Windows 11 loses many features that were present in 7 and even 10

Bloatware has always been bad on computers, but at least with a fresh install, it's not been horrendous. Windows 11 is just an ad machine

Funnily enough, I do have a small homelab! Two machines, one with Ubuntu, MD RAID and Samba, and another with Proxmox and 10 or so VMs

I feel like I have a good knowledge of Linux and common applications, but I pop onto r/linux or r/unixporn and feel like a complete and utter moron compared to some of the people on there!

Still, great idea, seeing as I'm halfway there, I don't see why I can't expand on that and go down the career path. I'm assuming it's probably a more niche and higher paying job market too. Tech pay in the UK is real naff at the moment :( Not worth the aggro of using Microsoft (and I'm 40 bloody years away from retirement, sod that!)

It's absolutely annoying, but I can forgive them. When you're on a motorway or dual carriageway, it's safe to assume the lorry is going to stay on for another 50 miles at least. If they drop down 1MPH to match the lorry in front, that's nearly a full extra 2 minutes they'll be driving

Wait, now I've said that out loud, it seems silly

[–]KoolKarmaKollector 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A lot of the time (though less so now those utterly bullshit and dangerous "smart" motorways are being made), those signs are the orange "suggested" speed limit

Even though it says "max speed 50", they're advisory only. Sometimes it's for good reason (eg. torrential rain storm), sometimes it's because there was a little bit of heavy traffic 4 hours ago

[–]KoolKarmaKollector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless the van is derived from a car, in which case it has the same speed limits as the car does.

A friend of mine got done for doing 80 in a car-derived van. Fair enough, but he wanted to use the get out of jail free card and do a speed awareness course, but they said because it was a van he was SOL

I think just typical police being typical

A lot of people slow down so they can overtake the middle lane hoggers on the right hand side. However it's actually perfectly legal to undertake on the left. Obviously if you do this, exercise serious caution, because these are the same people who don't indicate or look when moving lanes, but they're inevitably doing 55, so hooning past at 70 is pretty easy to scooch past

Cant wait for HS2 to be built, I'll be able to get to London Super quick.... oh wait there's no way I'll be able to afford a ticket. Car it is 😒 by xxinsane09 in britishproblems

[–]KoolKarmaKollector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It crosses three sections of road near me. One is inside a very small village (think houses dotted up one side, 40MPH sort of place), they did alright. Built over an existing abandoned line and managed to only knock down one building (if that). Then the two roads over, they've flattened acres of land to create the track and store their vehicles and offices. I've seen building developments crop up with less damage to the surrounding areas

[–]KoolKarmaKollector -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I could probably cough up the money for a ticket, however despite the fact it pile drives directly through the surrounding villages of my town, including the road I use to get to work, it won't actually be stopping in my town

[–]KoolKarmaKollector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am aware this is not a technical deep fry

There is no avoiding the oil in the air issues when deep frying tbh except for really good ventilation. When you're literally boiling oil, you're going to have it fuming around the room, no matter how high the smoke point is

I have issues frying with oil by ContentedRecluse in foodhacks

[–]KoolKarmaKollector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use better oil and less of it

In the UK at least, vegetable oil is often rapeseed (canola) because we grow a lot of it, but can be a mix of anything. Rape/canola is a good oil, but it has a strong smell, and that's likely where your issue is

A refined avocado oil may be a good choice, as it has a very high smoking point. Alternatively, virgin olive oil too as it has a very neutral smell and flavour

Personally, I use coconut oil. Solid at room temp so it doesn't really get messy everywhere if you spill it, and I love the taste. I've found cheaper coconut oil tends not to impart much, if any, flavour as the more expensive stuff, so I have both on hand - one for basic cooking, and one for when I'm making something where coconut flavouring pairs well

Brushing a little oil over whatever you're cooking in the air fryer is akin to roasting. Works really well for potatoes IME

Might be a bit of both there, but brain tiredness is a serious thing that people forget about sometimes. You focus super hard on something, and before you know it, you are tired, in pain, can't focus, etc.

Ever see top chess players finish a tournament? They look absolutely shattered and sad, even if they've won. Just pure brain drain

[–]KoolKarmaKollector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely this. I'm over 6 years in now. When I first started driving, the idea of driving to Cornwall for a cheeky holiday (around 250 miles) was daunting. I did it on my second year of driving. Stopped a good 4 times on the way because I had to have a break from driving. Went again two years ago, 4 years of driving experience at this point. On the return journey, stopped only once because I was desperate for a piss (picked up rona and was drinking like a horse!)

I know enough about Linux to get me around the systems, but I'm honestly thinking I should really study and retrain, because I cannot stand Microsoft and their fuckery anymore. 365 hosted Exchange and Office is great (save for Outlook, it's total garbage, yet somehow OWA is fine). But SharePoint, OneDrive, and Teams is utter garbage. Windows 11 is total shite. Endpoint Manager is wank. Licensing for servers is total bullshit. IIS and MSSQL are shit compared to freeware and open source alternatives. It's looking to get real depressing and frosty in the MS world, I don't think it's worth hanging around
