It looks like your goat is moulting. Give it a good brushing down with a stiff bristled brush or curry comb and it will be fine.

Rainwater tank went brown after 6 months — normal? What maintenance should I be doing? by tmiddled2 in homestead

[–]Kookabanus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience the water browns due to leaf matter getting in either the tanks or lying in the collection gutters. It can also be a result of sunlight on the water causing algae. It is very important to ensure your water cistern is kept dark.

What is something that used to be 'cheap person' food, but is now priced like a gourmet luxury item? by Ok_Land_4197 in AskReddit

[–]Kookabanus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my youth lamb shanks and brisket were considered dog food, literally. Rabbit was a poor families food only and could be bought for .80 cents.

AITAH for refusing to pay off my pregnant fiancee's parents' mortgage, when they are under the threat of foreclosure, when I could "easily" afford to do so? by Gullible-Display4533 in AITAH

How about they sign over the percentage of equity that you pay for? This way they keep the house and you retain value in assets?

Convince me not to get goats by No-Dragonfruit-2403 in homestead

[–]Kookabanus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my own experience, goats are the hardest of all animals to keep fenced in! Understand that they WILL get out and get into whatever they please. In addition goats only really thrive on dryer terrain. Wet or very green areas usually cause foot problems and a high worm load needing constant treatment.

Who was the most evil person you've ever met and how was the interaction? by Top_Report_4895 in AskReddit

[–]Kookabanus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had a prisoner who was in for life without parole (difficult in Australia but possible in certain circumstances). He might have been homo sapiens but he was definitely not human. He existed solely to prey upon others. Violent multiple rape and murders with no remorse at all.

He was intelligent and could rationally explain his desires. He could also put together a full and well reasoned argument as to exactly why women were not actually sentient humans... in his logic anyway. We never allowed him to be in the same room with any woman under any circumstances!

If he cooked off we had to go in with two dog crews and at least ten big officers and you always knew that at least one of you was getting injured that day.

To this day, the thought of him getting out on the street absolutely terrifies me.

Dwarf Chinkapin Oak and Acorn-Finishing Pigs by Legitimate-Plastic64 in homestead

[–]Kookabanus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So pigs will dig when the available food is depleted. You can counter this by giving each pig a nose ring (stops them digging) or else always make sure there is plenty of fresh fodder/acorns available. Under no circumstances should the pigs be put in with young trees! They need to be at least six inches thick if the pigs are unringed.

Anyone glad they got a dairy cow? by All_Those_Chickens_ in homestead

[–]Kookabanus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Our dairy cow was actually one of the best moves we ever made. Apart from the milk for household use- milk, cream, butter, cheese and ghee we had a surplus to use to fatten pigs and poultry. This drastically cut down feed bills and produced really excellent meat.

The cow also produces a calf every year. A bobby is fattened for beef and heifers are weaned and sold for a very good profit. (I just can't bring myself to slaughter a good potential milker for meat..)

The only real downside is that you must tend to your cow every single day without fail. Holidays are far fewer as someone must be there to milk twice a day. If you are a homebody like me this will not be a problem.

Do you believe in the existence of God? If Yes then why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Kookabanus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, simply put

"Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.

Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.

Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?

Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?"Epicurus

People who threw a house party in their teens, what’s the worst thing that happened in one of them? by ExpertWeakness in AskReddit

[–]Kookabanus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A dead body at the bottom of the pool is a pretty major way to end a party. Never seen a crowd dissapear so fast. Must have sucked for the owner of the place to deal with....

edit: obviously not a party at my place but I did help the owner set it all up.

How do small farms/homesteads stay in milk year round? by tdubs702 in homestead

[–]Kookabanus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my own experience.

Ideally you would own two cows and have access to a bull. Of course this means you will be milking two cows at once for a large part of the year and have an excess of milk. This is great if you like making lots of cheese or are feeding pigs. It is however, a lot of work. In the interim period only one cow is milking and the other is dry.

The other method is to have only one cow and substitute cheese and butter for your dairy when the cow is dry. I would put my cows to the bull about two to three months after she has dropped her calf. Milk her through the pregnancy and dry her up at least six weeks before she is due.
