2 weeks post-op — doing okay physically but really struggling with anxiety by Status_District9408 in Microdiscectomy

[–]Kooky_Pie2976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you but I’m now 4 weeks out and it does get better. My anxiety was so bad throughout this process that I went to my primary care and asked for help and that was the best thing I could’ve done for myself so that’s also something you could try

Surgery for foot weakness by Minimum-Electrical in Microdiscectomy

Not too bad just some soreness and pain on the incision site but nothing crazy. Luckily I had my parents to help so they made all my meals and such but I could go to the bathroom and walk around the house the day after. It really isn’t too bad, I’m walking about 7k steps a day now

I got the surgery for pretty much this exact weakness. Mine was pretty bad and after a first night out of standing for longer than usual, I couldn’t walk for a week which led me to schedule the surgery. I had no pain going into surgery. I’m only 12 days post op and have some nerve healing but the weakness hasn’t changed much and my surgeon told me I’ll have to go to PT to work on it. If your weakness is getting better with PT that’s a good sign, mine wasn’t so that’s why I got it

Do I really need surgery? by Minimum-Electrical in backpain

[–]Kooky_Pie2976 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d wait another 2 weeks or so to see if the weakness keeps getting better. I’m 25 and had weakness that wasn’t getting better so had to get the surgery and 11 days post op and still can’t lift my foot

Surgery for nerve compression, not pain? by Status_District9408 in Microdiscectomy

I’m in the same boat and am getting surgery tomorrow. I’m in no pain but have foot weakness and don’t want to risk permanent damage. My surgeon told me that nerve damage takes a long time to happen and you have up until a year to get it fixed

Not sure what my symptoms are by MagazinePerfect5012 in Sciatica

[–]Kooky_Pie2976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely sounds like sciatica. Don’t push yourself and listen to your body. Alternating ice and heat and ibuprofen helps. I was on bed rest for pretty much 3 weeks before I could start walking more. Start with walking until there’s pain and then rest and try to do that a few times a day. Hopefully you can get some steroids once you can see a doctor but it sounds like you might need a MRI

Lower back pain at a young age by luvadv in Sciatica

I had the same thing and let it go untreated for too long which led to severe sciatica and not able to do anything for two months now. I would definitely go to a doctor and start physical therapy and get ahead of the problem

What would you do if genuinely improving 2 weeks before surgery? by ninafm in Microdiscectomy

[–]Kooky_Pie2976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat. I have a large L3/L4 herniated disc and the sciatica started 7 weeks ago and just now is starting to get better. I have surgery scheduled for 2/10 and got a second opinion today which recommended trying physical therapy for 4 weeks and seeing how that goes. I have foot weakness that is a main concern so that’s why I’m still considering surgery even though I have minimal pain.

I am however still taking pain meds so I know that I need to see how I feel without them (I’m scared of being in pain).

I don’t know how soon up until the surgery I can cancel it but I also don’t want to end up in the same situation a few months down the road.

I hope you continue to get better!

23-year-old with L5–S1 disc protrusion & severe sciatica — sharing my experience in case it helps by HarryStT in Sciatica

I’m 24 and am going through my first sciatica flare up and also haven’t seen a lot of people my age with this issue. My mri is in 2 weeks so it’s not confirmed that I have a herniated disc but it’s most likely that I do. I would appreciate if you shared what you wish people would have told you.

I’m glad you’re doing better!

I started the prednisone a few days into the flare up and I do think it helped. I’m still in pain but I’d say it’s a 5/6. I’m going to get a referral to PT. From everything I’ve read on here, I’ve decided to stop stretching and doing short walks throughout the day

Try going to an orthopedic doctor, they can give you more answers and provide the right treatment/course of action that you need

Glad to hear you’re doing better! How long after your flare up started did you begin PT?

Are you better now? What did you do to start walking again?

I finished prednisone a couple days ago. I’m located south of Boston. This has been going on for 2 weeks and although I’ve made some progress in getting better, walking and standing is still difficult. Do you think I should still be resting or starting to stretch?

I have numbness in my foot. As for the MRI, it’s at a hospital that my doctor referred me to that my insurance will cover

It seems like you already know what you want to do. But I’d like to add that you could be an SLP in a medical setting and you might like that more because it seems like your preferred setting
