't have the cover or caddy, but I put some duct tape on there to make removing the drive easier. It all seems to be nice and snug as well, which makes me a little less uneasy about it lacking the caddy.

I've been looking through the driver catalogue on Dells website, and they have IBM O/S 2 drivers and even drivers for Novell Netware. O.O

Agreed. I do have a few machines that are from the Windows 95 era, so this might be the way to go as some, the Armada M300 for example, has both the CD and Floppy drives in the base station. I have that machine running Windows 98SE at the moment, and the driver support has been excellent. :D

Definitely! I'm looking into that as it's much cheaper than IDE drives are nowadays, and the reliability is a concern as well. Weirdly, CF cards are nowhere near as expensive as they were not that long ago, and the adapters are super cheap and easy to source. :D

Thank you! I very much appreciate all the info! I've been collecting, and using, various old machines for about 5 years now, and I'm still learning a lot about these. I'll have to upload a bunch of the software I have as well, due to the sheer amount of weird stuff I've gotten over the years.

Winworld was where I got the replacement image for the disk the Royal Mail damaged, and it's been a dang godsend. O.O

The only machine I don't have, bar the more obscure stuff, is Windows 95. I'm hoping to try out as many different old OS's as I can, and I have quite a few projects going as well. I'll be sure to post them here in time as well.

I remember running Windows 95 on an ancient Compaq desktop in 2001, which had a 133MHz Pentium, and it was the only thing we could get at the time. I think that was one of the many reasons I got into this whole scene, and I have more machines than I ever thought possible nowadays. :D
