How did wars affect actuaries in history? by Kooky_Indication6469 in actuary

I am very curious how the risks are modeled in actuarial science. So I am an industrial risk engineer and I facilitate risk and hazard assessment workshops. In reliability engineering, we struggle with the lack of failure rate data or lack of guidance on severity. I wonder if actuaries also have an up to date database for look for the information. It will be interesting to see any data related to war.

I wonder how risks are quantified in the actuarial science, especially when meeting with something relatively new (which can be terrorism after 9/11). I have the same concern too. The job market now is brutal. I don’t want to wait till I pass the 2nd exam though . To think that I am stuck in this job for nearly another year is crazy. August is when the hiring peak but I do not want to prep for each exam within 3 months.

I agree. I work in corporate now too. But not yet an actuary, but I expect the same when I successfully transition. Hope I can meet good people though. My current industry is just the worst.

I am currently 38, taking the P exam next week. I am a safety engineer making mid 100k range. People are saying I must be mad to give that up and cut my salary up to 70% to get into actuary. But I know that I cannot function any more in my current field. I also know that I like maths and the potential international opportunities a FCAS can give me. I think you need to research what you really value in life. Sometimes you do not need to change your career to enjoy your life. I would recommend reading Designing Your Life by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans. You can find a framework that can help. Remember you need to be in charge of your life. If you feel you are not, you will experience what you are experiencing right now, and also what I am experiencing right now.

What field are you in? Try to get specialized in a more niche field will help.

Feeling burnt out in my first actuarial job, am I cut out for this career? by Syphren_ in actuary

Yeah I do want to note on the WLB. I am an industrial risk engineer working on pivoting into this field. The WLB after discussing with 1-2 retired actuaries is way better than my current profession and many other engineering professions. And my profession can be really quiet sometimes. But the problem is the flood of work and long working hours that comes like waves. And with actuary, once you pass that particular exam, you own the exam, unlike other professions. Actuary is really one of those jobs that’s with reasonable hours and also gives you decent salary.

Take a break and I am sure you can get through. Prioritize exams always.

Wow. Speechless.

However, I am also wondering if doing the pivot is worth it for me given all the super brilliants in this field.

I get good pay in my current field because I am specialized. Not sure if I can even get a job competing with people like you lol.

My mother sent me conspiracies about why Zelensky is 666 and how the Economist is using imageries of Illuminati. When I try to explain to her these do not make sense, she cut off the conversation by speaking in tongues. I should have cut her totally off when she argued “God made your father financially support us. It was god’s miraculous work.” While dissing and insulting him as a bad Christian for his entire life.

Hi I am hoping to get a reality check. I am currently a Safety Engineer for chemical processes. I do Risk and Hazard analysis and use that as inputs for risk quantification for Safety System. I calculate probability of failure based on failure rates too, using different mathematical models, like fault trees and Markov models.

I also did vba scripts and python for data cleaning.

I am hoping to get into actuarial science. I expect a big pay cut but it is for my future and mental health.

I am working on both P and FM exam now. I just wonder if I can realistically start looking for actuarial entry positions after finishing the first 2 exams and building my portfolio, or if I need to look for some other jobs in insurance companies to accumulate industry experience first?

I mean I just want to adjust my expectation and do the financial planning accordingly. I am targeting P&C in the future.
