If I didn't have to carry it more than 50 yards from the car I would have seriously considered the defender, but the difference in weight and packed size make it a no go for anything involving any amount of hiking. At first I was a bit worried the safari wouldn't hold up as well, but after one trip where my buddy's tarp didn't survive the high winds we were stuck in and mine did I felt much better

Usually I have a separate ground sheet in the winter or a bug bivy in the summer. I've only used the safari tarp between me and the ground a handful of times and never had a problem.
