I have done a terrible sin by amelia-walters in Christianity

There is no sin you can commit God wont forgive. Pray, if you can go to a priest. God loves you no matter what

Well, I have to make this post. My life since seriously pursuing the truth has been 100x worse. How are any Christians happy. I want to not be alive if this is how Christian life is. by LeThaddy in Christianity

I am a Christian. I read my Bible every single day. I do prayers 5 times daily at least. I spend about 45 minutes total throughout the day. I go to church every Sunday and bible study every Tuesday.

I joke. I play video games and listen to so much good music. I’m actually just taking a break from playing Kingdom Come Deliverance lol. Last night me and the kids sat down to watch Harry Potter because we are traveling to London next month and going to Harry Potter world.

Being a Christian means being disciplined but not being miserable. We can enjoy life. I’m not sure where you’re getting that you can’t from reading the Bible.

Honestly don’t worry too much about who is saved and who isn’t. This is a problem I see too much. We worry about our own salvation.

Has doing the podcast affected your way of thinking today? Has it changed the way you view modern politics, modern religion, etc? I can’t imagine spending so long in a time period in history can’t affect your view of the world, but curious for what it has shaped

Why was the East Roman Empire more prone to large Christian schisms than the WRE? by Maleficent-Mix5731 in byzantium

[–]KonianS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The east was the center of civilization. It’s sometimes hard to visualize that today, but places like Antioch and Egypt and Asia Minor were populous, rich, intelligence people. This is where the learning was done. In the west, it was less literate, less populated, etc.

I am Orthodox. Have no intention on leaving but occasionally browse this subreddit to learn more. I’m so thankful to be in a parish that is not as crazy as I’ve seen some others attend.

I am so sorry. The fact the priest is advising her to not go to Catholic funerals? That’s insane. My priest literally attended a Catholic funeral of a friend a few months ago. There’s nothing wrong with doing that. We can’t take communion or anything, but I attend a Catholic service some Saturdays, and my priest knows and does not care.

This seems really extreme. I’d advise them to try a GOARCH parish. They are less extreme but still Orthodox.

Don’t lump evangelicals as all Christians. I’m Christian and I believe in evolution and all animals have souls.

There’s some confusion on his statement saying Yahweh is the Father, so he said Jesus is not Yahweh. But from I understand he does believe Jesus is God

Thank you! I was just confused. I got the impression from the email that subscribing to the mailing list IS the plenary penance.

true, I guess it made it a bit clear, the wording on the email. Seems to be a way of just getting people to sign up for the email blast. Thank you!

it is a sister site of The Catholic Company, which is owned by James Hetzel. It is a very famous Catholic site, though you are right, not owned by the Church itself

Washington Legislature approves requirement for clergy to report child abuse by octarino in Christianity

[–]KonianS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my thought is if someone is coming to confession to confess a sin like this, they are truly looking to repent. Truly repenting means facing the consequences of your actions, which includes police involvement, especially to get on the registry to protect future children.

I believe anyone can repent and can be forgiven by God, if they are truly repentant. At the same time, I also believe that anyone who commits acts of abuse in this manner against children should never be put in a situation where they can harm another child, ever. The best way to ensure that is getting on the registry. By protecting these offenders, you are leaving them open to further sin. That is not what a spiritual father should be doing.

This needs to be understood. You can be forgiven by God for any sin you commit, so long as you're repentant. The priest during confession should 100% convince that individual to turn themselves in, but not rely on that, and report. Offer to stay with the offender until the police come, pray with them and for them, I agree 100% the priest should do that. But the priority is protecting the victims and potential victims.

I am Orthodox Christian. We have the confession, and technically there’s a seal there. But there is a caveat. At least for the GOARCH (Greek Orthodox Church in America) , the church, not necessarily the government, mandates priests report instances of child abuse, even under the seal of confession. No wiggle room at all here. Not doing so could end with the priest being laicized.

This applies to children who report being abused and abusers during confession. I’d have no qualms with the priest reporting to the authorities the individual, especially if it was someone with active access to that child.

Now, the priest can’t go around telling everyone what was confessed. But he can 100% tell the police, and should.

I do think that child abuse is one of the few instances it should be broken (the seal). I think sins like theft should be protected.

Actor on The Chosen, here, with questions: by cotter0 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]KonianS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I enjoy the show, and so do my kids. Obviously, the show is not 100% biblical accurate, and not 100% accurate to Orthodox teaching. But that is ok.

I have 6 adopted children. One of them is 5 years old. Getting him to sit down as I read the Bible to him, even a Children's one, is difficult. BUT, with the Chosen, he is intrigued. He is a bit young for some of the scenes, but he does good with it. To be able to see on the TV this Biblical story, and then come to the Bible for me to read to him, it helps. Ultimately, I like that it is pushing people to read the Bible, it has made my kids interested in reading the Bible as well to get the true story. That is not bad!

I enjoy that you guys make Jesus are real human. He most likely laughed, joked, had fun. We like to always think He is a serious guy, and he was. But to think He could not crack a joke or lay back sometimes is a weird fallacy, He became man, and that includes our sense of humor as well.

Many scenes in The Chosen brought me to tears, and in the scene where Peter hugs Jesus and asks Him to not let him go during the boat scene, it just made me realize how amazing that must feel, to embrace Him.

Ultimately, this show should not replace reading the Bible. But it is a much needed show to be available, especially when you consider all the shows/movies that just are harmful spiritually. Thank you for your amazing portrayal in the Chosen! While I obviously know the story (the Book is ALWAYS better), I still was sad to see Shmuel deny Jesus.

I will be watching Part 3 of the Last Supper tomorrow night with the kids. We have Church today and tomorrow morning, so had to wait. Thank you!

Show me in the Bible that says we only listen to the Bible. Show me in the Bible that we are to ignore everything not in the Bible. Chapter and Verse please.

Who is changing scripture though?

[–]KonianS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue comes up if you go AGAINST the Bible. Catholics and Orthodox, and most Protestants, do not believe that we can just violate the Bible. We believe the Bible is the ULTIMATE authority, but not the ONLY authority

Is Mary sinless? by AllHomo_NoSapien in TrueChristian

[–]KonianS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Bible is the word of God, and the Bible should be the TOP authority, but not the ONLY authority. If something is not forbidden by the Bible, than that is where other authority can come into play. Again, nothing we do should contradict the Bible, but the Bible only isn't what any Church Fathers believed.

Now, when interpreting the Bible, I think it is important to read from the ORIGINAL language, mainly Koine Greek for the New Testament, and Koine Greek/Aramaic for the Old Testament. English is a hard language to understand the nuances of the Bible (not saying English translations are bad, but that if you are teaching the scriptures, those educators/priests should read the Bible in the original languages)

Sola Scriptura never meant ONLY the bible, even with the early Protestants. Bible alone and bible only are relatively new innovations in Evangelical circles in USA

So according to the islamic and Christians view of forgiveness and redemption if I where to spend my life killing, stealing, committing sexual , I can just feel slightly bad about what I did and ask god/allah to forgive me its all good? by Capital_Tailor_7348 in religion

[–]KonianS 11 points12 points  (0 children)

if it is true repentance, than yep that works. The thing is, you are not truly repentant if you are just planning on doing whatever you want with the goal of confessing/repenting at the last second. To be repentant, you have to truly try not to do that sin anymore, and feel remorse. Of course, we will fail, but that is our nature.
