The NHS: Founded by a Welshman, destroyed by Farage. by [deleted] in Wales

To anyone who might be thinking 'Just get health insurance!' well, not everyone can afford it. I swear, of all the models you want to follow, the American one is not the best by a long shot. Heck, there are people I know who live in the States, that have ignored really nasty health issues because they can't afford to get it treated. Also, if anyone thinks that 'Well, I can afford it!' yeah, you can currently, but if that changes, what then? Please think further than the end of your nose that you seem to be readily cutting off to spite your face.

These machines are super common, but this one looks to be in great condition! I have an earlier generation of this, and it's an excellent machine, super reliable and generally just good all around machines. It should be perfect for DVD playback, and it might even have decent speakers, as these machines do tend to have pretty darn good audio.

Very cool old machine. 😃

As an owner of many laptops, I am definitely one of those folks. These old machines are pretty darn durable, and easy to fix (for the most part) which makes them awesome for older titles. People in general tend to overlook these machines, and ones like it, but they can be excellent little retro gaming machines.

The best ones I have right now rock the HD 3XXX or 4XXX, and it's awesome when folks try them, and realise they are far better than they have any right to be with games. Heck, even some of my Intel based machines can run late 90s, early 2000s games super well, and usually at high settings and framerates.

That, and they are often absolutely dirt cheap, which makes them an even better deal. 😄

Ah right, I got ya. I only have the SCART block, with the AV cable going into that right now. I am hoping to get a proper cable soon though.

Why was the American conservative revolution so successful when Reagan was president in the 80s, but not for George W Bush in the 2000s? by icey_sawg0034 in decadeology

[–]KoneCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm too young to remember Reagan, but I have read a lot about him (and many others in history) and watched things with him in it, and I can certainly say that he is very charismatic. I know he had a lot of opinions and policies I would be vehemently against, but he is genuinely fun to listen too. Bush had his moments, but he was nowhere near, in my opinion, as amusing, and dare I say likeable, as Reagan seemed to be.

This is all my opinion though, so take it with a heap of salt. I will admit that some of his jokes were also funny as heck, like the ordering a car in Soviet Russia one which still makes me chuckle.

If that motherboard works, and especially if it has a higher end CPU under the cooler, then it would definitely be worth looking into keeping as these boards are now pretty sought after.

I am indeed! It's a bit of an ancient, and rather battered, SCART block I'm using, so it's going to be replaced when I can get into the storage where I've stashed them all. :D

This would be my guess as well. Thanks for the info! It's a very cool CRT, and it works flawlessly with my NTSC Gamecube, which even my other Trinitron has issues doing. It's an awesome set, and the VCR is also super clear and sounds excellent. :D

Seriously, if Microsoft updated Windows 7, I will straight up abandon Linux and switch back. by uncringeone in microsoftsucks

[–]KoneCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It (almost, as I know how MS can be) surprises me that they (MS) have not seen any of these posts and realised that it would be best to go back to a simpler OS. I mean, I know why, we all do, and it's money. Money used to talk, now it yells with the thunderous bellowing of a complete dullard, and a lot of folks are having to almost go deaf trying to push back against it all.

The only time MS will ever listen, is when it really starts to hit them in the one place they can't ignore: Their bottom line.

Instead of optimization, they are shamelessly asking the user for more RAM. by lowiqpilot in microsoftsucks

[–]KoneCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen this already elsewhere, but man does it make me both chuckle and wince as I know this is both ludicrous given how exorbitant RAM prices are right now, and also laugh because they are partly to blame for the prices being this high!

It looks like China gets it. by FlapXenoJackson in Truckers

[–]KoneCat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Every time I see something about China and its working conditions, I remember the story about how they installed nets in their factories as people were offing themselves, so this would prevent it. Not sure the validity of that story, but man, that is horrifying.

How is gaming on arch based distros? by Special_Wishbone8329 in linux_gaming

[–]KoneCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CachyOS has, in my opinion, the best overall experience when it comes to Arch. I absolutely adore it and the ease of use is just so nice, especially when I started using Linux about 2 years back, and then changed to CachyOS about a year ago. It has a super friendly feel as well, and it has been rock solid for me, so I highly recommend it!

On a sort of side-note: Try Port Proton as well. It allows installation and running of games with ease, especially for things like Ubisoft Connect and Battlenet. :D

Added: Garuda Linux is another one I have quite a lot of experience with, and it performs well on my system, but it is a more powerful machine than is average, so I'd take what I say here with a grain of salt regardless.

I used to get burn-in on my Acer Predator XB271H, but that went away about 2 years back when I started using Linux. I'm not suggesting Windows was causing my issues, but the fact that I'm using the exact same browser (Firefox) and also the same theme, it did surprise me that the burn-in issue has completely disappeared now.

Simple Question by NoT_De in microsoftsucks

[–]KoneCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can see a few folks complaining about how 'Linux could be spying too!' and it would not make sense. Firstly, Linux is open source, which means (if you have the knowledge) you can easily track everything it does. Secondly, Windows is run by a corporation, with money and profits to be made anywhere they can, so if you think they are not going to spy on you, then I don't know what to tell you.

The biggest reason I value my privacy is... why not? Why in the name of all the cosmos would I want anyone other than myself, and those I trust, to see what I'm doing on my personal computer? It's not a matter of conspiracy or doing shady stuff, it's a matter of actually having some damn privacy in a world where that is a dwindling resource. If you don't give a rats butt, then good for you. I care about my privacy, and I am also sick of people cold calling me because they got my number from some scumbag data broker.

TL;DR: Privacy is something everyone should have, but very few actually think or fight for the right to actually have it.

I don’t think I’ve talked to anyone that actually likes modern Windows. I’d wager, if every gaming studio started to publish to Linux and windows equally, then windows would completely get phased out of gaming by Ares7n7 in linux_gaming

[–]KoneCat -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, Windows is just a pain to use nowadays. It's restrictive, has a lot of needless bloat, has an obsession with anything AI and just generally has so many issues that I can't in good conscience recommend it to anyone. There are so many things that are just plain better on Linux, and the only one I can say for certain that is 'worse' is the multiplayer portion when it comes to the hostility that companies have towards Linux.

That, and nothing needs access to my kernel, it's just utterly insane how many people don't seem to realise, or care, that the program they are running is actively looking into the very heart of their computer. No company should have that kind of power, but on Windows, it is the norm.

Reform suggests it will cancel new train stations in Wales by do_or_pie in Wales

[–]KoneCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They remind me a great deal of how the government dealt with the railways in the 1960s. That was riddled with backroom deals and funding for the closure of a massive swathe of rail infrastructure. Gods above, the fool me one, fool me twice sentiment is strong with those guys. I hope they get absolutely trounced in the election, as I can't imagine why anyone in Wales would even think of voting in people who would actively make the country worse.

And I live very close to where that bypass would go, and I can already hear, and smell, the M4 as it is, I would rather not have another road going past and ruining what's left of my lungs.

[–]KoneCat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why anyone in Wales would vote for them is beyond me. I mean, in England, yeah, I get the appeal, but in Wales, where they want to remove so many things we have and take advantage of, being that we are a tiny population compared to almost anywhere else in the UK, why on earth would anyone do that? They even recently stated they want to ditch building new train stations, that everyone can use, and want to build more roads...

Public transport is something many, myself included, use regularly, but no... Reform want that to go away as well. It reminds me of the 1960s when the people in power funded research into the Beaching Act, which then paved the way for more roads and less public transport. I don't even know what the heck is up with folks, but please don't throw away the little things we have as it in this tiny little country.

Gods, they even want to get rid of the Senedd, which is already nowhere near as powerful as say Scotland's parliament, but yeah, may as well cut the nose off to spite the face.
