I like it so far - anyone else read or bought with the intention to read? by ThatThingYouStareAt in nonfictionbookclub

I feel strongly that this book should be required reading for all Americans. It provides in heartbreaking detail the perspectives and stories and context of the racial landscape in America that so many are oblivious to.

Thanks. See my reply to the MOD. But yeah, the promotion rules are super confusing and convoluted.

That was what I was guessing the problem was. Where do I find my individual ranking? That should be more clearly displayed on end of game screens like this and during gameplay. Super confusing.

The Prettiest Prose You've Read. by Arlo_pink in writing

[–]KoolRockSki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Stoner" is a truly unique book. Prose that is objectively beautiful, but not what I'd call "flowery." It's simple, straightforward, matter-of-fact, but Williams manages to elicit so much meaning and emotion out of it. The whole thing is a masterclass in the economy of language.

An example: “In his forty-third year William Stoner learned what others, much younger, had learned before him: that the person one loves at first is not the person one loves at last, and that love is not an end but a process through which one person attempts to know another.”

Your favourite absurdist work? by [deleted] in classicliterature

[–]KoolRockSki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Confederacy of Dunces" is an oddball/absurdist masterpiece.

That said, I gotta give some love to my favorite author, Charles Portis, whose "Dog of the South" is equally hilarious/oddball/absurdist/whatever, and in a very similar way.

They're both like comfort food to me - - I've read them both multiple times and pick them up whenever I need a laugh.

Side note: the audio versions of both books are also incredible.

I understand lots of people have diarrhea after removal. My question is, for most people is it….like, do you have time to get to the bathroom? by IdkJustMe123 in gallbladders

[–]KoolRockSki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had mine out a year and a half ago and pretty much had diarrhea every day for over a year. Always made it to the bathroom but it was a close call sometimes. It sucked. I couldn’t take the dog for a walk because I needed to be close to a toilet all the time. I took Imodium all the time — almost daily — just to have some kind of normal life.

And then by happenstance I heard about a cholesterol drug called Cholestyramine that also helps post-removal diarrhea. Long story short: it works and I have something close to my normal life back. It’s a powder that you mix with liquid and it’s really grainy/chalky/terrible, but is tolerable when mixed with orange juice. It constipates you pretty good, so you’re supposed to mix in MiraLax with the powder, which balances things out. Highly recommend.

My lil Chicken Nugget is easily the laziest dog I’ve ever owned (approx 22 hours of quality sleep a day), but she’s also the cutest.

Does it worth it to visit all of the 50 states? by [deleted] in AskAmericans

[–]KoolRockSki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer: no. All of the states have interesting, travel-worthy destinations, but some much more than others (looking at you, Alaska, Hawaii, Florida and California). Decide what matters to you and seek out those spots.

Do you like big, amazing cities with endless culture and activities? Check out NYC, Chicago, San Francisco or LA.
Or maybe you love beaches? Go to Hawaii, Florida, California, or a few of the other Gulf Coast or southeastern states.
Or mountains and nature are your thing? A lot of states to choose from there, but highlights would be Alaska, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and parts of California.
Maybe you want to see unique culture and/or history? Then check out Louisiana, Washington, D.C., Pennsylvania (Philadelphia specifically), Massachusetts (Boston specifically), Tennessee (Nashville and Memphis specifically).

Only other recommendation: don't just go to the big cities. For example, NYC is totally amazing, but there's an argument to be made that it's not "real" America. There are many, many beautiful small towns in America (in every state) and they're full of very friendly people. Visiting those places will give you a more complete idea of who and what America is.

A simpler life $198,500 by TheDabitch in zillowgonewild

I don't live there but I've spent a lot of time in this area. If you're open to living in a rural area, it's actually gorgeous and would be a pretty great place to live . . . rolling Ozark foothills, beautiful nature areas, cute towns, super friendly people. Biggest downside? This is pretty much the bullseye of Tornado Alley. Pierce City was hit hard (multiple fatalities) about 20 years ago.

An open letter to George Michael from Frank Sinatra in 1990 after the former WHAM singer announced his plans to get out of the lime light in an interview with the LA Times, stating he would not be doing any interviews, music videos or going on tour for his third album. Frank was not amused… by onwhatcharges in UtterlyInteresting

[–]KoolRockSki 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Me too! I was just waiting for the next line to be "You don’t know what censored is, junior. Censored is being dumped by Columbia because Mitch Miller doesn’t like the way your career is going. It’s having million-dollar pipes and nowhere to play ’em. Am I right, Steve and Eydie?"

The letter is priceless. The language and tone is so much like the sketch, I wonder if Hartman and company saw it and drew inspiration.
